With expertise in a high-demand segment such as mining, Total Trucks México® (TTM) , now as a Master Dealer of Mack Trucks® in the country, knows that to maintain acceleration in the transportation market, the focus must be on service .

For Juan Carlos Uribe, director of TTM, it is clear that the product portfolio is a foundation for its advancement in the market, but, above all, its vision of service is present in the main cities of Mexico through its branches or with mobile workshops .

“The Mack truck is synonymous with strength. It can handle heavy-duty or double-trailer needs, where we are perfectly identified, but it also offers the versatility for light-duty work. Therefore, over the next six to seven years, we estimate achieving a market share of between 7 and 10%,” Uribe explained.

The Mack tractor’s natural configuration allows for use in demanding applications such as double trailers, tank handling, gondolas, and construction, among others.

While Mack’s brand image is linked to the vocational sector, the formula of a portfolio that serves diverse segments, along with a solid service structure, allows TTM to visualize that, in the short term, Mack trucks will be the best option for transporters. “Many customers have a high level of recognition of the brand and its strength ,” added Juan Carlos Uribe.

Regarding service, the executive stated that they will continue to expand their coverage , particularly focusing on the central region of the country, ports, and borders. Mobile workshops will be present in the south-southeast , while second-tier dealers and Mack-certified workshops will also be added .

An additional lever for Mack’s offering in Mexico is the availability of financing plans with the brand’s financial institution. ” We offer very competitive rates , so all the ingredients are in place to effectively serve transporters.”

One factor TTM highlights is Mack’s 125 years of experience in the market, which now, with the presence of the Volvo Group in Nuevo León, provides greater certainty to the market.

Today, Mack’s portfolio, in addition to vocational trucks, focuses on Class 8 tractors with 48″ and 70″ cabs , with manual and semi-automatic transmissions. The Day Cab version is also available.

“Regarding the regulatory change in force in Mexico starting in January 2025, with the update of NOM-044, at Mack we were prepared with our GHG engines, approved for Euro VI standards, to meet this new challenge,” Uribe emphasized.

Infrastructure, energy supply and establishing a strategic alliance with governments are part of the challenges for the electrification of heavy and public transport, agreed sector participants.

Luz Elena Jurado, North America Plant Project Controller at Volvo Group Mexico , considered that the auto transport sector faces the most significant challenge in passenger transport.

“When we talk about moving society, the government is more sensitive and willing to reach a negotiation, but where do you find a subsidy for a freight carrier? When a company says it requires clean technology, but you don’t increase my rate, maybe I’ll pay you 10% more, but the investment in a tractor-trailer is much higher if you’re talking about an electric one. If you get a good rate, you need something to lower the cost,” he explained.

He commented that there are countries that have successfully developed these technologies; for example, in the United States they received funding of 208 million dollars to produce more electric trucks and make modifications to their plant.

While in Europe the main challenge is to create a network of chargers, they created a synergy with their competitors to speed up the installation of this device.

“That gives us a reference for what we can do in Mexico to speed things up. Of course, that agreement is in Europe and we are still competitors, but we will have to see how we can customize it to make it faster,” he explained.

He also explained that they are working on a series of actions with a partner to give batteries a second use, such as solar panels for private homes, and with governments to promote the electrification of transport.

For Jesús Padilla, CEO of Grupo CISA, an urban transport company that currently operates around 2,400 units with three brands of electric vehicles, he explained that the main challenge is the massification of public and private transport.

The understanding of the authorities in the country is also required to build a clear policy , financing and subsidy schemes, “which is not happening.”

“We are calling on the authorities and this type of dialogue should involve the National Finance Agency, the National Infrastructure Fund, Banobras, and the Treasury, talking to us about the financial part,” he said during the panel Electrification of public transport and heavy transport: Clean energy and accessibility at the Mobility Summit.

Eduardo Sánchez, general director of the Nuevo León Renewable Energy Agency , commented that financing for this type of project and promoting consumption will be key.

“The synergy at both the state and country level and with international organizations to seek and lower those financing funds so that the same projects that are being proposed can see the light,” he said.

Rafael Burgos, head of Enel X Mexico, said that they have identified different challenges, some focused on the technical part , such as the availability of the recharging network and evaluating the best location for electric charging stations.

He also considered that the same companies, especially those focused on last-mile transport, have implemented their own stations, but what would happen if they were opened to public transport?

“What happens if these electric stations are opened to general service, including for tractor-trailers? Although there is already talk of what type of regulation will be, how can it be done because at this time in Mexico the sale of energy and its use for this type of application is permitted. We have to work on these types of rules in order to be able to open it to the public and work closely with the regulatory entities and bodies to be able to open this type of installation in different parts of the Republic and with different uses,” he said.

In this regard, the specialists gave their opinions on the changes in energy laws, which require an analysis table to discuss, among other issues, a national strategy for the electrification of transport , as well as distributed generation to have a nearby supply, energy storage.

After announcing last April that it would install a plant in Mexico, Volvo Group defined its headquarters, and through a statement shared by the firm, it is stated that the manufacturing headquarters in Mexico will be in Monterrey , which will serve as supporting the growth of the Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks brands .

However, through a message today, the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, specifies that Ciénega de Flores will be the headquarters of the manufacturing plant that considers an approximate investment of 700 million dollars (mdd), and is part of a strategic move for Volvo Trucks , which seeks to regain ground in a market it abandoned almost four years ago after its abrupt departure in December 2020.

In that sense, the company explained through a press release that Nuevo León provides a mature supply and production ecosystem , which will complement and strengthen the resilience and flexibility of Volvo’s industrial footprint in North America.

Likewise, the decision to establish this plant in Monterrey is not fortuitous. The city offers significant logistics efficiencies that will support sales in both the southwest and western regions of the United States as well as Mexico and Latin America.

The plant installed in Nuevo León would have an approximate size of 1.7 million square feet and will be equipped for the complete assembly of conventional vehicles, including the production and painting of cabins. “This would be the company’s largest investment, which proposes building a plant to manufacture tractor-trailers,” declared Samuel García.

The project adds to the recent acquisition of a Commercial Vehicle Group (CVG) production plant in North Carolina for approximately $40 million, with which Volvo seeks to strengthen its production capacity in North America.

Despite the skepticism of some Mexican transporters, who in recent months expressed to T21 that they still remember the negative impact of the departure of Volvo Trucks in 2020, the return of the brand through this new plant could mean a resurgence in the market, especially in the export segment to the United States.
