Hutchison Ports TNG celebrates 30 years of operations in Mexico this March 13 , in an environment of growth and innovation.

Its history began in 1995 , following the seizure of the port of Veracruz. This marked the beginning of a new era for the shipyard, built in 1929.

At that time it evolved from a parastatal operation into a private company under the name “Talleres Navales del Golfo (TNG) .

Since then, it has expanded its capabilities in the construction, renovation and repair of naval artifacts , as well as in the manufacture of structures for urban infrastructure and for the offshore and inshore energy industry .

Another pivotal moment came in 2006, with the company’s integration into the Hutchison Ports Group , a move that marked a new chapter in its history, opening up opportunities in the global market and expanding its reach and operational capacity.

Shared achievements

Since its first projects in the 1990s, TNG has led not only the naval industry but also the metalworking industry , manufacturing and building offshore modules, jackets, wind towers, bridges, decks, chimneys, steel tanks, among others, used in strategic projects.

One of the key moments in the history of shipbuilding came in 2014, with the revival of shipbuilding in Mexico.

In collaboration with the Navy and Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) , TNG carried out the manufacture of four azimuth tugboats, as well as the shot peening, priming, cutting and beveling of more than 3,500 steel plates (with an approximate weight of 5,500 tons), used for the construction of 16 tugboats , returning to the country its participation in the construction of specialized vessels.

Additionally, between 2017 and 2021, it participated in the supply, manufacturing, assembly, and erection of steel spans for the construction of the “Siervo de la Nación” elevated highway in the State of Mexico, a project that required the talent and skill of more than 300 workers and the use of a total of 4,200 tons of steel.

“More than a technical challenge, this project demonstrated the talent and versatility of our team,” according to a TNG document detailing this profile.

Innovation and sustainability

Its responsibility towards the environment has been demonstrated through various projects, such as the renewal of steel and pipes, and the implementation of environmental technologies such as ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) and atmospheric emission scrubbers (Scrubbers), in compliance with the regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) .

“Our commitment to quality has led us to obtain ISO 9001 certification, ensuring that our processes meet the highest international standards and reinforcing our customers’ confidence in our operational capabilities,” according to the document.

Through initiatives like TNG Sano , they promote the well-being of their employees with health, leadership, and safety programs. Likewise, their environmental responsibility is strengthened through actions such as beach cleanups, reforestation, waste management, the creation of a waste disposal squad, and ongoing environmental training for all our employees and suppliers.

Thanks to these initiatives, they have achieved environmental certifications such as ISO 14001 and the “Green Certificate” granted by the State Attorney General’s Office for Environmental Protection (PMA) .

The future

In May 2024, TNG renewed its partial rights transfer contract with the National Port System Administration (Asipona) Veracruz , ensuring its presence in the naval industry for another 30 years.

“Beyond infrastructure and technology, we know that the true driving force behind our growth has been our people. Generations of collaborators who have passed on their knowledge and passion, creating a culture of excellence that distinguishes us, where success is measured not only by completed projects, but also by the positive impact we generate in our community,” reads the company’s commemorative document.
