The Port of Long Beach began 2025 with its strongest January on record and its second-busiest month on record , driven largely by retailers moving cargo ahead of anticipated tariffs on goods from China, Mexico and Canada.

The port handled 952,733 20-foot containers (TEU) in January , 41.4% more than in the same month last year and surpassing the previous record, set in January 2022, by 18.9 percent.

Imports increased by 45% to 471,649 TEU and exports increased by 14% to 98,655 TEU. Empty containers circulating through the port increased by 45.9% to 382,430 TEU.

“It is encouraging to start the year with such strength. I thank and congratulate all of our partners for their hard work. We will continue to focus on improving both our competitiveness and our sustainability, regardless of the uncertainties in the supply chain,” said Mario Cordero, executive director of the Port of Long Beach.

The strong start to 2025 marks the port’s eighth consecutive monthly year-over-year increase in cargo and follows a record year with 9,649,724 TEUs moved in 2024 .

“Our longshoreman workforce, marine terminal operators and industry partners continue to move a record amount of cargo to make this the premier gateway for trans-Pacific trade. We head into 2025 with a positive focus on our efforts to provide top-notch customer service while growing sustainably,” said Bonnie Lowenthal, president of the Port of Long Beach Commission.

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) announced on Tuesday that they have reached a tentative agreement on all points of a new six-year master contract , thus avoiding a longshoremen’s strike at US East Coast ports that was scheduled for January 15.

According to a statement released by both parties, they agreed to continue operating under the current contract until the union can meet with its full Wage Scale Committee and schedule a ratification vote, and USMX members can ratify the terms of the final contract.

“We are pleased to announce that ILA and USMX have reached a tentative agreement on a new six-year ILA-USMX master contract, subject to ratification, thereby avoiding any work stoppage on January 15, 2025,” the two sides said in a joint statement.

“This agreement protects ILA’s current jobs and establishes a framework for deploying technologies that will create more jobs while modernizing East Coast and Gulf ports, making them safer and more efficient, and creating the capacity they need to keep our supply chains strong,” the statement said.

“This is a win-win agreement that creates ILA jobs , supports American consumers and businesses, and maintains the U.S. economy as a key hub in the global marketplace,” they said.

Details of the new tentative agreement will not be disclosed to allow ILA rank-and-file members and USMX members to review and approve the final document.

El cargo New Contract Agreement Prevents Strike at East Coast Ports in the US apareció primero en T21.

The Port of Corpus Christi moved 53 million tons through its ship channel in the third quarter of 2024, a new quarterly record driven by increases in crude oil and dry bulk movements.

The 53 million tons handled in the third quarter of 2024 represented a 2% increase over the same period of the previous year, which was the highest quarter in the port’s history.

The Port of Corpus Christi experienced a 3% increase in crude oil shipments from the same period last year (to 33.5 million tons) through port infrastructure and customer facilities.

There were also modest increases in volumes of refined products, liquefied natural gas and dry bulk goods. So far this year, port customers have moved 152.5 million tons of commodities through the waterway, slightly ahead of the same period a year earlier.

Higher volumes of crude oil have been moved in the nine months of the current year , with 2.4 million barrels per day transported this year to date, compared with 2.3 million barrels per day in the same period in 2023.

“After a slightly slower start to the year compared to the record our customers saw at the end of 2023, we are pleased to see the tremendous rebound in volume in the third quarter of 2024. Thanks to continued investment in our maritime infrastructure, the Port of Corpus Christi and its strong customer base remain well positioned for future growth,” said Kent Britton, CEO of the Port of Corpus Christi.

The fourth and final phase of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project is projected to be completed in early 2025.
