In November 2024, the physical volume of manufacturing industry production registered an increase of 1.1% compared to the previous month and 2% at an annual rate, according to the results of the Monthly Survey of the Manufacturing Industry (EMIM) , published this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .
The survey also revealed that employed personnel decreased by 0.3% in the eleventh month of 2024, and that by type of contract, the personnel dependent on the company fell by 0.3% , while the non-dependent personnel – those hired and provided by another company, and it is done for fees or commissions, so they do not have a fixed salary – increased by 0.4 percent .
Hours worked showed a monthly increase of 0.4% , while average real wages paid (salaries, wages and social benefits) in the manufacturing sector also registered an increase of 0.5% compared to the previous month.
In the penultimate month of the year, the hours worked by employees of the company increased by 0.4% and those of non-employee employees increased by 0.9 percent .
Regarding the variation in the indicators of the manufacturing sector and by subsector, the manufacturing of clothing was one of the industries that had one of the largest falls in the physical volume of production with an annual variation of 11.4% , and also registered a decrease in the number of employed personnel of 7.5 percent .
Along these lines, the Mexican textile industry has been one of the most affected by unfair practices by some foreign companies that offer undervalued products through temporary imports, which is why on December 19, President Claudia Sheinbaum signed a decree to increase tariffs on manufactured goods by 35% , in order to protect this sector.
According to the results of the EMIM, production , hours worked and wages increased during November , while the number of employed personnel decreased both monthly and annually, which anticipates a panorama of what could come this year in this indicator, which has to do with the labor issue, and which will be one of the points that will be put on the table in the next review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) in 2026.
According to Inegi, the EMIM reveals the behavior of the main variables associated with employment in the manufacturing sector, and captures quantitative information on employed personnel dependent on the company name, employed personnel not dependent on the company name, salaries, among other indicators.
