The heavy vehicle market in Mexico showed contrasting trends during July 2026. Wholesale sales continued to grow , driven by both freight and passenger transport, while retail sales again declined compared to the same month in 2025 .

According to the Statistical Bulletin of the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor-Trailer Producers (ANPACT) , during July of this year, two thousand 490 units were sold wholesale , a growth of 21.8% compared to the two thousand 045 of the seventh month of 2025.

With this result, between January and July wholesale sales reached 17,237 vehicles , a figure 5.7% higher than the 16,303 units sold during the same period last year.

The cargo segment sold 2,141 units wholesale during July 2026, a year-over-year increase of 20.3 percent . Among the fastest-growing categories, Class 5 stood out with a 378.0 percent  increase , followed by Class 4  with 63.7 percent , while fifth-wheel tractors saw a 17.0 percent increase . In contrast, Class 8 declined by 11.0 percent.

In the January-July period of 2026, cargo totaled 14,612 units , a 5.2 percent increase . However, fifth-wheel tractor-trailers experienced a 13.7 percent decrease , with 6,665 units compared to 7,720 during the same period in 2025. Class 8 trucks, on the other hand, saw a 16.5 percent increase.

Passenger traffic also showed a recovery in the wholesale channel. During July, 349 units were sold , 31.2% more than in 2015. Class 7 buses stood out with a growth of 147.3% , as did intercity buses, which increased by 30.0% . Year-to-date, the segment totaled 2,625 units, an increase of 8.8%, although intercity buses still reported a decline of 26.3%.

Retail sales return to negative territory

Unlike wholesale, retail sales contracted during July 2026. Two thousand nine hundred and forty vehicles were sold during the period , a decrease of 8.6% compared to the three thousand two hundred and fifteen units sold in July 2025. In the January-July period, the market totaled 18 thousand seven hundred and thirty-four units , 20.3% less than the 23 thousand five hundred and fifteen units sold during the same period last year.

Retail sales of cargo trucks reached 2,530 units in July of this year, a year-over-year decrease of 5.1 percent . Although fifth-wheel tractors grew 8.0 percent and Class 5 trucks advanced 23.7 percent, Class 8 trucks declined 23.7 percent and Class 4 trucks fell 17.0 percent.

Overall, cargo sales continued to decline by 17.9% , with 16,156 units sold. Fifth-wheel tractor-trailers remain among the most pressured segments, with a contraction of 29.5% , falling from 10,525 units between January and July 2025 to 7,418 in the same period of 2026.

Passenger sales also failed to reverse the trend in the retail channel. During July 2026, 410 units were sold , 25.6% fewer than in 2025. Class 8 saw the largest drop at 91.4% , while Class 7 decreased by 3.9%. In contrast, intercity buses increased by 24.7%, and Classes 5 and 6 grew by 44.0%.

Between January and July of this year, retail passenger sales contracted by 32.8% , with 2,578 units sold. Intercity buses saw a 26.9% decrease , while Class 8 buses registered a cumulative decline of 60.3%.

July’s results confirm an uneven market recovery: wholesale has accumulated growth of 5.7%, while retail is still 20.3% below its 2025 level . Although fifth-wheel tractors recovered ground in the monthly comparison, they maintain double-digit declines in the year-to-date figures for both wholesale and retail.

July was once again a difficult month for the wholesale marketing of heavy vehicles , the industry faced a 62.4% drop compared to the same month in 2024, placing two thousand 045 units compared to five thousand 441 the previous year, according to the monthly report of the  National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT) .

Both freight and passenger sales recorded sharp declines, although the greatest impact was in the passenger segment, with a 69.5% drop, while freight fell 61.1%.

Within the cargo segment, fifth-wheel tractor units plummeted 69.8% in July, dropping from 2,513 units in 2024 to just 760 in 2025.

Classes 4, 6, and 8 also reported declines of more than 40%, reflecting slowed demand and possibly adjustments to fleet renewal plans.

The outlook for the January-July period of this year was also discouraging. Wholesale sales in the cargo segment totaled 13,890 units, 49.8% less than in the same period in 2024.

The cumulative volume reflects a profound slowdown, with cargo losing almost half of its volume, but passengers were the hardest hit.

Retail , for its part, showed a less aggressive slowdown. Total retail sales fell 36.3% in July 2025, with 3,218 units sold, compared to 5,048 in the same month the previous year. The cargo segment fell 38.5%, while passenger sales fell 22.3%.

Among the highest-volume products, fifth-wheel tractors also showed a significant drop in this category, with a decrease of 54.2 percent.

The ANPACT report also reflected that cumulative retail sales registered a widespread decline of 24.6%, indicating that the market continues to face a profound slowdown, with still weak signs of recovery.

On the downside… and with the warning lights on, after a year of momentum, the heavy-duty sector began 2025 weathering economic setbacks and falling demand . In response, the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor-Trailer Producers (ANPACT) cut its annual wholesale sales projection , as it faced a first half of the year that forced it to recalculate its route.

The new wholesale sales estimate projects a closing price of 35,935 units , compared to the 45,036 originally forecast, representing a 20.2% reduction in its own expectations.

The 35,935 projected wholesale units were divided into 30,971 for cargo and 4,964 for passengers .

In terms of cargo, fifth-wheel tractors dominate the estimate with more than 18,000 units.

The new forecast, announced by Rogelio Arzate , executive president of ANPACT, represents a change in the association’s usual trend, which in previous years tended to adjust its figures upwards .

Now, after a semester with a 47.7% drop in wholesale sales , the agency decided to lower its expectations for the end of the year.

“We’re in a year of readjustment, with a very sharp contraction. That’s why we’re updating our figures responsibly,” Arzate said.

The figure represents a 45.9% drop compared to 2024 , a record year in which 66,455 units were sold wholesale , setting a high bar for the industry.

With this adjustment, the estimated volume for 2025 is at levels similar to those between 2011 and 2014 , when annual sales ranged between 32,000 and 39,000 units , he explained.

“It’s not the worst drop compared to 2009 or 2020, but we are returning to levels from more than a decade ago,” he added.

In addition to this forecast, Arzate also warned about the impact that imported used heavy vehicles will have on the recovery of the domestic market.

Although cumulative figures show a 24.8% decrease in volume , the introduction of these types of units continues to represent a brake on fleet renewal.

“For every 100 new units sold, 59 used ones are imported. Although the volume has decreased, this figure remains the highest in recent years,” he explained.

The agency is working with federal government authorities and business organizations to minimize the influx of used vehicles and advance a formal scrappage scheme , as part of a strategy to strengthen the domestic market, Arzate said.

Fewer used vehicle imports , combined with progress in fleet renewal, could open up better conditions for the second half of the year, he said.

Although the environment remains challenging, ANPACT is confident that the second half of the year will stabilize the decline and advance the necessary steps to strengthen the domestic market.

The revised outlook and the call to curb the influx of used vehicles together seek to pave the way for a more orderly and sustainable recovery in the coming years.

During May 2025, the heavy vehicle industry in Mexico registered widespread declines in sales and production , while exports showed an upturn, according to figures presented by the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT) and the Mexican Association of Automobile Distributors (AMDA) .

Wholesale sales totaled 2,366 units , representing a 32.2% contraction compared to the same month in 2024.

The cargo segment fell 17.2%, with 2,080 units , while the passenger segment fell 70.7%, with only 286 vehicles placed.

From January to May 2025, the drop in freight was 39.6% and in passengers 50.1% compared to the same cycle in 2024.

By energy source , 2,345 units sold were diesel-powered in the fifth month of the year, a 27.9% decrease compared to the same month last year; 18 units were natural gas-powered (-52.6%) and three were electric, unchanged from the previous year.

Total production also showed a decline. In May , 10,576 units were manufactured , 12.9% fewer than in May 2024. Of that total, 10,263 corresponded to the cargo segment (-10.5%) and 313 to the passenger segment (-53.7%). Year-to-date, production totaled 63,208 units, representing a 20.9% decrease compared to the same period last year.

In contrast, exports grew compared to the same month last year. During May, 13,045 units were shipped abroad , an increase of 31.3 percent.

The United States accounted for 12,152 units, a 23.3% increase, followed by Canada, with a 1,122.4% increase, and Latin American countries such as Chile, Colombia, and Peru, which also reported significant increases. Despite the strong monthly performance, exports fell 12% in the January-May period.

Regarding the energy source of the exported vehicles, 12,926 units were diesel-powered, up 32.6%; 111 were natural gas-powered (-38.3%), and eight were electric, double the number in May 2024.

In the domestic market , retail sales totaled 3,367 units in the fifth month of the year, a 21.3 percent decrease. Between January and May, 17,477 units were sold , representing a 20.88 percent annual decrease. AMDA reported that the cargo segment accounted for 84.8 percent of total sales, while passenger sales contributed 15.2 percent.

According to Guillermo Rosales , executive president of AMDA, the negative performance is due to a combination of factors: a high comparison base due to the record year recorded in 2024, a persistent economic slowdown, and the effects of the change in environmental regulations that modified the technologies permitted for commercialization.

He also warned that gross fixed investment showed declines that directly impact demand for new units.

Another factor keeping pressure on the market is the import of used heavy vehicles . Although from January to April 2025 there was a 24.9% decrease in volume compared to the same period in 2024, the penetration rate increased: for every 100 new units sold, 58 used ones were imported, the highest level since 2022, according to Rogelio Arzate , executive president of ANPACT.

“We’ll have to wait for April’s sales results, as the market decline will be even more evident there, because uncertainty is significantly slowing fleet renewal and growth projects,” the general manager of a heavy-duty vehicle distributor shared last April, anticipating a decline in unit sales.

The forecast was not wrong. Last April saw the lowest level of tractor-trailer sales in the first four months of the year, which, while challenged by the presence of Holy Week during this period, also saw a slowdown in unit sales , both wholesale and retail.

The monthly report generated by the National Association of Bus, Truck, and Tractor-Trailer Producers (ANPACT) identifies that wholesale sales of tractor-trailers reached a total of 865 units in April 2025, the first month in which sales fell below the 1,000 mark in this category.

Thus, tractor-trailer sales last April represented a 57% drop compared to the same month in 2024.

As for total sales in the cargo segment, they stood at 1,634 units , which also represented a 57% decrease compared to the previous month.

Retail sales did not offer a different path for tractor-trailers, as 1,310 units were sold last April, a 32% drop compared to the same month last year, according to ANPACT figures.

Retail sales in the cargo segment reached 2,347 vehicles in April, down 36% compared to April 2024.

Regarding cumulative sales in the cargo segment for the January-April cycle, wholesale sales totaled 8,117 units, a 44.2% drop compared to the same period in 2024.

Cumulative retail sales were 11,725 ​​units, a 20.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2024, ANPACT reported.

During March 2025, the sale of heavy vehicles in the country reported a marked slowdown, with falls in most segments, according to figures from the statistical bulletin of the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Truck Producers (ANPACT) .

In retail sales , 3,537 units were sold , a decrease compared to the 4,322 registered in March 2024. In the cumulative January to March, the figure rose to 11,010 units, below the 13,163 of last year.

By segment, freight accounted for the majority of retail sales in March, with 2,925 units. Fifth-wheel tractors accounted for the largest volume, with 1,695 units , although they also registered a 12.6% decrease compared to March of the previous year.

In passenger traffic, 592 units were sold, down from 738 last year. Despite the overall decline, intercity buses stood out with a 46.1% increase, selling 168 units.

Wholesale sales totaled 2,755 units in March , a figure lower than the 4,651 in the same month of 2024. In the first quarter, 7,752 units were reported, also below the 12,880 in the same period of the previous year.

The freight segment accounted for 2,212 units in March wholesale sales , with a marked decline in Class 8 and tractor-trailers. In passenger vehicles, 543 units were sold, with intercity buses again standing out, with a 44% increase compared to 2024.

March figures show a slower start to the year in heavy vehicle sales. The entry into force of NOM-044 forced manufacturers and transporters to accelerate their transition to new technologies. Added to this is the trade uncertainty with the United States, marked by possible changes in Donald Trump’s policies. The sector remains on the move, but with more careful decisions.

The National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT) announced that the heavy vehicle market began 2025 with a 32.5% drop in wholesale sales compared to January 2024.

This behavior is largely due to the high levels of inventory that some brands and distributors accumulated at the end of 2024, anticipating the change in environmental regulations NOM-044 .

The results shared by ANPACT show that the cargo segment registered a 25.2% drop in wholesale sales, with especially pronounced declines in the categories of Class 4 trucks (-87.2%), Class 5 (-85.5%) and Class 6 (-82.0%). Meanwhile, fifth-wheel tractor-trailers, which represent the largest sales volume, fell 8.5 percent .

The passenger segment, for its part, suffered a 63.6% drop , with a significant decrease in the sale of urban and intercity buses.

Unlike wholesale sales, the retail market showed a better performance , with a more moderate contraction of 11.7% in the total units sold.

In particular, tractor-trailers registered a growth of 4.2% , while Class 8 trucks advanced 5.2% compared to January 2024, suggesting that the inventory that distributors managed to accumulate before the close of the previous year has begun to be displaced.

Regarding NOM-044 , various sources have confirmed to T21 that some brands have exhausted their inventory of units with Euro 5 engines since last November, so they have completely transitioned to Euro 6.

This is why there has been an adjustment in wholesale sales, while the drop in retail volume was smaller, while in categories such as tractor-trailers marginal growth was recorded.

This adjustment, coupled with uncertainty about the availability of ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) , is slowing the purchase of new units, reflected in the drop in wholesale sales.

El cargo After a record close in 2024, heavy vehicle sales start the year with a slowdown apareció primero en T21.

The Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) and the Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT) presented the results of the heavy vehicle market for November 2024, highlighting record figures in wholesale sales and historical accumulations that place Mexico as a leader in exports in this sector . 

In November, wholesale sales reached 6,521 units , representing an increase of 34% compared to the same month in 2023. This performance brought the cumulative total from January to November 2024 to 58,349 units , a growth of 17% compared to the same period of the previous year. 

 “We are very proud of these results, which reflect the efforts of the entire industry to exceed our annual goals,” said Rogelio Arzate, executive president of ANPACT .

The cargo segment led sales, with a 39% growth , selling 5,758 units in November. As for passenger vehicles, these registered a more moderate increase of 5.1%, with 763 units sold in the same month. 

In terms of production , the industry showed a slight recovery in November, reaching 18,199 units produced, an increase of 2% compared to the previous month. However, the cumulative figure from January to November registered a decrease of 3.5%, with 197,597 units manufactured. 

“Despite challenges such as supply chain disruptions, we continue to maintain a high level of production that allows us to respond to local and international demand,” said Arzate.

On the other hand, 13,268 units were exported in November , a 6% decrease compared to the same month last year. However, in the cumulative period from January to November, exports totaled 142,087 units, consolidating Mexico as the world leader in this area. 

“We remain the leading supplier of heavy vehicles to the United States and Canada, which confirms our strategic position in the global market,” added Guillermo Rosales, CEO of AMDA.

The electric and hybrid vehicle market showed significant progress during 2024. Sales of heavy electric vehicles grew by 20.7%, reaching 169 units, while hybrids registered an increase of 52%, with 127 units sold. “The transition to cleaner technologies remains a priority for our industry, and these results are a reflection of that commitment,” Rosales stressed. 

With the results obtained up to November, the industry is on track to close the year with a historic sales record. 

“We are very close to meeting our goal of 60,000 units by 2024, which will exceed the figures achieved in previous years and will reaffirm the strength of our sector,” Rosales concluded. 

Experts commented that the heavy vehicle industry in Mexico continues to demonstrate its economic relevance and leadership in the global market, setting a precedent for the years to come.
