Amid an economic outlook slowed by US tariff policy, the Mexican mining and metallurgical industry remained resilient and grew its production by 1.4% month-on-month in September 2025 , the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) announced on Wednesday  .

In its annual measurement, production registered a positive variation of  2% , according to the Mining and Metallurgical Industry Statistics (EIMM) , which provides information on activity in this area in order to generate timely indicators.

In the ninth month of the year, already at an annual rate, sulfur  had an increase in its production of 66.1%;  gold  was another of the metals with a significant growth of 12.5 percent.

During the period,  lead, silver, gypsum, zinc, non-coking coal  – which is used for the generation of electricity – and fluorite , registered increases of 9.4%, 4.9%, 3.4%, 2.2%, 2.2% and 2.1%, respectively.

Meanwhile, the largest declines in mining and metallurgical production during the cycle were in  copper and iron pellets , with 4.7% and 17.9%, respectively, at an annual rate.

By federal entities, Zacatecas  stood out in gold production with an annual variation of 16.4%, as well as in silver with 4.1%, lead with 1.4% and zinc with 3.3 percent.

Colima stood out in iron production with 3.3%, Nuevo León in sulfur with 11.3% and San Luis Potosí in fluorite with 3.1% in the cycle, indicated Inegi.

Mexico seeks to revive its large-scale mining industry to reposition itself in global competition, in order to manufacture batteries, semiconductors, and other products.

In that regard, the federal government recently announced a plan to expedite permits and attract capital, seeking to reduce processing times, unify criteria, and modernize processes so that Mexico can once again become competitive in this industry.

According to estimates from the Mexican Mining Chamber (Camimex) , mining investments in the country could reach 5.308 billion dollars in 2025, an amount 4.8% higher compared to 2024.

According to Inegi, Mexican mining and metallurgical production includes activities of extraction, processing, smelting and refining of metallic and non-metallic minerals.

According to the agency’s figures, this would be the third month in 2025 with negative production numbers in this sector.

According to the  Mining and Metallurgical Industry Statistics (EIMM) , which provides information on mining and metallurgical activity in order to generate timely indicators, annual production registered a variation of 4.2 percent . In the third month of the year, and annual rate,  zinc  saw an increase in its production of 35.7%, and lead with 18.5% also showed an increase in said period.  Fluorite registered an increase of 7.4%, as did gold and copper , with advances of 2.7% and 2.6%, respectively.

Meanwhile, the largest declines in mining and metallurgical production during the period were in sulfur (22.1%), silver (2.3%), and non-coking coal —used for electricity generation—with an annual decline of 1.4%.

By state, Zacatecas stood out in gold production, with an annual increase of 2.9%, as well as in zinc (4.8%) and copper (2.4%).

Meanwhile, San Luis Potosí stood out in silver production with an annual variation of 15.1 percent, and Durango in lead with 5.9 percent.

The Mexican mining and metallurgical industry is in the crosshairs of US President Donald Trump , specifically for products such as steel and aluminum, which have been hit with a 25% tariff, and this sector is already feeling the brunt of the tax.

In response, the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO)  warned that the implementation of this measure will affect  4.7%  of total Mexican exports.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , Mexico’s mining and metallurgical production, which includes extraction, processing, smelting and refining of metallic and non-metallic minerals, stood at  71.2 points in February 2025 , representing a   monthly decrease of 4.6% .

According to the  Statistics of the Mining and Metallurgical Industry (EIMM) , production increased by  3.6 percent at an annual rate .

By product, zinc production increased  15.1% year-on-year in the second month of the year ; silver also saw an increase of 11.9% during the same period. Iron pellets and lead saw increases in production, by  9.3% and 7%, respectively.

In contrast, gypsum production fell by 0.5% during the period , as did  fluorite , which fell by 0.7% . Other products and minerals that saw annual declines were  copper, which fell by 3.6% , gold, which fell by 4.9% , and sulfur , which fell by 16.3% .

During this period, Zacatecas stood out in gold production with an annual variation of 35.3%, as well as in silver with 42.2%, lead with 15.3%, and zinc with 61.7%, detailed the INEGI.

According to the agency’s figures, this would be the second month in 2025 with negative production figures for this sector, as last January also saw a 10.2% monthly decline.

The Mexican mining industry has been one of the industries most affected by the United States’ tariff policy, following the 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports from the United States that went into effect on March 12.

In response, the  Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO)  warned that the implementation of this measure would affect  4.7% of total Mexican exports and would also impact the value of imports by the United States from Mexico, estimated at more than  $22.5 billion , with severe consequences for the national automotive industry.
