Last April, the theft of merchandise on the railway suffered an increase of 160% compared to the same month last year , with corn, wheat, accessories, controls and tires being the items that were stolen the most.
The Rail Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) reported that the increase in this type of incidents was derived from the 446 reports that were registered in that month, against the 171 in the same period but in 2023.
According to the document Pulse of the Mexican Railway System – Security, April 2024, of the total theft events, 57 resulted in complaints filed with the competent authority.
The merchandise subgroups with the highest number of incident reports were grains, seeds and their derivatives, as well as other industrial products with 20.8% each, followed by auto parts with 14.4 percent. These three subgroups together represent 56.2% of the total reports.
It is worth mentioning that the products with the highest incidence of theft were corn and wheat , followed by unspecified accessories and controls and tires .
