The heavy vehicle market in Mexico showed contrasting performance during September 2026. Wholesale sales continued to be positive, driven mainly by the cargo segment, while retail sales registered a further decline compared to the same month in 2025.

According to the Statistical Bulletin of the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor-Trailer Producers (ANPACT) , during the ninth month of the year, two thousand 937 units were sold wholesale, a growth of 18.4% compared to the two thousand 481 registered in September 2025.

With this result, between January and September wholesale sales reached 22,893 vehicles, a figure 8.3% higher than the 21,135 units sold during the same period last year.

The cargo segment sold 2,567 units wholesale during September 2026, a year-over-year increase of 30.4 percent. Among the fastest-growing categories was Class 7, which saw a 2,100 percent increase, rising from one to 22 units, followed by Class 8 at 101.7 percent, and fifth-wheel tractors at 47.1 percent. In contrast, Class 5 declined by 69.6 percent, Class 6 fell by 21.8 percent, and Class 4 decreased by 21.2 percent.

In the cumulative period from January to September 2026 , cargo totaled 19,559 units, a 9.9 percent increase. However, fifth-wheel tractor-trailers saw a 5.3 percent decline with 8,944 units sold compared to 9,446 during the same period in 2025. Class 8 trucks, on the other hand, accumulated a 31.5 percent increase with 5,596 vehicles sold.

Passenger traffic showed a different pattern in the wholesale channel. During September, 370 units were sold, 27.7% fewer than in 2015. Class 7 saw a 3.6% increase, while Classes 5 and 6 declined by 68.8%, Class 8 fell by 57.9%, and intercity buses decreased by 40.7%. Year-to-date, the segment totaled 3,334 units, a marginal growth of 0.1%.

Retail maintains the contraction

Retail sales continued their downward trend in September 2026. Two thousand nine hundred and fifty-two vehicles were sold during the month, a decrease of 11.2% compared to the three thousand three hundred and twenty-three units sold in September 2025. For the January-September period, the market totaled 24 thousand five hundred and seventy-four units, 18.1% less than the 30 thousand and eight sold during the same period last year.

Retail sales of cargo trucks reached 2,521 units in September, a year-over-year decrease of 5.9 percent. Class 7 saw an 875 percent increase, rising from four to 39 units, while Class 8 advanced 26.1 percent. In contrast, Class 5 declined 41.5 percent, Class 4 fell 32.9 percent, fifth-wheel tractors decreased 12.7 percent, and Class 6 dropped 7.0 percent.

Overall, cargo sales continued to decline by 15.1%, with 21,164 units sold. Fifth-wheel tractors remained among the most pressured segments, contracting by 26.0%, falling from 13,116 units between January and September 2025 to 9,700 in the same period of 2026. Class 8 also remained in negative territory, with a cumulative decrease of 2.8%.

Passenger sales also failed to reverse the trend in the retail channel . During September 2026, 431 units were sold, 33.1% fewer than the 644 sold in the same month of 2025. Classes 5 and 6 saw an 83.3% drop, while Class 8 decreased by 64.0%. Intercity buses declined by 40.4%, and Class 7 fell by 6.3%.

Between January and September of this year , retail passenger sales contracted by 32.8%, with 3,410 units sold. Intercity buses saw a 26.7% decline, while Class 8 buses registered a cumulative drop of 60.4%, one of the steepest declines in the segment.

September’s results maintain the gap between the two channels: wholesale shows an 8.3% growth, while retail remains 18.1% below its 2025 target. Although Class 8 and fifth-wheel tractors boosted wholesale freight sales during the month, the cumulative performance of tractors continues to reflect weakness, particularly in the retail channel.
