US President Donald Trump announced that he reached an agreement with his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum , to exempt products included in the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) from 25% tariffs until April 2 .
In a post on his Truth Social account , the US president said that this measure was achieved after holding a phone call with Sheinbaum on Thursday.
During the conversation, both presidents discussed the imposition of tariffs and fentanyl trafficking.
Trump said he made this decision as a sign of respect and cooperation towards the president of Mexico.
He also highlighted the good relations between the two countries and their joint work on border issues, such as the control of irregular migration and the fight against fentanyl trafficking.
“Thank you, President Sheinbaum, for your hard work and cooperation!” Trump concluded his message.
Earlier, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that all goods and services within the USMCA could be excluded from the 25% tariffs for one month.
“It is likely to cover all goods and services that comply with the USMCA, so it is likely that those that are part of President Trump’s agreement with Canada and Mexico will get an exemption from these tariffs,” he said in an interview with CNBC .
Trump’s proposed imposition of 25% tariffs on various Mexican products came into effect on March 4, after having been postponed for a month following an agreement with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to curb illegal migration and fentanyl trafficking to the United States.
In response, Sheinbaum called for an informational meeting for next Sunday, March 9 at 12:00 noon in the Zócalo of Mexico City, in which she will share the actions that her government will undertake.
