Cross Dock, the first Mexican company named by Union Pacific (UP) as an Intermodal Marketing Company (IMC), is working on “getting” more customers on the intermodal route . In 2024 alone, it managed to get a supplier of a major American manufacturer of cars, trucks and engines to move 1,500 containers carrying steel through this transport scheme.
Rafael Saldaña Paz, CEO of the company, explains that with this new figure they will not be the typical IMC, but rather they will analyze case by case to offer the service, as well as apply the “search, educate and transform” approach, since intermodal transport is a great service that can be provided in North America – today only 2% of penetration is in this modality against the truck – so there is too much growth in this segment.
“We obtained the license, or let’s call it a franchise, to be a cross-border intermodal company, and we are very happy to be part of Ferromex and UP,” he said.
He mentions that now, being IMC cross border , they can move from Mexico, the United States and Canada and vice versa , this due to an alliance with UP, while at the domestic level it is with Ferromex and the American Norfolk Southern.
“The issue is knowing the transport, the service, the advantages and how to achieve it, creating new clients who have never been on intermodal and with a commodity that was not even registered in intermodal. We are attacking niches that others do not have and we are trying to differentiate ourselves from the normal IMC, supported by an Artificial Intelligence department and a cloud tracking service and highly automated processes,” he says.
