Decarbonization in transport is an urgent need for the sector, especially when the average age of the vehicle fleet is 20 years, with more than 75% of the fleet being over 10 years old .
These data become relevant when, according to the report on NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions in diesel engines, 20 tractor-trailer trucks with engines that comply with EPA 98 regulations pollute as much as a tractor-trailer truck with Euro 5 or Euro 6 standards .
Understanding this reality, Trayecto (number 1 of the Top 100 of Autotransport® ) began its initiative in 2015 to incorporate tractor-trailers powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), with the goal of promoting decarbonization in the road transport industry .
“For every gas-powered truck we put into operation and remove one diesel-powered truck, we stop consuming five thousand liters of diesel per month,” explained Jorge Casares López, president and CEO of Trayecto, describing that the company currently has just over 700 CNG-powered trucks.
The above is an example of the 360 vision to which Jorge Casares refers, where all of Trayecto’s actions are aligned with a defined objective, ” by 2035 we intend to have between eight thousand and eight thousand five hundred tractor trucks, of which 60% will not use diesel , when we started with this strategy in 2015 we did not even have 1% with that condition,” the executive highlighted.
To achieve this goal, Trayecto is making solid progress. In 2025, 12% of the fleet did not use diesel as its primary energy source ; by 2026, according to Jorge Casares, this figure will reach 15%. “We have nine years to increase that percentage from 15% to 60%, but with a fleet 70% larger, that’s the challenge. We’ll have five thousand tractor-trailers that don’t use diesel,” he stated.

In addition to the 700 CNG tractor-trailers, the company currently has 20 electric tractor-trailers; by 2035, these energy sources together will represent five thousand units within Trayecto’s fleet .
One element that adds to this equation is the energy consumption of Trayecto, where a drop in diesel consumption was recorded in 2025, while in the tractor-trailer fleet it increased, but the difference is reflected in the consumption of compressed natural gas which between 2021 and 2025 averaged an annual growth of 93 percent .
Jorge Casares is emphatic about Trayecto’s vision of being part of the solution to the challenge of climate change. In this way, in addition to investments in vehicles, the firm has channeled resources to have more than six thousand solar panels and 10 water treatment plants, to achieve environmental impacts in various areas.
One point that stands out about this strategy, as Jorge Casares shared, is that it reaches its various stakeholder groups and generates commitment to align with its objectives.
