In the logistics industry, historically dominated by men, female participation has become a key driver of transformation , as highlighted by Jonnathan Solís, Business Development Director of Geotab .

In that regard, she emphasized that women’s talent has not only strengthened the company’s internal structure, but has also contributed to redefining how solutions are developed within the telematics and mobility sector .

The company, of Canadian origin and with more than 25 years of experience, has integrated a strong female influence since its beginnings.

“Women are a fundamental part of Geotab’s DNA,” Solís stated.

He recalled that both the founder’s family and current leaders have promoted this vision over time.

Today, this culture is reflected in a high participation of women at management levels , including vice-presidential positions leading key areas of the business in markets such as the United States and Latin America.

Furthermore, Geotab has sought to highlight female talent beyond the corporate environment, and for Solís, the inclusion of women has had a direct impact on innovation.

“Women bring a different perspective that has allowed us to develop solutions that we didn’t see before,” she explained.

This approach has been especially relevant in the development of more operator-centric products and in building more comprehensive ecosystems within the company’s technology platform.

However, she acknowledged that significant challenges remain in achieving greater representation of women in leadership positions within the industry. More than structural barriers, she noted, there are persistent paradigms that need to be broken.

“There is a perception that women are more ‘soft’, but the reality is different; they are extremely strategic, brave, and results-oriented,” she emphasized.

In this context, various initiatives have been implemented to promote diversity and inclusion , including professional development programs, policies of respect and equality, as well as schemes that promote work-life balance, especially for women seeking to combine their professional growth with motherhood.

Looking ahead, Solís believes that progress towards a more equitable industry does not depend on a single actor.

“It is a joint effort between companies, society and government,” he noted.

Their vision is clear: to create an environment where men and women can fully develop, without prejudice, and where talent is the main driver of growth.

“We need more women in leadership positions. They are not only welcome, they are necessary,” she emphasized.

The push to incorporate more women into the trucking industry in Mexico has entered a new phase. The Scania Women Drivers program , which began as a training initiative, now seeks to consolidate itself as a movement with sustained impact .

The challenge, however, remains profound. Women’s participation in freight transport operations is still limited in a sector historically dominated by men.

The gap in operations is most evident in the official figures. According to data from the General Directorate of Federal Motor Transport (DGAF) , at the end of 2025, only 1% of valid federal licenses belonged to women , with just 6,902 female operators compared to more than 717,000 men.

In the cargo segment, where the greatest activity is concentrated, female participation reaches 5,335 licenses, which is equivalent to just 0.9% at the national level , demonstrating the wide margin that exists for their incorporation into the sector.

This limited participation is compounded by an additional challenge. According to the International Road Transport Union (IRU) , the sector faced a shortage of around 99,000 operators by 2025, a scarcity that is beginning to put pressure on companies’ operations.

In this context, Scania Mexico announced the launch of a new cycle of its Scania Women Drivers program , scheduled to begin in 2026, with the addition of three new cohorts. This will bring the total number of trained cohorts to 10 , solidifying its position as one of the most consistent initiatives for increasing female participation in freight transport.

This is significant progress. For years, the presence of women in the trucking industry has been limited, both in operations and in technical areas. In response to this situation, the program has evolved into a more structured model, with an emphasis on professional development and employability .

This new phase will be developed in collaboration with GIZ Mexico and the develoPPP program, strengthening training standards. The approach includes not only technical training , but also the development of professional and soft skills, as well as job placement programs that facilitate entry into the formal sector.

The goal is to move beyond the perception that operating a truck is a restricted domain. Under the “Drive Like a Woman” concept , the initiative seeks to redefine this idea and position it as a standard of leadership, precision, and resilience within the industry.

The results are beginning to show. To date, the program has trained seven generations, with more than 70 graduates and a job placement rate of nearly 80% , which points toward greater economic independence and permanence in the sector.

Although on paper the procedures should flow normally, in practice the process continues to face obstacles that go beyond the administrative burden.

From the industry’s perspective, the delays are not always due to the volume of work. Eucario Reyes, president of the National Association of Representation in the Trucking Industry (ANRA) , has pointed out that the lack of signatures on files means that only some procedures move forward, while others remain stalled indefinitely, a practice that, he stated, has been observed since the current administration took over.

“They only sign some files, which we all believe and think is because they receive a bribe. That has been seen,” he stressed.

Regarding license plates, Eucario Reyes explained that the problem isn’t the lack of the process itself, but rather the accumulated administrative delays . He noted that there are currently no plates available because their production was postponed and delivery delayed until the end of January, after the process was transferred to Talleres Gráficos de México (Mexico ‘s printing company) instead of the supplier who had previously won the bid. This situation, he pointed out, has created a new waiting period for operators and companies that depend on these documents to put vehicles on the road.

These types of bottlenecks directly impact operators and companies . The inability to release licenses on time hinders the entry of new operators, exacerbates staff shortages, and, in the case of women, reinforces an additional barrier in a sector where their presence is minimal.

Of the total licenses issued in the first nine months of 2025, 86,591 corresponded to national services and 63,368 to international services, reflecting not only the magnitude of the system, but also the growing demand for operators authorized for longer-range routes.

Even with that volume, the DGAF records confirm that, although incidents in the procedures decreased during September 2024, the underlying problems did not disappear.

That month saw 384 incidents , with a gradual reduction week by week, from 145 cases in the first few days to 66 by the end. The drop in numbers does not necessarily mean that processes have returned to normal, but rather that cases are progressing unevenly or are stalled without resolution .

Source: DGAF.

This administrative weakness becomes more evident when examining who manages to obtain a license. As of September 2025 , the DGAF reported 6,949 valid licenses issued to women nationwide. Although 77.3% correspond to freight services and 22.7% to passenger and tourism services, their share within the total remains marginal: barely 0.9% nationwide .

Source: DGAF.

While indicators show fewer incidents , the system still fails to guarantee certainty regarding processing times or the release of paperwork. In a sector pressured by a shortage of operators, each stalled license is not just another file, but a unit that remains idle, a route that goes uncovered, and an opportunity that is lost.

Source: DGAF.

The reduction in incidents may offer some statistical relief, but it doesn’t solve the core problem. Without clear processes, timely signatures, and consistent rules, the issuance of licenses will remain a bottleneck that limits the growth of the trucking industry and keeps people, especially women, out of a sector that needs to grow, not stagnate.

Despite the increased participation of women in various sectors of the transportation industry, wage gaps and inequality in professional roles persist. According to the survey, men continue to concentrate operational tasks, while women are primarily assigned to administrative and support functions, perpetuating deeply rooted cultural practices in hiring processes.

Although, paradoxically, women showed higher levels of education: 44.4% have higher education compared to 19% of men , while only 19.7% of them have basic education compared to 42.2% of men, which reflects a greater preparation on their part, although this advantage does not translate into an equivalent proportion of income or a broader representation.

The railway sector was the most affected, registering a 94.8% decrease, falling from 12.352 billion pesos (MXN) in 2023 to 633 million MXN in 2024.

General freight transport followed , with a contraction of 83.7% in 2024 compared to 2023, plummeting from 38,154 million pesos to 6,206 million pesos. Finally, courier services showed a decrease of 81.7%, going from 11,011 million pesos to 2,014 million pesos.

Scheduled air transport was the least affected sector for women, with total compensation of 8.598 billion pesos in 2024, a decrease of 26.2% compared to 2023, when 11.656 billion pesos were earned. This trend reflected a severe blow to the distribution of women’s wages within the sector.

In this context, Vianey Amador, a logistics specialist and one of the 100 Women in Transport and Logistics , emphasized that sexism continues to be a determining factor in the sector, and that women face obstacles that their male colleagues do not encounter, especially in balancing personal and professional life .

“I think that at a social level, in general, from your family, school, even labor laws, it’s complicated in the following sense. Women were presented with more challenges and obstacles to develop as equals to a male colleague,” she stated.

The pressure on women who are mothers is a clear example of these obstacles, as many must choose between family and profession, which discourages their participation in the sector.

“It’s unfair when you prepare yourself professionally and you want to get ahead, but society and the business environment itself start to push you to choose between your profession and your family,” he said.

Given this situation, Amador proposed solutions that seek to close the gaps and considered a labor reform with a care perspective “essential,” including flexible hours and permits that allow for a balance between life and work .

He also proposed that there be impartial training and assessments to measure skills objectively, ensuring equal conditions.

“Regardless of gender. But you have already given them equal opportunities to compete, because you are training them and guiding them towards an evaluation,” he emphasized.

Finally, she invited women to “raise their voices,” reminding them that, being prepared, they have “a perspective, an opinion, and surely a lot to contribute . “

Among rows of trucks ready to depart, the world of transportation is transformed when these women climb into the cab and take ownership of the road. It’s not the roar of the machinery that makes the difference, but the way three women have burst onto a scene in a profession narrated for decades from a single perspective. Yareli, Sandra, and Andrea are turning a new page—courageous, challenging, and profoundly human .

Yareli: the pride of a family that was always on the road

The first time Yareli Hernández got on a truck, she was just a teenager. She came from a whole family of truck drivers: her grandfather, father, and uncles. It wasn’t a sudden decision for her, but the result of years of persistence: “Teach me, teach me,” she had repeated for as long as she could remember.

At 18 she was already accompanying road trips; today, at 28, she is a primary distribution driver at Coca-Cola FEMSA , capable of operating even full configurations.

For her, driving is a balance between pride and responsibility. Every day begins with a medical check-up, including blood pressure, pulse, and physical and mental well-being; then a complete inspection of her vehicle, tires, oil, trailers, and documents.

“Everything has to be perfect,” she said. Yareli is the first female driver in her family , the example her siblings follow, which she sums up in a single word: courageous . She knows the country faces risks, but says she feels supported by her company and by the training she receives to prevent incidents. Driving has given her a life she loves, and that confidence is evident in every answer.

Sandra: from the office to the road, guided by audacity

Sandra Alcaraz’s story has taken an unexpected turn. She studied communications and worked as an administrative assistant at a small trucking company in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. Nothing seemed to indicate that, years later, she would become a driver.

But the operation gradually drew her in: first she checked diesel, then she accompanied operators, then the trucks started giving her space on the road, until her liking became a conviction.

With nine years of driving experience, she now operates local deliveries for the OXXO fleet . Among the things she left behind is the national highway, a decision made for safety reasons: crime and the increasing risks on federal highways led her to choose a local operation.

Her family went from “that’s not for women” to being proud of seeing her master a unit. When defining herself, she chooses a single word: audacity , because she feels she can do anything. But she also asks for something simple and urgent: more vigilance and safety for those who follow behind the wheel .

Andrea: breaking paradigms is also part of the journey

Andrea Gómez Ángeles grew up watching her father and brother operate trucks, but her career began on the other side of the table: she worked in logistics, monitoring, accounting, and security. Operations weren’t her thing, until Grupo Bimbo opened positions to train women. That’s when she took the leap. She learned maneuvers, city driving, and highway operations.

Today, two years later, she drives a single-axle truck in the metropolitan area. Being a woman in a historically male-dominated profession hasn’t been easy, she explained. Her biggest challenge was breaking paradigms , earning her place, and learning to navigate an environment that sometimes doubts women.

But Andrea is clear about it: this profession demands a deep respect for the vehicle, for the environment, and for the family waiting at home . Her five-year-old son is her greatest motivation; when he sees her arrive in the truck, he understands, with pride, that his mom drives a truck.

His view on insecurity is direct: the country has normalized stigmas about operators, and he combats those prejudices every day by demonstrating that this profession is a fundamental cog in moving the country.

One path, three different stories

All three women share one thing in common: none of this was by chance. In each story, there is a woman who decided to learn, persevere, and prove she could succeed. And while the sector advances in professionalization, safety, and openness to new generations, it is these women who are pushing the boundaries through their daily practice.

However, there are still challenges to face. Currently in Mexico, women suffer a wage gap of between 22% and 28% for the same position compared to men , despite working longer hours. Furthermore, they lack the same level of motivation to obtain the same position.

One story that shows glimpses of the above is that of Clara Fragoso, an operator with Super Transporte Internacional (STI) , who is one of the women who has been operating a tractor-trailer for 20 years . The beginning of that journey, she said, was not difficult, “but terrifying. There were no opportunities for us. The belief system that women were only made to stay at home and when I come along and tell them I wanted to drive a tractor-trailer, it was like, ‘You’re crazy.'”

Even though it was one of the most difficult times in her life, she persevered. “When I arrived at the transport industry and saw the life in transport, their lifestyle was surprising, and as a woman, it was very difficult to adapt, and I didn’t see it as necessary. Even the conditions were terrible for them, and I thought: why do they allow this? Operating a trailer is no different than having a decent life, and I clung to that,” Fragoso recalled.

Clara also went through a difficult personal period: a breakup and, in the process, a job search. Later, she had the opportunity to operate a tractor-trailer, but she faced harassment, bullying, and a lack of opportunities .

“They asked me if I was afraid of operating a trailer, and I told them: I’m more afraid of going back to that moment with my son and saying, ‘I don’t have anything to feed you,’” she emphasized during the Women in the Industry panel at the 100 Women in Transportation and Logisticsevent , organized by T21.

Shantal Torres, procurement director of Leschaco Mexicana , with almost 30 years of experience, explained that throughout this time she has worked in different areas, although the one she is in now has faced challenges .

“We know that in this industry, some more than others, the male presence is stronger, and sometimes—not because I’m a woman, but also because of my age—I’ve encountered some barriers to success. But I feel very proud; today, at 25, it’s totally different. It’s a very challenging but fulfilling career, with transportation, railroads, shipping companies, freight forwarders—this industry isn’t boring,” she explained.

Erika Quezada, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at DHL Express , recalled two pieces of advice that have worked for her professionally. First, “have the necessary training and knowledge to feel confident ,” and second, “create credibility and transparency within the organizations we belong to.”

“I’ve had it happen to me that when you start talking about a customs or transportation issue, especially in a male setting, the comment, ‘Oh, look, he knows,’ then you gain their attention and seriousness, allowing you to develop. This builds confidence and credibility for yourself. We should never limit ourselves from accessing leadership roles,” she explained.

Likewise, he stressed the importance of having a support network of family members and also having time for professional and personal commitments.

Opening doors

Clara Fragoso stated that opening up a space for women in an industry like trucking was driven by the stories of other women who have experienced violence, abandonment, need, and, above all, raising their children.

“That has been a very important part for me, telling them that it’s possible and letting them know through my work that women can do it, and do it well, that we do it just like them. Women in transportation will open many doors for them as entrepreneurs with the response in our work; by doing it with actions, we have achieved great openness,” she emphasized.

In this regard, she stated that for the past five years, there has been a significant shift to integrate more female personnel into the sector, and that the Association of Women Cargo Vehicle Operators (AMO) has been established .

However, she explained that there are still challenges to overcome, such as providing a safe, harassment-free space, comprehensive training, dedicated spaces, and equitable salaries .

Erika Quezada commented that within DHL Express, there are groups focused on gender diversity and inclusion , and although there are few female operators, they seek opportunities to strengthen their participation. She also considered it necessary to promote sisterhood, “because together we are stronger.”

Meanwhile, Shantal Torres mentioned that Leschaco has promoted the inclusion of all people; she also reiterated that “we all have that feeling that we can do more, we can do better, and not just because of gender differences.”

Laura Hernández Hernández, Business Manager for BNSF Railway , said the U.S. railroad is headed by a woman for the first time, and has also created various support groups, including Pride, focused on the LGBT community .

He maintained that at some point, we’ll reach a stage where we only see talent, qualities, and a single drive: being human beings and, above all, professionals, “logistics and transportation people, and we integrate.”
