The organization stated in a press release that road closures and blockades in strategic logistics corridors are having a severe impact on the national economy.

In that regard, he indicated that more than 56% of cargo in Mexico is transported by land, so he estimated that road blockades could cause losses exceeding 750 million pesos (mdp) daily .

“In prolonged or simultaneous scenarios, losses can escalate between three and six billion pesos in a week, affecting companies, workers and consumers,” he stressed.

The agency reiterated that each stopped transport unit can represent losses of up to 180,000 pesos per day, in addition to generating disruptions in inventories, contractual breaches and delays in deliveries , with chain effects that impact exports, logistics costs and supply of essential inputs.

He stressed that the impact not only falls on the industry, but also on millions of families who depend on the continuous flow of goods and services throughout the country.

Canacintra acknowledged the legitimate right to protest, but cautioned that dialogue must be the primary means of reaching agreements and sustainable solutions. Therefore, it called on the federal government to keep institutional channels open, prioritize dialogue, and avoid measures that could harm the national economy . It also reiterated its willingness to collaborate as a partner in promoting solutions.

So far, truckers and farmers have carried out blockades, partial closures and takeovers of toll booths in at least 14 states of the country.

Some of the routes affected with total closures are: Baja California in San Luis Río Colorado-Mexicali kilometer (km) 3+200; Guanajuato on the La Piedad–Pénjamo highway km 075+000, and in Hidalgo , where protesters are on the Álamo-Tamazunchale highway km 020+300.

Partial road closures are occurring in Chihuahua and Tamaulipas ; in addition, there are protesters at some toll plazas in the State of Mexico, Michoacán and Sinaloa .

The indefinite strike called by ANTAC and FNRCM responds to problems that have persisted in the sector: insecurity on highways , high operating costs and lack of progress on previously established agreements with federal authorities, according to these organizations themselves.

In the reference month, two of the four industries in the Business Confidence Indicator (BCI) registered increases , with construction showing the largest increase, rising 1.3 points compared to last February, reaching a level of 47.8. Within this sector, the appropriate time to invest was the component that showed the greatest increase, rising 2.7 points on a monthly basis.

During March, the Trade Confidence Index (ICE) rose 0.1 points compared to the previous month, reaching 48.8 points. The country’s future economic outlook was the best-performing component during the period, increasing by 1.8 points month-over-month.

The ICE for manufacturing industries was 47.8 points, 0.5 units less than in February 2026. The monthly behavior of the indicator showed declines in its five components, with the most favorable time to invest being the largest decline (0.7 points).

Meanwhile, the ICE for private non-financial services fell 0.9 points in March 2026 compared to February, settling at 48.5 points. The only component with positive performance was the ” opportune time to invest ,” registering a 0.5-point increase month-over-month.

All four IGOEC indicators fell below the 50-point threshold, reflecting pessimism in business confidence during the cycle, in a global economic environment where uncertainty still prevails, stemming from unilateral trade decisions and geopolitical tensions such as those in the Middle East.

Construction of bridges for the movement of land cargo through Puerto Verde will begin in mid-2026 , with an investment of 240 million dollars .

Arturo García Luna, executive vice president of Grupo Puerto Verde, said the goal is for trucks to begin operating on this new infrastructure between June and August 2028 .

“It’s a bridge that will have capacity based on demand. We can start with 4,000 boxes a day or go up to 15,000 or 18,000 boxes a day. Our size doesn’t depend on the bridge itself, but on the inspection areas we have at customs, which have capacity based on demand. We don’t want a parking lot above the river, but rather an inspection area that is agile, adequate, and that offers the benefit of being able to move quickly,” he commented in an interview.

Puerto Verde will be a corridor between the cities of Eagle Pass, Texas, and Piedras Negras, Coahuila. It will feature a bridge and trade corridor, improving the speed and ease of processing rail and freight traffic.

He explained that this project includes a vehicular bridge for motor transport and, in the future, a rail connection , both of which already have presidential approval. This would replicate what is being done in bilateral trade between Nuevo Laredo and Laredo.

García Luna explained that an investment will also be made in real estate development on both sides of the border . He assured that the proposed infrastructure will allow for the expedited movement of merchandise between Mexico and the United States and vice versa, as well as joint inspection.

“We’re going to seek to integrate what exists today with the existing rail infrastructure, which currently handles between 15 and 18 trains per day through Piedras Negras. This could increase to 30 or 35 trains if this new bridge were used, which would expand operating capacity. It has more rail and truck crossings because they’re dedicated to trade, as there are no combined crossings, and that helps streamline freight,” he stated.

He indicated that 18,000 trucks cross the Nuevo Laredo III Bridge alone per day , while the flow in Colombia is smaller. “What we’re looking for is a dedicated bridge; our niche market is commerce.”

“The saturation of the dedicated bridges, of which there are only two, made it possible to implement a strategy to create a resilience line like the one we are proposing. The increase in freight flows across Highway 57, in Piedras Negras, the second safest city in Mexico, has increased infrastructure, allowing new companies to invest in the region, creating jobs, construction, and many other things that add value to the project,” he stated.

According to the latest report from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) , cargo between the United States and Mexico reached $74.4 billion last July, 5.2% more than the same month in 2024.

Of that figure, trucks moved $87.3 billion of cargo , a 0.6% increase over the same period. Meanwhile, railroads moved $14.4 billion of cargo, a 10.1% year-over-year decrease.

Laredo, El Paso, and Otay Mesa are the main truck ports with Mexico; while Laredo, Eagle Pass, and El Paso are for rail connections.

In Mexico, trade and supply chain finance (TSCF) supports only 8% of goods trade, so access to finance in the country is among the lowest among economies analyzed by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) .

According to the report Trade Finance in Central America and Mexico, prepared by both institutions, around a quarter of merchandise importers and exporters in the country have access to financing, despite the fact that supply chain financing has made some progress in the Mexican economy and, to a lesser extent, in Guatemala and Honduras.

The report highlighted significant potential for growth and diversification of the currently concentrated market for TSCF, as doubling coverage and aligning costs with advanced economy standards is projected to increase exports and imports by up to 7.4 % in Mexico, 8.9% in Honduras, and 7.8% in Guatemala, adding more than $90 billion in combined trade volume.

“Inadequate access to trade finance acts as a prohibitive cost of trade, holding back trade and closing economic opportunities for businesses and people, particularly in developing economies,” stressed Johanna Hill, Deputy Director-General of the WTO.

According to the analysis, Mexico’s strong export growth, approximately 5% annually in recent years, as well as its greater integration into global value chains, especially in manufacturing sectors, requires greater access to trade financing in the future.

Along these lines, he indicated that trade in intermediate and capital goods, which represented 57% of total imports in 2022, “tends to depend more on trade financing.”

Hill noted that limited access to financing is particularly relevant for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as women-owned companies, who “face difficulties accessing commercial financing.”

He added that in the countries and regions studied to date, only a limited share of trade is supported by trade and supply chain finance, while in advanced economies this proportion is at least 60 percent .

“In each of the regions we examined, trade finance was highly concentrated. Very few banks direct very little financing toward a small group of well-established, large operators,” he noted.

In this regard, he considered it important to double trade finance coverage, as this would help diversify its geographic footprint and increase its volume.

“More trade finance means not only greater trade integration, but also greater socioeconomic inclusion,” he added.

Looking ahead, trade transactions in developing countries should continue to be supported by trade finance programs implemented by the IFC and other multilateral development banks.

In several emerging economies, reducing the costs of maritime transport, financing, and border clearance is key to international competitiveness.

“The adoption of digital technologies is essential in this regard,” he noted.

The policy recommendations included in the report aim to strengthen supply chain markets through regulatory harmonization, digital innovation, improved risk assessments, and improved access for small and women-owned businesses.

In turn, construction fell 1.8% monthly and 4.4% annually .

These figures come after inflation fell in the first half of 2025, reaching 3.69%annually, slightly below the forecast of the financial institution Ve por más , which was 3.74% and 3.72% of the consensus.

According to his analysis, year-on-year inflation eased again as some of the last pressures on agricultural goods dissipated. “The underlying inflation accelerated in three consecutive fortnights of increases, with the merchandise category showing an incipient reversal,” he stressed.

He noted that price growth was the lowest in five years for the first half of January, due to the decline in the non-core index, particularly in fresh foods. “The decline in tourism-related services was due to seasonal effects, due to the end of the holiday period,” he said.

According to IGAE figures, the growth in economic activity in November 2024 was due to various factors, including a slight recovery in domestic consumption , driven by the holiday season.

However, some subsectors such as construction continue to present challenges, largely due to the completion of some flagship projects of the previous federal administration.

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported on Wednesday that in 2023, income from the supply of goods and services in wholesale trade totaled nine billion 713 million 574 thousand 966 pesos , which meant an annual increase of 4.8% .

According to the results of the Annual Trade Survey (EAC) , the agency also announced that 49% of said income corresponded to agricultural and forestry raw materials for the industry, and waste materials. This was followed by wholesale trade of groceries, food, beverages, ice and tobacco, with 24.2% , and the wholesale trade intermediation subsector, with 0.1 percent .

In its report, it indicated that the subsectors with the greatest growth were those specialized in machinery, equipment and furniture for agricultural, industrial, service and commercial activities, and other machinery and equipment for general use with 12.6% , as well as the intermediation sector with 21.2 percent .

Meanwhile, revenue from the supply of goods and services in retail trade totaled nine billion 277 million 724 thousand 904 pesos , which represented a growth of 7.8% compared to 2022.

The largest contribution to the sector’s revenues was made by the distribution of motor vehicles, spare parts, fuels and lubricants, with 30.5 percent. According to the survey, the subsectors with the greatest growth were trade exclusively through the Internet and printed catalogs, television and similar, and self-service and department stores.

In turn, the total employed personnel in wholesale trade was one million 714 thousand 651 people and in retail trade it was six million 213 thousand 516 .

Regarding fixed assets, he stressed that companies invested the most in real estate : 26.2% corresponded to wholesale trade and 52.8% to retail trade. The lowest investment item for both commercial sectors was computer equipment and peripherals, with shares of 4.2% and 6.1% , respectively.

These results come in the context of a 1.5 % year-on-year growth of the Mexican economy during the third quarter of 2024, which was driven by primary activities (agriculture, fishing and livestock), which in the period registered a 3.8% year-on-year increase, according to figures from Inegi.

At the 19th Annual Convention of the Mexican Institute of Foreign Trade Executives (IMECE) , Roberto Zapata , former Mexican ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and partner at Ansley Consultores Internacionales , considered that Mexico is in an unbeatable position to trigger nearshoring , due to its geographic location and, among other factors, the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) .

In this regard, he said that it must be understood that foreign trade is the most important dimension of the Mexican economy, so in view of the review of the T-MEC, which will take place in 2026, the negotiating team must defend what it has already won.

In addition, the country must open up to trade agreements with the European Union and seek other markets, as well as make progress on internal issues, such as infrastructure investment.

Zapata said that the review will be harsh, since the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump , threatened to impose tariffs of 25% on Mexico if it did not stop the flow of migrants, which is linked to issues that are not commercial.

In response, he suggested trying to approach Trump’s team before he takes office, in order to try to deactivate that measure.

At the roundtable discussion Mexico in the world capitalizing on opportunities , Julie Poirier , trade policy advisor at the Canadian Embassy in Mexico , highlighted the achievements over the past 30 years with trade collaboration and the USMCA, which has translated into an increase in trilateral trade .

Although he said there are opportunities for Mexico due to nearshoring , he pointed out that there are also challenges that are linked to the country’s current situation, as well as energy infrastructure, the lack of industrial spaces, water supply and reforms such as that of the Judiciary.

Canadian companies have a vision of sustainable development and are ready to invest more, especially in the mining sector, he said, adding that the review of the USMCA is an opportunity for this trade agreement to remain valid and useful , and will also allow Mexico to think more about Canada and vice versa.

For his part, Jorge Peydro Aznar , head of the economic and commercial section of the European Union delegation in Mexico , said that for European companies to invest in our country, various factors must be guaranteed , including, he said, the energy issue, which must come from renewable sources. Other challenges include providing legal certainty and strengthening the infrastructure on roads and airports, and combating insecurity.

He said that for Europe, Mexico is a land of opportunity, despite all the areas of opportunity that exist, since it continues to be a stable country.

In turn, Samanta Anguiano , general director of China Chamber Mexico , said that Chinese companies seek certainty in their investments , infrastructure , energy and talent training .

He explained that there are challenges with business culture and other factors such as time zones in that Asian country. He also stated that China will be an important issue in the review of the USMCA in 2026.

The government of Jalisco launched the Visor Logístico portal , a digital platform designed to consolidate the state as the main logistics hub in Mexico and Latin America, with the aim of facilitating trade and logistics at a national and international level , opening new opportunities for the economic growth.

Claudia Villarruel, director of Foreign Trade of the Secretariat of Economic Development of Jalisco (Sedeco) , highlighted that this platform arises as part of a strategic plan in this six-year term to make Jalisco visible in logistics matters.

“There was no registry of companies related to logistics at all levels, from the simplest things that citizens need to the most complex in terms of institutional commerce. This is how the outline of what this platform is came out, which in order to reach all corners not only of Jalisco but of Mexico, even abroad, had to be digital,” said Villarruel.

The portal offers a specialized directory of 3,924 companies that cover sectors such as storage, consulting, distribution and infrastructure. It also displays valuable content , such as business and commerce knowledge.

This platform, accessible free of charge to the public , seeks to enable all actors related to logistics to connect and grow in this ecosystem.

Claudia Villarruel, director of Foreign Trade Sedeco Jalisco

The director of Foreign Trade of Sedeco also stressed the importance of the participation of the private sector in the development of the platform.

“We did focus groups with approximately 400 companies, and we worked with them to upload the information to the directories,” said Villarruel.

He added that, although the platform was initially intended for Jalisco, the scope has naturally grown to include actors from other states, such as the port community of Manzanillo and Nuevo Laredo, key points for logistics and trade.

“One of the most outstanding aspects of Visor Logístico is its alignment with the needs of international trade, facilitating the relocation of foreign companies in Jalisco and in Mexico in general,” mentioned Villarruel.

The project had the support of the State Council of Science and Technology , private companies and academia and will soon include an English version , designed so that international actors can access clear and reliable information about the business ecosystem in Jalisco.

In an interview with T21, Villarruel concluded by highlighting the commitment to keeping the platform updated and free for all users. He assured that the arrival of the portal marks a crucial step on Jalisco’s path towards consolidating its position as a key player on the national and international logistics map, demonstrating that technology and collaboration are indispensable tools for economic development and success. in the global era.
