Conekta Intermodal and the awakening of Topolobampo

The conditions for new investment in the Sinaloa port have been met, which would lead it to become a commercial maritime hub.

The stars have aligned in Topolobampo. This cosmic formation has been strategically executed by Conekta Intermodal , which for several years has been determined to turn this Sinaloa port into one of the main maritime and intermodal connection centers between Mexico and the United States.

Economic and operational conditions, along with business opportunities, are at a premium. José Luis Castro, general manager of Conekta Intermodal, explains to T21 that the company plans to open up a significant trade gap primarily through container exchanges , an activity that has been nonexistent at the port of Topolobampo until now, under two specific models.

The first of these is “homemade.” Conekta Intermodal is part of the latest investments made by Guadalupe Miranda Baldenebro, the so-called “Bean King,” in Mexico. The Sinaloan-born entrepreneur is a business success story in his own right. His companies serve the “nostalgia market” in the United States.

For just over two decades, it has supplied the Hispanic market in the United States with grains such as beans and chickpeas, not only from Mexico but also from Peru and Nicaragua, with which it sells at least 30,000 tons annually. A considerable demand.

Castro commented in an interview that a large portion of the 50,000 containers currently entering through the Port of Long Beach, California, will be moved to Topolobampo, primarily to be shipped to Phoenix, Arizona, the company’s hub for distribution throughout the United States, with competitive shipping times, whether by rail or road.

What was once a plan on a piece of paper is now a reality. Conekta Intermodal has taken its first steps. One of these steps was to secure a concession at the port of Topolobampo, authorizing it to handle cargo maneuvers . These cargoes, in turn, can take advantage of the Mazatlán-Nogales fiscal corridor for international transit to the United States. In fact, on June 1, it received the first vessel from Germany carrying machinery and equipment for an ammonia plant currently under construction in Topolobampo.
