According to TIP Mexico, one of the main challenges for Mexican fleets operating to the United States is that compliance with NOMs does not guarantee legal circulation in US territory, so the units must also align with the requirements of the Department of Transportation (DOT) , the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Vehicle leasing is no longer just a financial tool, but an operational one. In an environment where liquidity and efficiency are more important than asset ownership, this model has gained ground as a strategy for companies, including freight carriers, according to TIP Mexico .

The scheme is not limited to light vehicles. TIP Mexico offers solutions for tractor-trailers, trailers and semi-trailers, as well as cars, vans and buses , thus expanding its reach within the business mobility sector.

Given this scenario, the company offers a guide to understand how vehicle leasing works and, above all, what to expect, and what not to expect, when contracting this type of service.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to understanding its scope:

It operates on a different logic: you don’t buy, you operate.
Leasing works under an operating expense (OpEx) scheme, which allows you to preserve capital, improve cash flow and maintain financial flexibility, explained TIP Mexico.

In practice, this means that the carrier pays for the use of the asset, not for its ownership.

What a leasing company does

The value of a leasing company is not limited to financing. According to TIP Mexico, its role can directly impact operations:

Optimizes resources: allows for more predictable financial planning.

It facilitates fleet renewal: especially towards cleaner technologies.

Manage the fleet: centralize procedures, maintenance, and telemetry.

It offers flexible schemes: adapted to the client’s operation.

At this point, support can be as important as unity itself.

What it doesn’t do (and is often confused with)

One of the most common mistakes is assuming that the leasing company controls the operation. This is not the case, TIP Mexico warned.

It does not manage routes or last mile: the strategy remains in the hands of the carrier.

It does not control the operators: operational performance is the responsibility of the client.

It does not assume legal responsibility for the use: regulatory compliance falls on the user.

It does not automatically absorb all costs: expenses such as ownership, maintenance or insurance depend on the user.

This is where the success or failure of the model is defined: in the clarity of responsibilities.

The key lies in shared responsibility.

Leasing does not replace the carrier’s management, it complements it.

While the leasing company guarantees the availability of the asset and operational support, the company must ensure its proper use and safekeeping, TIP Mexico indicated.

A model that is gaining ground

The sector’s growth supports this change. The fleet of leased vehicles grew 24.4% in the last annual cycle, reflecting a shift towards asset-based leasing models, according to data cited by TIP Mexico.

More than a financial solution, leasing is emerging as an operational tool. But its effectiveness depends not only on the leasing company, but also on how clearly the carrier understands where the service ends… and where their responsibility begins.

In the freight transport sector, financial pressure isn’t always reflected in fewer trips or idled vehicles, but rather in the difficulty of maintaining liquidity . According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) , only 13.7% of companies obtained bank financing in 2024, a situation that has led carriers to seek alternatives to traditional credit.

In this context, TIP Mexico is promoting the Sale & Leaseback scheme , a financial model that allows transportation companies to convert their assets into immediate liquidity without interrupting their operations. Under this scheme, companies sell their vehicles to TIP Mexico and immediately lease them back to continue using them in their daily activities, the firm announced in a press release.

This operation allows companies to receive immediate access to fresh capital, avoid increasing their debt levels, and maintain service continuity. Since it is not a bank loan, the scheme helps improve indicators such as liquidity and leverage without jeopardizing operations .

The model includes flexible contracts, either operating or finance leases , and integrates tax-deductible services such as maintenance, insurance, and satellite tracking. In this way, rent and services become deductible expenses, adding a tax component to the financial strategy.

The program is aimed at carriers and logistics operators with light and heavy cargo fleets who require capital to grow , renew units or face liquidity challenges in periods of high demand, without stopping operations.

TIP Mexico’s Sale & Leaseback scheme is complemented by services such as maintenance management, vehicle insurance, satellite tracking, legal assistance and the use of the MyTIP fleet management platform, integrating financial liquidity with operational efficiency.

In an environment where 56.2% of Mexican companies resort to alternative financing schemes, TIP Mexico positions itself as an ally for transportation and logistics, backed by its own infrastructure, national coverage and more than 30 years of experience in the sector.

SAN PEDRO GARZA GARCÍA, NL.- A small and medium-sized company (SME) does not struggle to grow in Mexico, but to survive. In the country there are just over four million economic units in this category, which are 99% of established companies and where seven out of 10 jobs are generated, according to official data.

Most new SMEs do not survive their third year of life due to the challenges of not having financing possibilities, but also due to incorrect management of their logistics activities , the lack of technological tools and infrastructure.

“It is more difficult for an SME to access international markets first because of its financial capacity and then its operational and productive capacity,” said Mauricio Medina, CEO of TIP Mexico , during his participation in ETYL 2024 , a Grupo T21 event, during the panel Logistics solutions for SMEs in the T-MEC .

He added that for the 25% of SMEs that do have access to credit, the financial costs in the country can lead to higher operating costs.

In the logistics field, companies such as Quintaesencia Logística have sought to support the SME segment with specialized services , given the knowledge that these are companies that may not be consistent in their shipments or when they need to transport their goods they are small in size.

“We realized that there were many companies that were not being served as they should be or as they demanded precisely because of their size,” said Adrián Hernández, general manager of Quintaesencia Logística, during the ETYL, who explained that in the last decade they have dedicated themselves to building networks with their transport providers such as trucking companies, maritime lines and railway companies in order to have spaces available for SMEs when they need them.

The services offered by Quintaesencia Logística also incorporate visibility and traceability of goods , since for SMEs having this often means surviving or disappearing, given that a large part of the assets that will provide liquidity to these companies once their goods are placed in the final markets can be transported in a container.

In these circumstances, logistics operators must develop operational involvement with SMEs, as well as provide flexibility, according to Adrián Hernández.

This same flexibility has led railroad companies like Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) to bring more SMEs onto the rail network, allowing them to take advantage of the connectivity it offers across all three North American countries.

“How can we bring rail to small and medium-sized businesses? The first thing is to have system capacity and we have a new service that is competing directly with trucks, it is called the MMX, which is a train that is going from San Luis Potosí to Chicago consistently in 3.8 days,” said David Eaton, commercial director of CPKC de México.

Finally, the specialists agreed that the incorporation of technology will facilitate the operations of SMEs, since they can count on reductions in storage costs, operational efficiency, inventory forecasts and improvements in production.

According to metrics from the World Resources Institute (WRI) , the transportation sector is responsible for 29% of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in Mexico. Considering that the country ranked ninth worldwide in GHG emissions in 2022, TIP Mexico implemented actions a couple of years ago to mitigate its carbon footprint .

To do this, it adopted ESG criteria and in the alliance with Transtex it managed to implement technology that contributes to making fuel consumption more efficient, which results in a reduction in polluting emissions.

To date, more than five thousand boxes owned by TIP (new and used) have Transtex equipment that favors aerodynamics. In seven years, due to the devices, 12,595 metric tons of CO2 have been stopped from being emitted, according to Valentín. González, director of New Business Development for Transtex in Latin America, in an interview with T21.

For his part, Edgar Aragón, Director of Marketing and PR for TIP México, indicated that the partnership with Transtex aims for its clients to adopt and be aware of the implications that freight transportation has on the generation of GHG.

“Beyond the fact that the equipment will be generating savings of 5% in fuel, what is important is the positive environmental impact, in this sense customers adopt it as a good practice ,” defined Aragón.

The representative of TIP Mexico announced that in the short term the company plans to implement the technology in a greater number of boxes, “surely in the future some colleagues from other companies in the industry will adopt the tool.”

Valentín González said that unlike the millions of dollars that original equipment manufacturers (OEM) allocate to perfecting the aerodynamics of vehicles, in the case of allied equipment this practice is not so recurring.

“The geometry of the dry box has remained the same for many years because the current design is the most practical for transporting as much merchandise as possible. In that sense, we seek to make the shape of the box more aerodynamic so that the engine can drag with ease. lower resistance, otherwise the investment in vehicle aerodynamics is detracted if the allied team generates an opposite effect. In this sense, improving the aerodynamics of the allied team allows the engines to have better performance,” said González.

Finally, Edgar Aragón stated that the company is aware of its role and contribution to the reduction of GHGs, which is why it is committed to adding initiatives, together with its clients, to mitigate emissions.
