With the aim of promoting mobility based on sustainability that prioritizes passenger transportation and benefits cargo transportation, the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC) defined an agenda that seeks, among other things, to allocate sufficient resources to trigger the change.
Luis Méndez, president of the CMIC, explained that the proposed route map will be shared with the corresponding authorities, so that progress is made on priority issues for the country, and what will be the urban mobility infrastructure is built today. of the future, which of course includes the incorporation of electric vehicles into the equation.
The chamber’s proposal is based on the creation of the National Institute of Sustainable Urban Mobility that promotes the strengthening of urban planning and territorial ordering, aimed at containing horizontal expansion and promoting population densification.
Likewise, the organization proposed reactivating the Metropolitan Fund in the federal budget , which would increase investment for the development, expansion and modernization of public transportation systems for people. “It is important that this project be reinstated,” said Méndez.
Among other topics, the expansion and improvement of infrastructure for pedestrian and cyclist traffic was discussed. As well as the acceleration of the transition towards electromobility through the expansion of infrastructure for recharging vehicles, as well as the definition of the relevant regulations and tax incentives.
“Another important point is to assess the convenience of implementing charging systems for the use of high congestion areas to discourage the use of private vehicles in critical areas and peak hours, and also use these income to finance specific improvements in comprehensive transportation and in issues of transportation,” defined the president of the CMIC.
The CMIC defined that it is crucial to strengthen the comprehensive vision of risks in infrastructure and mobility systems in the face of phenomena related to climate change.
It should be noted that education and awareness of the population on sustainable transportation issues occupy an important place on the agenda. At the same time, it seeks to intensify the use of advanced digital technologies to improve traffic management.
“We propose the promotion of alternative financing schemes for infrastructure for sustainable urban mobility . For example, public-private co-investment models, the potential enhancement of federal resource flows received by states and municipalities. Contracts for the provision of services, concessions and Real Estate Investment Trusts (fibers),” commented the representative of the CMIC.
Finally, emphasis was placed on the use of legal, institutional and public policy instruments to move towards a sustainable mobility model, “where pedestrians and cyclists head the mobility pyramid, followed by public transport and cargo, to leave in the end the private vehicle,” Méndez added.
