SAN PEDRO GARZA GARCÍA, NL.- The accuracy in measuring merchandise is beginning to gain relevance in logistics operations , particularly in distribution centers and warehouses where differences in weight and dimensions can translate into additional costs for carriers and cargo owners.
Given this scenario, Grupo Cardinales and FreightSnap are promoting the incorporation of automated technology in Mexico to measure, weigh and document shipments, a solution that seeks to provide greater certainty to operations and improve the management of merchandise from its departure from the warehouse.
At the conference “Dimensioning at the speed of light” , within the framework of the 51st National Index Convention, of the National Council of the Maquiladora and Export Manufacturing Industry (Index Nacional) , Héctor Mora, founder of Grupo Cardinales, and Mike Eichenberg, Co-Founder and Managing Member of FreightSnap, highlighted the importance of cargo owners having their own verifiable information about their goods, instead of depending on third-party records.
The technology allows for obtaining pallet dimensions in approximately two seconds, as well as generating images that document the physical condition of the shipment. When integrated with a scale, it also records the weight of the merchandise and consolidates the information on a digital platform accessible to different departments within the organization.
One of the main benefits is related to billing. Discrepancies between the dimensions declared by the shipper and those recorded by the carrier can lead to tariff adjustments, additional charges, and commercial disputes .
In this sense, having certified measurements allows for supporting the shipping information and providing elements to review possible discrepancies in charges.
Visual documentation is another important element. Images allow you to establish how the merchandise left the warehouse and compare its condition with its condition upon arrival at its destination . This facilitates the identification of any damage during transit and provides evidence for handling claims.
According to Eichenberg, around 10% of shipments may register some type of damage during their journey, which represents costs for participants in the logistics chain .
Mora emphasized the importance of merchandise owners directly contracting monitoring and security services, as this allows for greater visibility over the operation from the moment the cargo leaves the factory until its delivery.
For his part, Eichenberg noted that the solution has a presence in various international markets.
The bet of both companies is that the digitization of measurements and the recording of evidence will become a regular part of the processes in logistics centers, where accurate information can contribute both to cost control and to better shipment management .
