The Mexican commercial sector closed 2025 with negative figures, both in wholesale and retail trade, which registered drops in their income last December, according to the  Monthly Survey on Commercial Companies (EMEC) , carried out by the  National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

In the last month of 2025, real income from the supply of goods and services (the amount obtained from production, marketing or service provision activities) of wholesale trade companies fell 0.8% on a monthly basis .

Conversely,  employment in wholesale trade increased by 0.6%, while average real wages  remained unchanged in their monthly measurement.

On an annual basis, real income from the supply of goods and services fell by 1.7 percent. Total employment grew by 0.2 percent, and average real wages rose by 0.6 percent.

Retail trade also  showed a negative performance in its income, with a monthly decline of 0.1%; meanwhile, the number of employed personnel increased by 0.3%, while average real wages increased by 0.6% on a monthly basis in December 2025.

On an annual basis, retail businesses reported a 4% increase in their income from the supply of goods and services; the number of people employed rose 1.1%, and average real wages grew 4% in the last month of last year.

According to the results from Inegi, four subsectors of wholesale activity  showed decreases in supply income compared to December 2024.

Trucks and new parts and accessories for automobiles, vans, and trucks  contracted the most, at 10.2 percent. Conversely, machinery, equipment, and furniture for agricultural, industrial, service, and commercial activities  was the subsector with the largest increase, rising 8.1 percent annually.

Meanwhile, the subsector with the highest revenue in  retail trade  was household goods, computers, interior decoration items, and used goods , with a 17.8% year-on-year increase. Textiles, costume jewelry, clothing accessories, and footwear  was the only subsector to experience a decline in retail revenue, with a 0.3% year-on-year decrease.

Wholesale and retail trade is a fundamental part of the dynamics of consumption, distribution of goods and economic growth in Mexico, so its measurement is a key factor in understanding other sectors such as employment.
