In response to the need for companies in the connected operations market to be more efficient, but also to strengthen their activities in the field of property security and road safety, Samsara presented new products within the framework of Smart Operations Mexico 2024.

This is the first edition of this event that brings together current and potential Samsara clients. Julia Monroy, Samsara’s regional sales director in Mexico, described that by listening to the market, they identify the needs in four major areas: property security, road safety, efficiency and improving operations.

In this context, Samsara officially launched two innovations in its platform and two products: the asset tracker, the engine immobilizer 2.0, connected workflows and detection with artificial intelligence for its cameras.

These new features are designed to continue boosting the results achieved by Samsara, with more than 200 thousand accidents, 230 thousand digitalized workflows and 1.3 million tons of CO2 emissions emitted, this during just one year of ecosystem operation.

In the area of connected workflows , the launch of Samsara is aimed at reducing the use of paper, connecting the central office with field operations and that this translates into efficiency, but also into real-time security, as presented by Cristina Sánchez, Samsara’s Pre-Sales Engineering Manager.

Among the advantages of Connected Workflows are the ability to automatically assign forms, manage approvals and create tasks based on contextual information, enter geofences or detect accidents on roads.

Regarding innovations with artificial intelligence, they are based on three solutions: fatigue identification, lane change warnings and frontal collision alert, which, as explained by Rodrigo Papetti, Director of Product Management at Samsara, seek to reduce the imminent risks of collisions and accidents.

As for lane departure detection, these systems have been identified as being able to reduce accidents by up to 25% on their own, Papetti said.

Regarding fatigue, Samsara’s global director said that it is a risk factor that is even more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol. “The solution analyzes 17 inputs from a drowsy driver , which can include touching the face, closing the eyes, yawning, or head movements, among others.”

The Asset Tag is the first enterprise-grade asset tracker designed for tracking and managing high-value assets. “It is one of the smallest and most powerful devices in the industry,” said Cristina Sánchez. It can be used on assets with or without power.

“This team uses the Samsara network and takes advantage of all telematic terminals to be able to locate them. The more the network grows, the more coverage there is,” added Cristina Sánchez.

Meanwhile, the 2.0 engine immobilizer is a solution designed for the Mexican market, which responds to the security needs demanded by transporters. “There are various user interfaces, roles and permissions that can be applied in the Samsara Web Panel, to achieve a more secure solution,” Pepetti said.

Various solutions such as asset tracking, innovations in detection with artificial intelligence and connected workflows were presented last June at the Beyond Samsara event, held in Chicago.

Although at the end of 2023 and even in the first quarter of 2024 the State of Mexico was ranked as the entity with the highest number of robberies from motor transport, a change in the trend was anticipated as a result of the actions undertaken in the entity, and that could motivate Puebla to position itself as the state with the greatest problem.

At the close of the first half of the year and now in the third quarter results, Puebla remains with the highest incidence of crime in motor transport, with 27% of the national total, and even with an increase of eight percentage points compared to the same quarter of 2023, according to the quarterly report of Overhaul, a security and logistics intelligence firm.

Contrary to what was seen in Puebla, the State of Mexico contributed 19% of national participation at the end of 3Q24, which represents a contraction of nine points, since in the same period of 2023 it had reached 28 percent.

The rest of the top five entities with the highest number of robberies remained the same or increased slightly, as shown in the following graph.

“For security reasons, we had restricted circulation at night on the Amozoc – La Esperanza highway, but now it doesn’t matter if it’s 7 or 10 am, we have suffered robberies. No strategy is working, the worrying thing is that the intelligence of the authorities does not allow them to act in this area ,” shares with frustration and some resignation a transport entrepreneur who has suffered vehicle theft in the aforementioned region.

The Amozoc – La Esperanza route is almost a guarantee for transporters who travel on this highway that they will suffer robberies. According to Overhaul , a firm specializing in security and logistics, it was anticipated that since the beginning of 2024, Puebla would be the entity with the most robberies in the country, displacing the State of Mexico as the most affected.

In the cumulative period from January to September 2024, Puebla accounted for 31% of the robberies to motor transport, followed by the State of Mexico with 22% of the participation in the crimes.

And within Puebla, Overhaul identifies that precisely the Amozoc – La Esperanza section is the most dangerous and where the most incidents are recorded.

“After we were robbed, and it was not even 10 in the morning, our operator reported to us that on that day alone, eight units had already been stolen. What we are all wondering is why there is no reaction from the first tractor-trailer that was affected,” reiterates the same transporter when consulted.

A factor that not only this affected carrier, but also other carriers affected in the region, agree on is that the focus of the crime is the vehicles, even leaving loads on the roads.

“What draws our attention is that in a period of half an hour the tractor-trailers are taken to various workshops that are already in the region and the vehicles are stripped, but we cannot find them. The order is the parts,” said another transporter who has been affected in the Amozoc – La Esperanza area.

The frustration for transporters also lies in the fact that logistically there is no option to find alternative routes. “It is unaffordable to go around to the port of Veracruz via Xalapa, to later return to the junction to go to the southeast, whether it is called Coatzacoalcos or Mérida, it seems that criminal gangs also have a clear idea of this,” said one of the businessmen consulted.

This stretch of road has been highlighted in various forums and even by different organizations linked to transportation, so that federal and state authorities focus on solving the insecurity situation , however, the risk for this activity prevails.

In the days leading up to the national celebrations last September, the auto transport industry faced an increase in the theft of vehicles and merchandise. Contrary to this trend warned by Overhaul , the days after the Grito de Independencia had a more moderate accident rate.

In its report for last September, Overhaul announced that cargo theft in Mexico increased 6.8% compared to the previous month, August 2024, while in reference to September 2023 the increase was 4.6 percent.

The analysis and intelligence firm, Overhaul, highlighted that crimes against motor transport were evenly distributed throughout the weeks with peaks before the national holidays and the end of the month.

“Between September 14 and 16, when the national holidays were celebrated, cargo theft activity decreased considerably,” it stated in its monthly report, as can be seen in the following graph.

The central region remains the region with the highest incidence, concentrating 60% of the incidents, while the Bajío region contributed 20% during September.

By state, for the third consecutive month, Puebla remains in first place in accidents, contributing 31% of the total, while the State of Mexico contributed 22%, meaning that between the two, they contribute more than half of the criminal events.

Since the beginning of the year, Overhaul anticipated that due to the actions undertaken against crime in the State of Mexico, there was a risk that the gangs would move to other regions, and in that scenario Puebla was seen as an area of possible increase in its records.

Overhaul analyzed that 79% of the incidence was recorded between Tuesday and Friday , with Wednesday being the one that faced the greatest situation with 22%, in contrast to what happened on Saturdays and Sundays.

In the following graph, it can also be seen that the hours of greatest risk are at night, while the most affected configuration is tractor-trailers.

During September 2024, peaks were recorded between 05:00-10:00 hours (30%) and 18:00-22:00 hours (25%).

By type of merchandise, the Food & Beverage category (27%) remains the most affected, followed by Construction & Industrial (10%) , while Auto & Parts was in third place with nine percent.
