President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed on Thursday the pause to exempt the 25% tariffs on products included in the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) until April 2 , for which she thanked her counterpart from the northern neighbor, Donald Trump , who had already announced this measure a few hours earlier.

At Thursday’s morning press conference, which began after 11:00 a.m., Sheinbaum said she had a very respectful call with Trump, and noted that she agrees with the U.S. president that “our work and collaboration has yielded unprecedented results.”

He assured that joint work will continue, specifically on migration and security issues, which include reducing the illegal crossing of fentanyl into the United States, as well as weapons into Mexico.

The president stressed that, as Trump mentioned, Mexico will not be required to pay tariffs on all products within the USMCA. “This agreement is until April 2, when the United States will announce reciprocal tariffs for all countries,” she said.

At the conference, he showed a graph in which he showed that, from October 2024 to February 2025, when tariffs were first postponed, fentanyl seizures decreased by 41.5 percent .

Sheinbaum assured that her trade team will continue working with its counterparts in the United States and the objective is that “if Mexico does not charge tariffs, the United States will not do so either.”

“If tariffs had been collected, I would have had to respond on Sunday,” Sheinbaum said, adding that Mexico must work forward in search of food, energy, and production self-sufficiency for the country’s economic development, within the framework of the Mexico Plan.

He said that economic integration with the United States must be carried out with sovereignty, and he re-emphasized that the four calls he has had with Trump have been “very respectful.”

Regarding the relationship with China, he said that they will review the trade agreements that Mexico has , and said that trade with countries with which there is a trade agreement is prioritized. “We are importing a lot from China,” he said, and pointed out that they want to recover the footwear industry, given the entry of Chinese shoes into Mexico.

The president announced that a festival will be held on Sunday, March 9 in the Zócalo of Mexico City. It should be remembered that an informational meeting was scheduled for that day in which Sheinbaum would share the actions that her government would take regarding Trump’s tariffs.
