Mexico, the United States, and Canada held the fourth meeting of the USMCA Environment Committee , a meeting planned under Chapter 24 of the trade agreement , with the aim of evaluating progress, sharing best practices, and strengthening regional cooperation on environmental matters.
According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Economy (SE) , during the meeting, the delegations presented progress in the application of their environmental laws and in initiatives aimed at protecting ecosystems, sustainably managing forests and protected natural areas, as well as combating environmental crimes and reducing marine litter.
The three countries agreed that technical coordination and information exchange are key to addressing common challenges and maximizing the benefits of the treaty.
The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) presented its priority projects, as well as the files from the Citizens’ Petitions on Environmental Law Enforcement (SEM Petitions) mechanism. This exchange allowed for the identification of new areas of joint work and opportunities to improve the implementation of Chapter 24.
Furthermore, as part of the USMCA mandate, a virtual public session was held where governments shared the main results of the meeting and the findings of the five-year review of the Environment Chapter, which concluded in June 2025. Representatives from academia, civil society organizations, business chambers, and other stakeholders joined this forum, submitting questions about the status and implementation of the environmental chapter.
The SE reported that at the close, the three countries emphasized that the progress achieved strengthens the implementation of the USMCA and creates favorable conditions for the comprehensive review of the agreement, scheduled for 2026.
Mexico reiterated its commitment to continue working with the United States and Canada to consolidate a regional environmental agenda based on sustainable development, shared prosperity, and transparency.
