Grupo Aeroméxico has formed a strategic alliance with Grupo Bimbo through which it will promote the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in its corporate and business travel in Latin America.

With this alliance, the first of its kind in the region, both companies combine capabilities, vision and commitment to accelerate the reduction of emissions through the use of SAF , joining efforts to move towards more sustainable aviation.

The reduction of emissions will be certified through internationally recognized mechanisms for the allocation and traceability of the SAF.

“This alliance reflects how collaboration can accelerate the transition to more sustainable aviation in Mexico and Latin America, driving concrete actions to reduce emissions in key activities such as business travel. The transition will only be possible through a network of partners committed to significantly reducing the environmental impact of their entire value chain and moving toward long-term goals for 2050. This agreement sets a precedent in the region and demonstrates that it is possible to move toward concrete, measurable solutions aligned with global climate challenges,” said Karen Farías, Director of Sustainability & ESG at Aeroméxico.

In this way, both companies will contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse gases; in the case of the airline, by reducing Scope 1 emissions generated by fuel use; while Grupo Bimbo will reduce its Scope 3 emissions, generated by business travel. This joint effort reinforces the long-term decarbonization goals of both organizations and consolidates their leadership in corporate sustainability.

“We have a clear goal for 2050: for Grupo Bimbo to be a net-zero carbon emissions company. To achieve this, initiatives like the one we have today with Aeroméxico contribute to this goal, which requires the joint work of all stakeholders throughout our value chain,” said Alejandra Vázquez, Global Director of Sustainability at Grupo Bimbo.

Furthermore, David Hernández, Global Purchasing Director at Grupo Bimbo, stated that “this alliance with Aeroméxico demonstrates how collaboration with strategic partners can help us reduce emissions beyond our direct operations and tangibly advance towards our goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.”

This collaboration represents a milestone for the airline industry in Mexico and Latin America , reflecting the commitment and vision of both organizations in integrating sustainability into their business models and corporate strategies; as well as in adopting tangible solutions to move towards a low-carbon economy.

Regarding Aeromexico, this initiative will allow it to continue moving towards its goal of net zero emissions by 2050, strengthening its leadership as one of the main drivers of the viability of sustainable aviation fuels in the region.

Currently, SAF is considered the leading solution available for reducing air transport emissions , as it allows for up to an 80% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional fossil fuels. It is produced from renewable raw materials such as organic waste and has the necessary certifications for its use, making it compatible with the current airline fleet.

Therefore, the initiative seeks to strengthen a culture of sustainability both within organizations and in society, promoting greater awareness of the importance of decarbonization. It is also part of Grupo Bimbo’s comprehensive decarbonization strategy, which addresses various aspects of the value chain, from agriculture to logistics and energy.

The water crisis, the energy transition, and electromobility cannot be analyzed separately. This was the argument put forward by Yolanda Villegas, CEO of Oleum and president of the Mexican Association of Storage, Electrification, and Mobility (AMAEM) , during the webinar “Water, Energy Transition, and Electromobility ,” organized by the Secretariat of Economic Development of Tamaulipas.

In her presentation, the specialist warned that water has become one of the main global risks to human survival and argued that Mexico faces increasing pressure stemming from climate change, industrial expansion, and the rise in energy demand.

“Instead of calling ourselves planet Earth, we should call ourselves planet water,” he said.

Villegas González emphasized that the water problem is not only due to the physical scarcity caused by reduced rainfall, but also to an “economic scarcity” related to the lack of infrastructure to bring water to different communities.

In this context, he explained that Mexico faces an unequal distribution of the resource: while the north and center of the country concentrate the greatest industrial and economic activity, much of the available water is located in the south.

He pointed out that the country requires comprehensive water management that considers not only the extraction of the resource, but also its environmental, social and economic impacts.

He also raised the need to explore new technologies for water supply, such as the so-called “ultra-deep underground mega-basins” , a model that seeks to take advantage of water reserves located between three thousand and five thousand meters deep.

According to the speaker, these types of solutions could represent less invasive alternatives than large dams or desalination plants, as they require less infrastructure, less development time, and less environmental impact.

The energy transition is no longer optional.

Villegas warned that the increase in global energy demand continues to drive the use of fossil fuels and, with it, the increase in polluting emissions and global temperature.

He explained that the energy sector currently generates more than 73% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions , so he considered it urgent to accelerate the shift towards clean energy.

During the webinar , he defined the energy transition as the gradual process by which economies migrate from a matrix based on fossil fuels to one based on renewable energies, electrification and clean technologies.

Among the pillars of this transition he mentioned decarbonization, energy decentralization, digitalization and democratization of access to energy.

The specialist highlighted that Mexico has strategic advantages for this transformation thanks to its solar, wind and hydroelectric potential, particularly in states like Tamaulipas .

However, he also defended the use of fossil fuels and nuclear energy as part of an orderly transition strategy.

“There are countries that continue to use oil, coal, and gas while urging emerging economies to stop. Mexico must take advantage of its energy resources while developing new technologies,” he argued.

Electromobility

Another key topic was electromobility, which, according to Villegas González, will transform the transport industry in the coming decades.

He noted that by 2030, up to 50% of the world’s vehicles could be fully or partially electric , while by 2040 more than 500 million electric vehicles would be on the road globally.

In the case of Mexico, he highlighted the growth of the electric automotive industry and the country’s potential as a producer of auto parts.

“Electromobility doesn’t just mean buying electric vehicles; it requires charging infrastructure, regulation, tax incentives, training, and smarter electrical grids,” he explained.

He also highlighted the progress of cities like Mexico City in incorporating electric buses into public transport, although he acknowledged that there are still significant regulatory and infrastructure challenges.

Among them, he mentioned the lack of public charging stations , the absence of regulation for the final disposal of batteries, the need for safety protocols for fires in electric vehicles, insufficient tax incentives and poor legislative coordination.

The expert insisted that the energy transition will depend largely on political will and the ability of governments to promote clear public policies.

“Public policy is fundamental. Without it there will be no regulation, incentives, or implementation,” he stated.

He also stressed that the State must maintain a leading role in energy, environmental and water issues to guarantee energy security, food security and access to water.

Villegas González argued that sustainable mobility begins with a cultural shift and a change in transportation habits, prioritizing efficient public systems, sustainable infrastructure, and less polluting technologies.

“The goal is not only to electrify vehicles, but to build more efficient, resilient and sustainable cities ,” he stressed.

Continental announced the complete elimination of coal and fuel oil as energy sources in tire production. Since January of this year, all of the company’s plants have switched to alternative energy sources such as biomass, biogas, electricity from renewable energy sources, and fuels like liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas, with the goal of ensuring a constant energy supply .

“By opting for a smart mix of energy sources, increasingly renewable and, where possible, generated directly on site, we are making our manufacturing more independent and, therefore, more resilient,” said Bernhard Trilken, Director of Manufacturing and Logistics at Continental Tires.

For his part, Henning Mühlenstedt, Director of Future Technologies and Sustainable Infrastructure at Continental Tires, highlighted that the reduction in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions is the result of continuous investments in electrification and alternative sources .

Until the early 2020s, seven of the company’s 19 plants relied on coal and fuel oil to generate steam. Currently, all operate with a diversified mix of alternative sources , the result of systematic investment.

According to the tire manufacturer, the greenhouse gas intensity of its production has been reduced by more than 70% compared to 2019, avoiding nearly 180,000 metric tons of CO₂ in the last four years .

The energy transition is reflected in various of the company’s plants . In Gqeberha, South Africa, coal was replaced by biomass and LPG; in Kalutara, Sri Lanka, the installation of a second biomass boiler eliminated fuel oil. In Otrokovice, Czech Republic, collaboration with the regional energy provider led to a shift towards biomass and natural gas.

Currently, all of Continental’s tire plants have a diversified mix of alternative energy sources, due to systematic and long-term investments.

Last year, Continental’s efforts to reduce its emissions were recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) , which awarded it an A- rating for climate transparency and emissions reduction measures .

According to the document, the foundation’s work impacted 565,697 people in 2025, representing an increase of more than 50% compared to 2024 .

“This was achieved thanks to the processes and institutionalization that we as a foundation have built, but also to the support of allies, other companies and public institutions that have believed in Fundación TRAXION and have helped us to generate a tangible impact,” Méndez highlighted.

Since its creation in 2020, the foundation has benefited more than 2.2 million Mexicans. Its strategy is structured around three pillars that enable it to transform realities in vulnerable communities .

Throughout 2025, 3,839 employees participated in community and environmental actions , consolidating the human commitment behind each project.

Sandra Leyva Martinez from Brambles/CHEP summed it up with compelling logic: “We don’t sell these assets: we rent them,” and, after the customer’s use, “we recover them, inspect them, repair them and then put them back into circulation.”

In their approach, the circular economy scales when there is real orchestration between suppliers, operations and customers, and when environmental metrics are integrated into indicators that already govern the chain: productivity, efficiency, losses and total cost.

“The key is integration, maintaining sustainability metrics integrated with what operations or procurement see,” he emphasized, and operating beyond the four walls, because circularity isn’t implemented in isolation. Following this logic, the conversation shifts from “end of life” to the entire operation: how the circuit is designed, how it’s monitored, and how it becomes replicable. At this scale, the model is best understood through numbers: Brambles operates in more than 60 countries and manages 347 million pallets, crates, and containers.

In the case of Mexico, Leyva connected the conversation to the regulatory front: he pointed out that “particularly in Mexico, the circular economy law is being developed” and that “the initiative was already approved in December 2025.” Under this interpretation, the next stage is not only conceptual, but also about installed capacity: building infrastructure and coordination among stakeholders so that materials and assets that can be reintegrated into the production system do not remain at a basic level of collection and disposal, but rather enable replicable value recovery circuits.

In Mexico, 102,895 tons of waste are generated daily , and only 9.63% of that waste is recycled, according to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) .

From Logitech , Sacni Leon brought the circular economy to the forefront: inventory control, warranty operations, and reverse logistics. His approach is pragmatic: “don’t be afraid to start something” because models change quickly; that’s why his recommendation is to start with pilot projects: “you have to start with something… it might be something small.”

He also added a commercial nuance that helps to understand why adoption is not homogeneous: “In Mexico and Latin America, product repair is very common… something that is not the case here in the United States.”

This contrast opens up opportunities for circular models that coexist with the primary market and enable alternative value routes, especially when there are mechanisms to recover product even at the end of its useful life and ensure its proper recycling.

In particular, Leon emphasized the shift in roles as these programs mature: in refurbishment and recommerce schemes, “you are no longer considered a cost center… you recover money and can generate a completely different business model.” In terms of supply chain , the implication is clear: circularity is not an isolated project, but a reconfiguration of capabilities, suppliers, inventories, and channels.

Reverse logistics as a product

For leaders in transportation and logistics, the key takeaway is that the circular economy is beginning to translate into marketable capacity: reverse network design, consolidation, triage , traceability, value-added partners, and visibility. Returns aren’t the central focus of the conversation, but they do serve as a signal of both pressure and opportunity: in the United States, retail returns are projected to reach $890 billion in 2024, and retailers estimate that 16.9% of sales will be returned.

This magnitude necessitates the professionalization of reverse logistics and the monetization of recoverable value instead of absorbing it as a loss. Optoro estimates that the cost of a return averages 27% of the purchase price and can wipe out up to 50% of the profit margin.

KPIs for profitable circularity

The common ground between both approaches lies in the method: profitable circularity requires reverse logistics with design and governance. The “minimum viable” for capturing value per cycle typically includes:

Recovery and consolidation (network, return points).

Triage (rapid classification by value, condition and compliance).

Revaluation (reconditioning, parts/components or certified disposal).

Traceability + Integrated KPIs (cycle time, recoverable %, cost per unit, waste).

During the circularity panel, Jo Marini, CEO and founder of Mothership Materials, and Stacy Flinn, CEO of EVRNU, also spoke, with Talia Rafaeli, Partner at KOMPAS VC, moderating. The discussion yielded a practical conclusion: the next competitive leap in supply chain will not only be about moving forward faster, but about closing the loop with operational discipline. The question for 2026: who designs the reverse network as a competitive advantage, and who continues to treat it as an exception?

CANCUN, Q. ROO.- Miguel Robles Pérez , director of the Institute of Renewable Energies (IER) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) , presented the Mexico energy and storage transition outlook , an analysis that reveals the urgency of accelerating the energy transition in Mexico in the face of the irreversible effects of climate change.

During his speech at Huawei ‘s Latin America C&I Greenovation Summit 2025 , he stressed that science, technology, and collaboration between academia, industry, and government will be key to building a more resilient, intelligent energy system prepared for electrification, storage, and the incorporation of new technologies such as smart grids, electric vehicles, and green hydrogen.

The specialist stressed that climate change is already showing irreversible effects and that the energy transition has ceased to be an option and has become a condition for mitigation and survival .

Robles recalled that the scientific evidence is conclusive: carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have grown rapidly in the last 50 to 100 years and their consequences are already being seen in extreme weather events, disappearances and human losses.

“We may or may not believe in climate change, but reality forces us to act,” he stated.

The academic presented an analysis from IER-UNAM showing that, although 166 countries have adopted measures towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , no region of the world will be able to meet them by 2030 if current trends continue.

“This should lead us to reflect on the urgency of accelerating the transition processes,” he said.

Robles explained that Mexico is experiencing two parallel energy dynamics: large power plants (thermal, hydroelectric, solar, wind, nuclear) that feed the national grid and distributed generation , which is growing steadily and functions as a support to the system.

In his presentation, he showed data that demonstrates an accelerated growth of small generators, even without a policy that actively promotes it.

“Regardless of what we want, the phenomenon occurs. And that is positive because it strengthens the system,” he noted.

Although they do not yet represent a risk of destabilization, Robles warned that there are at least 100 nodes where problems could arise if action is not taken in advance.

One of the disruptive elements transforming the sector is batteries , both stationary and mobile. Robles emphasized that their advancement completely changes the dynamics of the electrical system, enabling storage, flexibility, and greater resilience.

Electric vehicles reflect this trend, as their registration in Mexico is growing even faster than distributed generation, and their presence is widely diversified across the country. “They are true game changers , ” the researcher stated.

The energy landscape of the future already includes new technological layers ranging from telecommunications and data to artificial intelligence.
