A group of people in the community of Puente Colorada, located in Chapulco, Puebla, have blocked the train line that connects Veracruz with Mexico City since September 24 , according to a press release from the Mexican Railway Association (AMF) .
This blockade, which also includes the temporary detention of railway company personnel , is part of a context of demands for water supply in the region.
In this sense, the blockade affects the local community and also has significant repercussions on various economic sectors .
The disruption of rail traffic thus has a direct impact on the supply of key industries , such as the energy and steel industries , which could lead to shortages of fuel oil and raw materials needed for production. In a context in which the Salamanca and Tula refineries are already facing challenges, the situation is becoming critical, the statement said.
In addition, the agricultural sector is under increasing pressure, as the blockade is estimated to prevent the daily transport of approximately 20,000 tons of grain to the centre of the country .
The AFM also explained in the statement that the problem is further complicated during this peak season for inventories , when containerized cargo traffic to the port of Veracruz is essential for the national economy. The lack of rapid action by the authorities could lead to even more serious consequences for the central and south-southeast regions of the country.
Given this situation, the AMF has urgently called on the competent authorities to intervene and clear the railway line as soon as possible, thus avoiding further damage to the communities and the economy in general.
