SuKarne , a Mexican company dedicated to the production and marketing of animal protein, has joined the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) of Mexico and its refrigerated service to the United States, as well as a company that makes cookies , and is also seeking to move avocados by this transport from Michoacán.
This was announced by Oscar Del Cueto, president of the railroad, who mentioned that the above will be carried out through its partnership with Americold , one of the leading temperature-controlled logistics companies in the United States, and with whom they will inaugurate the specialized terminal in Kansas City next week.
“In Monterrey, an agreement was signed with one of the largest producers, SuKarne. They’re going to bring this product from the United States, and we’re going to handle vegetables and berries northward. We did some tests with a cookie factory in Monterrey, and they turned out well,” he explained.
During a meeting held on August 1 with the industry, he explained that Americold’s plans include building a terminal in Mexico with the same characteristics as the one it will have in Kansas City.
“I can’t say the location yet, but it’s very close to Mexico City. We’re going to have another one of these terminals to handle avocados. We export to the United States, and everything goes by truck, so we’re going to try. We already did the first test to handle avocados from Michoacán to the United States. The idea would be to reach Kansas City and distribute refrigerated products from there,” he emphasized.
He reiterated that the routes with which they will begin refrigerated service will be Monterrey-Kansas City and San Luis Potosí-Kansas City.
Regarding the impact of the United States’ tariff policy, Del Cueto indicated that they have implemented a “land bridge” to avoid any impact on products transported through their routes to Canada.
“We’ve found markets in Canada that can be served by producers or suppliers in Mexico, and vice versa. We’ve built a bridge between the United States and Mexico to avoid these tariffs. What we’ve achieved is identifying markets where we already bring products that transit through the United States and don’t pay any taxes or tariffs,” he commented.
He mentioned that, due to the uncertainty surrounding this new policy, they have seen a decline in volume in the steel and automotive sectors, “but despite that, we have identified these new markets .”
He highlighted that among them is the handling of grains , since the country has a great need to import, especially animal feed, in addition to LP gas , where Calgary and Edmonton, in Canada, have a large volume of this energy and which Mexico requires, also pipes, plastic and chemicals .
“Today, we’re bringing grain from Canada to our country, and we’re moving it by rail. The benefit is getting rid of the taxes imposed by the administration of President Donald Trump. We’re bringing in LP gas. There’s a strong need for it in our country, and it’s very affordable in Canada. We’re also bringing in plastic piping; there’s significant demand for this material in Mexico, and we’re identifying household appliances from Mexico to Canada; there’s a very high demand,” he said.
Del Cueto commented that the new rates have made them “creative” and they will continue working to find opportunities for their services.
Similarly, he said that the rebound in intermodal transport was favored by its two services, the Mexico Midwest Express (MMX) Series , which went from being a 900-meter (m) long train to 2,400 m, as well as the recently announced Southeast Mexico Express (SMX) , which will connect the Alabama and Mississippi areas to have a connection with CSX, the third largest railroad in the United States.
“We’ve already signed three agreements with CSX, the first for hydrogen locomotives, and the third for commercial matters that will allow us to connect the southeastern United States with the markets of Texas and Mexico. It won’t be exclusively intermodal; we’ll be able to handle any product with a service where we didn’t previously have direct service,” he explained.
