Security is one of the factors that affect the development of commercial activity , so strategies to combat crime must go beyond containment actions, said María Isabel Herrera Covarrubias, president of the Women Entrepreneurs Commission of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Canaco) Tijuana .

The business leader pointed out that, in a border city like Tijuana, where trade, services and tourism activities converge daily, strengthening security also contributes to generating better conditions for companies .

“Preventive actions are essential to reducing insecurity,” he stated.

He considered that limiting the strategy to checkpoints or reactive actions is insufficient to address a problem that requires a comprehensive vision.

“If we only focus on containing the virus, that’s like just putting on band-aids,” Herrera stressed.

The specialist indicated that intelligence actions, coordination between authorities and efficient law enforcement must be part of the strategy to reduce crime rates and strengthen public trust .

He added that, although some high-impact crimes have shown a decrease, common crimes persist and continue to affect the perception of security.

According to the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) , the daily average of intentional homicides in Mexico fell by 49% between September 2025 and May 2026. However, the organization Causa en Común warned that an average of 14 high-impact events occur daily in the country, increasing the perception of insecurity.

The president of the Women Entrepreneurs Commission pointed out that improving security conditions will strengthen the development of trade and services in the region, one of the main gateways for economic exchange between Mexico and the United States.

In May 2026 alone, Mexican exports to the United States totaled $54,179.6 million , representing a growth of 17.5% compared to the same period in 2025, according to figures from the US Census Bureau .

Meanwhile, total trade between Mexico and its northern neighbor reached $87,230.4 million in the fifth month of the year, a 17.4% increase compared to May 2025, reflecting the dynamic trade between the two countries.
