U.S. President Donald Trump has officially granted permission for the expansion of the Colombia-Solidaridad International Bridge , a key infrastructure connecting Colombia, Nuevo León, with Laredo, Texas, representing a fundamental step in strengthening cross-border trade .
On June 13, Trump greenlit the expansion of the facility, marking a coordinated effort across various levels of the U.S. government and reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening Laredo’s role as a major conduit for North American trade.
Among the officials from Laredo who participated in securing approval for the bridge expansion were members of the U.S. Congress representing Laredo, such as Senator Ted Cruz, who sponsored legislation to expedite the process; Congressman Henry Cuellar, who promoted bipartisan support; and Senator John Cornyn, who supported improvements to border infrastructure.
“The expansion of the Colombia-Solidaridad Bridge is a transformative development for our city, our region, and our partners across the border… This bridge is not only a symbol of connectivity, but also a key driver for the economy. We thank President Trump for recognizing its importance and acting decisively to advance this project,” said Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño.
Laredo, Texas, home to the United States’ largest land port, plays a key role in bilateral trade. In 2024 alone, it averaged 17,000 commercial trucks crossing daily and processed more than $339 billion in trade.
The Colombia-Solidaridad International Bridge was inaugurated on July 31, 1991, and is ISO 28000:2007 certified, which is the certification for the supply chain security management system.
