The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) published the Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Light Vehicles (RAIAVL), revealing a significant increase in the production and export of new cars. In May 2024, 365,574 light vehicles were produced, representing a 4.93% increase compared to the same month the previous year.
Production of light vehicles:
Likewise, in the fifth month of the year, the automotive industry exported 310,655 light vehicles, marking a positive variation of 12.98% compared to the same period in 2023.
Export of light vehicles:
Regarding the annual figures, the first five months of the year showed robust performance with the production of 1,651,930 light vehicles, representing a 5.03% variation compared to the same period last year. The light truck segment accounted for a higher percentage of production at 75.2%, broken down into SUVs, pickups, and minivans.
So far this year, 1,426,110 units have been exported, marking a positive variation of 12.3% compared to the same period in 2023.
Odracir Barquera, director of the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA), explained that the United States is the main destination for export and import.
“17% of vehicles exported to the United States are Mexican. We are the country that provides the most vehicles to our northern neighbor,” Barquera noted.
On the other hand, regarding auto parts, from January to March 2024, there was an 8% increase compared to the same quarter in 2023. Armando Cortés, CEO of the National Autoparts Industry (INA), commented that these figures are historically high.
“These figures reflect the dynamism of the autoparts industry. The northern region of the country accounts for the highest production with 43.5%, while the Bajío region represents the second place with 36%, and the central region comes in third with 15.5%,” Armando Cortés added.
