The Tehuantepec Isthmus Railroad (FIT) plans to transport cargo from Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and will carry out a pilot test to transport 600 cars from the largest South Korean automobile manufacturer.

“We are finalizing the contract to provide the service to Pemex. We have acquired 600 polyethylene hoppers. We already have a letter of intent that will begin producing it again in two months, so we made the investment to move three types, which will run along the line and which we will move to the interior of the country,” said Héctor Rubio Antonio, Deputy Director of Operations at FIT.

He said that this product is produced by the companies Braskem Idesa, located in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, and in the Pemex petrochemical complex La Cangrejera.

Regarding the movement of cars, he explained that the pilot test will be carried out next March for the first 600 cars that will arrive from Asia to Salina Cruz, to later take them to Coatzacoalcos and from there they will get on a ship to reach the east coast of the United States.

To this end, he explained that they have 33 automaxes and will add 250 more , as they expect to be moving finished vehicles by next June, “they will not be sold in Mexico but will be used for direct cargo, we are going to make interoceanic crossings.”

He mentioned that one of the great challenges of the FIT is that 10 percent of the total tons handled in the country by rail are moved.

He also estimated that the rehabilitation of Line K , which runs through the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas and has 472 kilometers of railway track, will be completed this year. This infrastructure includes the modernization of 526 bridges, 387 drainage works and 459 tracks, as well as the construction of three passenger stations.

He explained that the Navy is working on three fronts to complete this work, the first from Ixtepec to Arriaga, Arriaga to Mapastepec and Mapastepec to Ciudad Hidalgo.

“The physical progress of the works is almost 62% on roads, 43% on bridges, so the first rehabilitated section for cargo and passengers will be delivered by the middle of this year,” he said.

Currently, the FIT has 20 locomotives that can move up to seven thousand tons in a single train. “We want to have three-kilometer trains, carry as much cargo as possible, move it from Coatzacoalcos to Salina Cruz.”

There are also more than 10 locomotives to make movements in Coatzacoalcos, Matías Romero and Salina Cruz. They also have more than 1,300 cars, including 194 bulk hoppers that move up to 130 tons.

As well as 104 vans to transport 177 cubic meters that allow them to move palletized cargo, groceries and auto parts. 50 articulated modules for the movement of 20-foot and 40-foot containers, among other railway equipment.

“We want to create a great diversification for current and new clients, to move all their containerized cargo, bulk, agricultural, automotive, cement, oil and general cargo. And through the Asiponas Multi-Use Terminals and the Specialized Container Terminals, in 2025 we will move 150 thousand TEUs, but in less than 10 years we want to move 1000% and reach 1.4 million TEUs in 2036 without taking the rest of the cargo,” he said.

The Isthmus of Tehuantepec Railroad (FIT) transported two thousand tons of wheat grain , property of Viterra Mexico , imported from Canada, which demonstrates the importance of the interoceanic route and materializes the vocation of the model proposed for the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor (CIIT) , according to the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar).

The federal agency recalled that after six years, on November 15, the movement of cargo that arrived at the port of Salina Cruz on the ship “SSI PRUDENCE” on October 30 was restarted, where it was transferred to bulk hoppers owned by the FIT and transported to the warehouses of the company Trimex in the port of Coatzacoalcos through Line Z.

“This fact is the result of the work of port authorities and the FIT for the service of companies that have placed their trust in such an important project, which seeks to consolidate itself as a vital commercial route that offers an efficient and sustainable alternative for the transportation of cargo between both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, highlighting the competitive advantages in terms of less time and cost of transportation,” said Semar.

He said that Viterra Mexico is a company that connects producers and consumers to supply agricultural products , and has managed to establish a global agricultural network that covers 39 countries.

For its part, Grupo Trimex del Sureste is a Mexican company dedicated to producing, distributing and marketing products from the wheat industry, and with a broad presence in the production of wheat flour in the country.

The authorities of the Tehuantepec Isthmus Railway (FIT) plan to offer a double stowage service next year, which would allow it to mobilize up to 260 20-foot containers (TEU) for each train run.

Rear Admiral Alan Cruz Saba, general director of the FIT, explained that due to the orography and slopes of the region, the train’s movement capacity is 65 cars, which allows it to move 130 TEU.

“The perspective we have is the movement of double-stacked containers, cargo is already taking place, agricultural cargo, wheat, cement, cargo in general,” he said in a presentation during the monthly meeting of the Mexican Intermodal Transport Association. (AMTI) .

Carlos Barreda Westphal, director of the Ferroviaria.mx platform , explained that double stowage is in the transport of containerized cargo and depends on the existence of infrastructure and terminals to carry it out.

He recalled that previously the FIT could not provide this service due to the conditions of the road , “they were never kept in good condition, and there were also no volumes of cargo to drive it.”

Alan Cruz Saba said that, as part of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT) , they aim to implement a multimodal logistics platform that can enhance the growth and development of the country.

“This is not only a corridor, it is not only a train, it is not only about generating money but about supporting the economy, helping families in the region and with the implementation of the Development Poles (of Wellbeing) not only “We are going to ensure that the industry is there, but they are also going to have income because they are going to have to build schools and various services,” he explained.

The FIT is part of the CIIT presidential project with which the Mexican government has made available investments to adapt both the train tracks, as well as to develop new infrastructure around the seaports, as well as the dry ports or industrial parks that are being built. They have put out to tender to host companies from multiple sectors.

The CIIT, as its managers have specified, is not intended as a competition for the Panama Canal, but rather as an alternative interoceanic crossing (between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans) for goods.

The Ferrocarril del Istmo de Tehuantepec (FIT) reported that on June 30, it transported, for the first time, Grupo Maseca products from the port of Salina Cruz, in Oaxaca, to Chinameca, Veracruz.

The route was 269 kilometers with an estimated time of 10 hours. This operation consists of three trips on the railway’s Z Line, each with three locomotives and 45 new bulk hoppers, owned by the FIT, with a capacity of 100 tons of corn grain each.

“Together, a total of 13,500 tons of national white corn from producers in the state of Sinaloa will be transported. Said cargo arrived in Topolobampo, Sinaloa, aboard the Mar de Cortés ship, which arrived at the Administration of the National Port System (Asipona) of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, on June 24,” he said.

It should be noted that the first trip left on June 30 in the morning from Asipona Salina Cruz and arrived around 6:00 p.m. at the Chinameca bulk plant, Veracruz, owned by Grupo Maseca, which is operated and managed by the Company. Nacional Almacenadora (CONALSA), subsidiary company.

This operation, said the FIT, was carried out due to the rehabilitation of the railway track that already includes complete access of the train system to the Salina Cruz port area for its loading and unloading of products and the strengthening of the equipment. of the railway.

He highlighted the safety and punctuality in the handling of large volumes of merchandise through the availability of a scheduled service, added to the presence of the Secretary of the Navy, through the Mexican Navy.

“The return of cargo transport from the Isthmus Railway with the government tracks of Mexico, locomotives and hoppers of the FIT and the connection of the train in the port area, promotes the industrial and technological development of our country,” he assured.

The FIT is part of the priority project of the Government of Mexico, the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT) , which aims to implement a logistics platform interconnected by more than 1,200 kilometers of railways, and ports with a strategic location: Salina Cruz, Oaxaca; Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz; Puerto Chiapas, Chiapas and Dos Bocas, Tabasco.

In addition to the transportation services of the logistics platform, the Development Poles will be installed, which will be spaces for the attraction and installation of industries linked to the electrical and electronic industries, semiconductors, automotive, auto parts and transportation equipment, agribusiness, medical devices , pharmaceutical, petrochemical, among others.

“The signing of this agreement ensures the transportation of corn grains through recently acquired bulk hoppers, strengthening the FIT’s railway infrastructure,” he said.

The agency assured that this improvement in logistics will provide economical transportation, with capacity and improves production costs and consequently the economy of consumers.

With this, he stated that the FIT is positioned as the backbone of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT) and generates confidence in the business sector, in addition to promoting the development of the states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco.

It is worth remembering that during the current administration the modernization of Line Z of the FIT has been carried out, and since September 2023, cargo transportation between the ports of Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz was restarted.
