Last February, Super Transporte Internacional (STI) reached its first 33 years of operation, where all the knowledge of its founders, who have a little more experience in the motor transport industry, is imprinted.

And although this anniversary was achieved in a complex industry cycle, the experience of its management team and its collaborators, as well as the company’s fundamentals , have been key to overcoming a challenging 2025 , and remaining solid in the face of an uncertain 2026 , but one that promises a better scenario.

“2025 presented us with a scenario that no one could have predicted, and that impacted the international transit of goods, which is our main market. With tariffs, particularly on steel and aluminum, we were forced to be creative and agile in our response to reposition the team and seek organic growth with clients in other areas,” Ángel Hernández Gaytán, CEO of STI (number 13 in the Top 100 of Autotransport® ), told T21.

The executive noted that although STI has faced other critical moments throughout its history, such as the 2008-2009 subprime mortgage crisis in the United States, which had a global impact, or the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the company’s fundamentals were key to overcoming this period.

“We have a solid client portfolio that allows us to serve them effectively, but we have also built long-term relationships; with some of our clients we have been working for over 20 years . This also extends to our employees ; some have been with us almost since the company began and continue to be involved,” added Ángel Hernández, who joined STI in 2001.

In the context of the trade war, according to figures from the United States Department of Commerce , Mexico contributed 15.3% of the total trade of that country , consolidating itself as the main trading partner above Canada and well above China.

The border crossing remains the main point of entry between the two countries, totaling $353.94 billion in 2025, driven by a 7.7% increase in Mexican exports to the United States, which reached $227.11 billion. Conversely, exports from Mexico to the United States contracted by 1.11%, settling at $126.83 billion.

The positive trend has continued for the first two months, according to comments by Ángel Hernández, and according to STI’s operations in both periods, there is growth compared to the same cycle in 2025.

Given this market, which is expected to recover, some of STI’s strengths, as identified by its CEO, include financial discipline , which is currently a key asset. Since most of its revenue is in dollars, and the “super peso” (a reference to the strong peso) , this has an impact on its financial structure that must be managed with clients.

“It forces us to be close to our clients and make them aware of this reality of currency losses. We have been negotiating especially with those who operate spot routes ; with those whose routes we have contracted, it is more complex, but we are looking for ways to compensate. Ideally, we want to operate within the range of 20 pesos per dollar,” Hernández Gaytán explained.

Based on data from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) , the highest exchange rate in 2025 was 20.85 pesos per dollar , reached on March 6 of that year, and if compared against the level reached on March 9, 2026, the exchange rate difference is -15.2 percent .

This situation may have an impact on the search to modernize the fleet and keep it current, an effect that for STI was not so profound, since in 2024 they had made the pre-purchase of units considered to incorporate into the fleet in 2025.

In 2025, the company’s focus was on the trailer team , “which served the growth of our divisions, both specialized and dry van for international and local market movements, as well as to support the logistics divisions,” described Ángel Hernández.

In addition, a key aspect of STI’s strategy is the institutionalization of the company, where, although some management positions are held by family members, there is a professional rigor to ensure they remain in their positions.

This factor is fundamental to conveying certainty to customers and various stakeholders about the path the company will follow over time.

For more than two years, Expedited Specialized Logistics (ESL) has been moving step by step toward a goal: obtaining AEO (Authorized Economic Operator) accreditation .

It was a task that included audits, observations by the Tax Administration Service (SAT) , meetings between areas, compliance processes, and a constant effort to align the entire operation with the security and traceability standards required by international trade .

The result arrived this year and not only represents a technical validation , but also a strategic tool for the company’s growth.

“It was a long and complex process. From the moment we started until we obtained accreditation, it took two years,” Ángel Hernández , general director of STI México and ESL, explained to T21.

Although it was born as part of STI , a firm initially specialized in maritime and air logistics services , ESL has grown to establish itself as an operator with its own identity , Hernández commented.

In recent years, the company has added ground freight operations , including fifth-wheel units , and has its own customer base.

In that context, having OAS accreditation was more than a goal: it was an operational necessity .

“Many of our clients move merchandise to ports or abroad. For them, security in the logistics chain is a priority,” Hernández noted.

The AEO accreditation guarantees that the company complies with the legal and fiscal requirements imposed by the Mexican Customs Authority (SAT); it also facilitates benefits such as the use of FAST lanes (fast lanes in customs for reliable companies), recognition by other international customs authorities , and better opportunities with large corporations , he explained.

But the journey doesn’t end there. “This accreditation is an important step toward obtaining CTPAT (Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) certification ,” Ángel Hernández said.

With that goal in mind, ESL is seeking to further strengthen its position as a reliable operator with U.S. authorities , aiming to consolidate itself as a fast-paced company with international standards , the executive emphasized.

Looking ahead to the second half of 2025, ESL will focus on accelerating its growth , especially in its specialized cargo and dry van divisions , he explained.

Despite belonging to the STI Group, the company “maintains a conscious effort to operate with its own standards and ensure regulatory compliance , without compromising the reputation of the group to which it belongs,” Hernández emphasized.

The learning process has been cross-cutting. Everyone from the quality department to the traffic department was part of the process.

The history of this company is not measured in trucks, but in strategic decisions , resilience, and a true passion for service.

“We don’t want to be the biggest, we want to be the best.” That phrase isn’t an improvised slogan. It’s a motto Hernández learned in the halls of the company his family founded. And he doesn’t just repeat it: he lives it.

Founded in 1993, STI was born from the foresight of Ernesto Gaytán Palomo, who knew how to interpret the new commercial map and decided to establish the company as a public limited company.

Hernández formally joined the team in 2001, after having worked in various areas such as maintenance, administration, customer service, and sales. The company currently maintains a fleet of more than 500 units , but its trailer fleet has grown exponentially , especially in the last three years. It was also recognized at the T21 Group’s 2024 Transportation Awards and earned the Drive Is Great certification for its commitment to best practices and continuous improvement.

STI’s operations have historically been linked to specialized transport: open platforms, oversized trucks, and multi-axle modular vehicles , designed for complex loads requiring precision and terrain knowledge. “We don’t disappear when there are problems. We stay. We respond on weekends and holidays, when others don’t,” he said.

That attitude not only generated trust, but also opened doors with clients who hadn’t previously been on their radar.

Today, STI is part of a group that includes more than 13 companies between Mexico and the United States, and has more than 600 employees on the Mexican side alone.

Some measure their success in tons and kilometers traveled, but others, like STI, measure it in trust earned, trained operators, and well-made decisions. They don’t seek to be the biggest, they seek to be the best, and that, perhaps, is the most difficult path, but also the most solid.

Volvo Trucks introduced its new FH 540 model in Mexico , marking the restart of commercial operations for its range of cab-over trucks in the domestic market, according to a company press release.

The presentation of the units took place before customers and dealers, accompanied by the announcement of changes to the company’s management structure. Rafael Kisel, president of Volvo Group Mexico , emphasized that this stage marks the restart of the brand in the country , with a comprehensive offering of products, after-sales services, spare parts, and financing options.

Kisel added that the new units comply with the Euro 6 standard, which helps promote “the migration to cleaner transportation solutions.”

He noted that the brand’s new phase in the country involves a relaunch focused on meeting the demand for cab-over trucks, and that there are currently 190,000 units of this type of Volvo in Latin America. He added that Mexico, being one of the top 10 freight transportation markets worldwide, could see 20% growth in this segment.

Along the same lines, the company reported that there are currently more than 12,000 units of the brand’s vehicles in circulation in Mexico , which are serviced by its dealer network.

From a regional perspective, Wilson Lirmann, president of Volvo Trucks Latin America, highlighted the strategic importance of the Mexican market for the brand’s expansion. “We are actually beginning the sale of flatbed trucks in a strategic market,” he said.

Lirmann added that the firm already has a consolidated presence in other countries in the region , with a 24% market share in Brazil and Peru, and accelerated growth in Chile, where they have already reached second place. In all cases, he emphasized that the company’s focus is on “putting the customer at the center of everything we do.”

“We know that Latin American transporters are very demanding, and we’re sure it’s no different in Mexico. You demand the best solutions in terms of products and services,” said Lirman.

With the aim of offering closer and more specialized attention to the auto transport sector , the agent and insurance specialist, Marco Fernández , inaugurated his new office on January 22 in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, one of the main logistics areas of the country.

Fernández, who has more than 22 years of experience in the insurance sector, told T21 that one of his goals is for transportation companies to see the insurance agent as a strategic partner , as someone who cares about their safety and long-term profitability .

Its approach seeks to go beyond reactive attention, to prioritize accident prevention and road culture .

“We always associate insurance with the reactive part, when an accident has already occurred. But what we want to do is transform the way in which transport companies approach insurance, promoting prevention and reducing losses,” explained Fernández.

The decision to open an office in Nuevo Laredo responds to the need to strengthen its relationship with the region’s transporters and offer a more agile and personalized service. The new headquarters is located in the Nuevo Laredo Cargo Services Center (CenSeCar) , a strategic point for the sector.

Challenges and trends in the insurance sector

Fernández pointed out that one of the main challenges in the industry is the need for awareness not only among drivers, but in all administrative and operational areas of transport companies.

“It is easy to blame the operator for an accident, but many times there are previous warnings that could have prevented the incident. From monitoring to maintenance, all areas have responsibility,” he stressed.

Fernández stressed that the insecurity in cargo transport has generated an increase in accidents , which has reduced the number of insurers willing to operate in the sector.

“A few years ago you could present eight or 10 insurers, today they must be counted, and some with proposals with very high costs,” explained Fernández.

Among the specialized services that Marco Fernández provides in his offices, both in Mexico City and Nuevo Laredo, are:

1. Fleet and heavy equipment insurance: Working exclusively with Quálitas , it provides coverage from the notification of the incident until the vehicle is back in circulation. It also offers prevention, awareness and road safety services at no additional cost to its clients.
2. Crossborder insurance : Aimed at the transportation of goods exclusively destined for the states of California, Texas and Arizona in the United States .

El cargo Cargo transportation insurance! Marco Fernandez opens office in Nuevo Laredo apareció primero en T21.

The countdown began on February 3 with the one-month postponement of the imposition of US tariffs on Mexican products , which allowed exporters a temporary respite.

For Ángel Hernández, general manager of Super Transporte Internacional (STI) , the pressure on the sector has been on since January of this year, the demand for more transport and storage space to be able to move goods in the face of uncertainty over tariffs.

“We already noticed that exporters were beginning to want to send a little more product to the American side to avoid the risk of an increase due to sales. This was seen much more in January, because February was a strong threat,” explained Hernández.

With the postponement, the strategy continues to evolve. For Hernandez, there is still some uncertainty and the market could demand much more capacity in the export area to cover any risk.

“These issues are very sensitive, especially because it is a fact that if there is something that Donald Trump does not like, he will want to impose tariffs,” Hernández said.

He also said that exporters have sought to secure their operating margins.

Hernández warned that “there is already a lack of capacity in the warehouses in Laredo, and that is a reality. There is a lack of creativity because it is a reality. The issue of capacity could be affected.”

He also indicated that in Laredo many areas are still being developed for storage, but not everything is ready .

For his part, Edgar Zamorano, delegate of the  National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) in Reynosa, explained that there are still doubts in the sector.

“Saturday (February 1) filled us with anguish. We spoke all day with customs agents, exporters, merchandise owners, warehouses, land transport, everyone was on the same page of uncertainty,” Zamorano said.

He said that a scenario with tariffs would represent a “fall in numbers, no one would want to export or import ,” he explained.

She explained how tensions had grown in the days leading up to the meeting. “President Trump’s position was very tough, but President Claudia’s response was also very tough,” she said.

For Zamorano, trade cannot operate with constant pauses . “Trump is not someone you can easily convince not to continue with tariffs. Much depends on what Mexico does to avoid it,” he said.

Along the same lines, Javier Abascal, CEO of Grupo Zonte , considered that Trump’s move follows a pattern. “Knowing Trump, knowing what he is like, I think he will just threaten. His scheme is that: threaten, go out and say things to the press and make everyone nervous,” Abascal commented.

In the midst of this scenario, transporters and logistics operators are trying to sustain the flow of trade before uncertainty becomes a definitive blow.

In this context and in light of the 30-day pause in tariffs, logistics specialists warn that the situation remains volatile and due to demand they have reinforced the offer of their services , such was the case of Pegasus Logistics Group , who in a statement noted that “despite the postponement, the situation remains unstable and companies must remain vigilant.”

For its part, Averitt , a cross-border solutions provider, highlighted the importance of strengthening supply chains through strategic storage by offering inventory relocation.

In light of this, some companies have already begun to explore storage options at strategic locations within the United States to ensure the continuity of their operations.

The question in the sector is clear: will this be just a temporary respite before a new onslaught or the prelude to a definitive agreement? The countdown to find out continues until March of this year.

El cargo Battle for storage? Exporters get ahead of tariffs apareció primero en T21.

In the cumulative period from January to September of this year, trade between Mexico and the United States that was operated through the Laredo border port accumulated 254.4 billion dollars (mdd) , an increase of 5.74% compared to the same cycle in 2023, according to the United States Department of Commerce .

The commercial dynamics between Mexico and the United States motivate a logistical dynamic in Laredo that is not only manifested in the movement of transport units, but also in storage capacity.

Aware that infrastructure is key to serving a demanding market, Super Transporte Internacional (STI) maintains the dynamic of renewing its fleet of tractor trucks to maintain an average age of four years and even reduce it.

To end the year with this dynamic, STI will receive from now until the rest of the year a total of 30 Kenworth T680 and T880 tractor trucks to renew the fleet of its two market divisions: specialized cargo and dry vans.

Based on information obtained from STI, Kenworth del Río Bravo made the symbolic delivery of the first 30 units that will be integrated into the STI fleet, and which are aimed at renewing the vehicle fleet.

“The units are intended to renew the fleet that we are bringing out, both for the dry box division and for the specialized one,” said Ángel Hernández, general manager of STI. With these deliveries, the color of the tractor-trailers will be defined according to their applications, “the white ones will be to identify the dry box operation, while the black ones will be for our specialized division.”

Given the configuration of STI’s operations, 60% of them are focused on the specialized transport division , while the remaining 40% is concentrated on dry box operations, in all cases with a presence in the commercial exchange between Mexico and the United States.

Recently, STI integrated 10 International LT tractor trucks , which are focused on the growth of the specialized division.

As part of the delivery of the Kenworth tractor-trailer fleet, the occasion was taken to unveil the commemorative plaque in honor of Felipe Gaytán Palomo, founder of STI, who passed away last June. As part of the recognitions made, the plaque is located on the classic 1971 Kenworth tractor-trailer, the date that coincides with Felipe Gaytán’s birth.

Once again, national roads are blocked to demonstrate for social conflicts, affecting the operation of national auto transport. Faced with this situation, the National Chamber of Cargo Auto Transport (Canacar) through its president, Miguel Ángel Martínez Millán, sent a letter addressed to the Secretary of the Interior, Luisa María Alcalde Luján, requesting her intervention so that the blockade that ejidatarios have maintained active for more than 48 hours at km 146 of the northern bypass of Mexico City, Pachuca-Tulancingo section, better known as Arco Norte, is attended to as soon as possible.

“It is unsustainable for citizens and for freight transport to remain in suspense and in constant uncertainty due to the recurring closure actions carried out by these local groups. We call on Canacar to find a definitive and in the best terms a solution to the problem and to comply with the rule of law for all Mexicans in strict adherence to the law and human rights of all people involved, as well as those affected by unilateral actions that do not contribute to the growth and development of Mexico,” said Martínez Millán.

In the document that was received by the Directorate of Control Management of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) and by the Official Parts Office, the representative of the transporters stated that the prompt release of the communication routes is essential to avoid a repeat of what happened a few weeks ago.

“Since the operators are in inappropriate conditions, being stranded in the middle of the road and not having access to food, spaces to meet their basic needs and rest, in addition to opening up the possibility of being victims of crimes ,” reads the message.

It should be noted that this situation was exposed in the Grupo T21 report of August 2024, where it was stated that despite the fact that obstructing communication routes is considered a federal crime in Mexico, punishable by penalties ranging from one to five years in prison and 100 to 10 thousand days of fines, according to Article 167 of the Federal Penal Code, the taking of roads and toll booths as a form of pressure against the authorities is increasingly frequent, affecting not only those involved, but also the thousands of road users who are stranded to their fate for hours, even days.

At the time, Ángel Hernández Gaytán, general director of STI , explained that these actions cause disruptions and chaos in terms of mobility. “Specifically for the trucking companies, the repercussions range from delays in delivery times, route deviations or reconfiguration in the operational planning of a route, which causes an increase in operating costs, greater mileage in the units and, therefore, loss of productivity.
