Volkswagen de México announced that it will produce the Golf model starting in 2027 at its Puebla plant , marking the return of this vehicle to the factory and integrating it into the transition process of this manufacturing center towards new production capabilities.
“Preparing our Puebla plant for a successful launch of the Golf is a privilege for everyone on this great team at Volkswagen de México. We once again have a brand icon on our production lines, and we will make its return a great success story. Operational excellence has been and will continue to be the common denominator leading up to this launch,” said Holger Nestler, President and CEO of Volkswagen de México.
The plant, with nearly 60 years of experience and over 14.5 million units manufactured , has invested in infrastructure and modernization. In 2025, the Volkswagen Group’s first fully electric paint shop was inaugurated . Ongoing upgrades will allow the automaker’s portfolio in Mexico to encompass the SUV, sedan, and hatchback segments.
The plant upgrade process also generates an economic impact in the region through investments in equipment, supplier specialization, and strengthening of the automotive cluster. It also fosters knowledge transfer and new opportunities for companies across the value chain .
The production of the Golf also presents an opportunity to promote national talent. The process involves advanced technical training for personnel, skills updates, and development of abilities in digitalization and process management. This strengthens the participation of Mexican talent in global Volkswagen Group projects.
The transformation of the productive infrastructure reflects a strategy that combines innovation, competitiveness and regional development.
Volkswagen’s Puebla plant has been key to Golf production. Since its arrival in 1970, this model has been manufactured in Mexico through four generations, accumulating more than two million units produced. Currently, the plant also produces the Jetta, Taos, and Tiguan.
