Households’ perceptions of the economy showed signs of caution. The Consumer Confidence Indicator (CCI), based on the results of the National Consumer Confidence Survey (ENCO), stood at 45 points in October 2016 , representing a monthly decrease of 0.1 points and a year-on-year decline of 0.6 points.
According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) and the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) , the decline was not concentrated in a single variable, since three of the five components that make up the indicator registered decreases at a monthly rate, as well as in their annual measurement.
With seasonally adjusted figures, the country’s current economic situation compared to 12 months ago and the expected economic situation in 12 months compared to the current situation both fell by 0.5 units, compared to September 2026.
The component that showed the greatest progress was the current ability of household members, compared to a year ago, to purchase furniture, televisions, washing machines, and other household appliances, with an increase of 0.3 points on a monthly basis.
On an annual basis, the largest drop was seen in the expected economic situation of the country in 12 months compared to the current situation, with a decrease of 2.1 points. Meanwhile, the current ability of household members to purchase furniture and other appliances, compared to a year ago, registered an increase of 1.2 points.

The drop in consumer confidence in October suggests that the challenge for the final stretch of the year will not only be to maintain consumption, but to regain enough confidence for households to turn their income and expectations into purchasing decisions.
The evolution of the indicator will depend on greater consumer confidence and a broader recovery in household purchasing power.
