US trade with North American partners continues unabated due to tariffs

Trucking traffic increased by 3.8%, pipeline traffic by 23%, while rail and maritime traffic contracted.

Despite the uncertainty caused by U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies and his tariff and foreign trade announcements , the flow of cargo between the United States, Mexico, and Canada showed signs of strength in February 2025.

Along these lines, cross-border trade between the United States and its North American partners reached $131.6 billion in February 2025, representing a 2.1% increase over the same month last year, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

The report shows that trucking and pipeline transportation registered the largest year-over-year increases among the different modes.

Shipments to and from Mexico totaled $68.4 billion in the analysis cycle, a 2.0% year-over-year increase, while trade with Canada totaled $63.2 billion , growing 2.2%. Overall, the southern border maintained a slight advantage in terms of trade volume.

Trucking has reaffirmed its position as the primary mode of transportation in U.S. trade with Mexico and Canada, moving $86.6 billionin merchandise , representing annual growth of 3.9%. Meanwhile, rail transportation experienced a contraction of 11.7% , reaching $15.1 billion.

Among other modes, the rebound in pipeline transport stood out , with a rise of 23.1% to reach 10 billion dollars, while maritime transport fell 22.9% and air transport increased 4.8% , moving 7.7 and 4.8 billion dollars, respectively.

Mexico concentrates the largest volume by truck transport

BTS revealed in its figures that the border with Mexico accounted for $51.4 billion in trucking traffic, compared to $35.2 billion on the border with Canada.

Laredo topped the list of major land ports, with $23.4 billion in traffic.

Regarding rail transport , the main flows between the US and Mexico were channeled through Laredo.

Additionally, among the products that crossed borders by road, computers and electronic parts stand out ($13.8 billion at the border with Mexico), followed by electrical equipment ($10.6 billion) and vehicles and spare parts ($6.9 billion).
