Automation has ceased to be a futuristic promise and has become a central component of Walmart Mexico and Central America’s logistics strategy. The company announced the integration of robotic technology at its Megapark in Tepotzotlán, State of Mexico, a move aimed at accelerating e-commerce order fulfillment , improving operational accuracy, and strengthening a logistics network that already distributes millions of items nationwide .

The stakes are high. The technological solution installed at the e-commerce-focused distribution center involved an investment of over 400 million pesos (MXN) and will quadruple order fulfillment productivity, at a time when the growth of e-commerce is increasingly putting pressure on supply chains to respond with speed and accuracy.

“What we are inaugurating here today is much more than new technology. It is a new way to grow, to collaborate, to better serve Mexico,” said Gastón Wainstein, Senior Vice President of Supply Chain and Real Estate for Walmart Mexico and Central America, during the event held at the logistics complex in the State of Mexico.

The executive explained that the operation incorporates “goods-to-person” and “pick-to-person” systems , whereby robots transport products directly to associates, avoiding long journeys within the warehouse and concentrating tasks at consolidation and dispatch stations. “This allows us to prepare many more orders faster, more safely, and with complete accuracy, combining the best of automation with the talent of our people,” he stated.

The automation of the Megapark is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Walmart’s logistics infrastructure in Mexico, supported by a network comprised of three Fulfillment Centers located in the State of Mexico (Tepotzotlán), Guadalajara, and Monterrey, in addition to five omnichannel distribution centers in Mexicali, Chihuahua, Culiacán, Villahermosa, and Mérida. These facilities not only process e-commerce orders but also supply physical stores in their respective regions . Furthermore, 61 Last Mile Hubs are responsible for connecting merchandise with the end consumer daily.

From Tepotzotlán, along with its fulfillment centers and omnichannel network, the company distributes millions of items to e-commerce customers throughout Mexico. In the State of Mexico alone, Walmart operates distribution centers in Cuautitlán, Chalco, San Martín Obispo, Santa Bárbara, and its own Megapark, in addition to more than 460 stores.

Cristian Barrientos, CEO and president of Walmart Mexico and Central America, stated that this logistical transformation responds to the need to more intelligently connect the company’s physical, technological, and human network . “The automation here at the Megapark e-commerce distribution center is precisely that connection made real. It marks a turning point in how we supply and deliver to our millions of customers,” he noted

The executive noted that Walmart has more than 3,300 stores in over 600 cities across the country and more than 200,000 associates in Mexico, a structure that is now seeking to enhance itself with technology to support the growth of e-commerce. In this context, he highlighted that the company announced investments of 43 billion pesos in Mexico and Central America this year, directed towards infrastructure, new stores, supply chain, and technology.

Part of that investment will be concentrated in the State of Mexico. Barrientos announced that Walmart will invest more than four billion pesos in the state during the 2026-2027 period , where it currently employs approximately 33,000 associates. More than two thousand people work at the Megapark e-commerce distribution center alone .

The logistical importance of the State of Mexico was also underscored by state authorities. Laura González, the state’s Secretary of Economic Development, described the project as “a materialized investment that transforms the way e-commerce operates in our country,” while also defending the state’s position as “the logistical heart of the country . “

The official highlighted that the logistics sector in the State of Mexico grew 12.8% annually during 2024, exceeding the national average, and that it comprises 2,945 logistics-related businesses and more than 716,000 jobs. “We not only participate in national logistics, but we lead its expansion,” she stated.

Similarly, Horacio Duarte Olivares, Secretary General of the Government of the State of Mexico, affirmed that every investment in logistics infrastructure represents greater job opportunities and economic dynamism for the state . “Thank you very much for trusting in the State of Mexico and making it possible for our economy to grow,” he expressed.

Beyond automation, Walmart made it clear that the goal is to build a scalable operation to support the growth of e-commerce in Mexico. “Today, this opening marks the transition from traditional logistics to automated and robotic logistics ,” Wainstein summarized. “I think I’m not mistaken in saying that there is no other operation with this level of automation in the country.”

Faced with this situation, coordination between authorities and the private sector has become the cornerstone of efforts to contain the problem.

From the state delegation of the National Chamber of Freight Transportation (Canacar) , the work is coordinated through monthly inter-institutional meetings where the National Guard , state authorities, C-5 centers, as well as representatives of the transportation sector participate.

The timely monitoring of incidents and the exchange of operational information are part of these meetings, which also seek to resolve one of the main obstacles: the fragmentation between federal and local levels, which often dilutes responsibilities in addressing crimes.

“We often find that if it’s a federal section, or if it’s a local section, then we seek that cooperation,” explained Paulina Montserrat Muñoz, delegate of Canacar in the State of Mexico.

In this context, strengthening institutional communication and ensuring the continuity of these spaces are emerging as key elements for advancing the security strategy. The close relationship with the authorities, he affirmed, is the result of sustained work over the years, not isolated actions.

At the same time, the organization is working on developing a more precise diagnosis of crime hotspots in the state. To this end, it is preparing a data collection effort that will be presented to the authorities , based on records from Canacar’s national call center .

“We are preparing the information through the call center and once we have it, the authorities told us: ‘present what you have and we will work with that’,” Muñoz explained.

This approach becomes more relevant when considering the geographical concentration of crime.

According to information from Overhaul , 68% of the incidence of cargo theft of food and beverages is concentrated in the central (37%) and Bajío (31%) regions, while 65% of these events are registered in six entities, including the State of Mexico, which concentrates the largest number of cases with 18 percent .

At the highway level, incidents are concentrated on strategic corridors such as the Mexico City–Saltillo highway (MEX-57D) with 14% of the events, followed by the Mexico City–Veracruz highway (MEX-150D) and the Guadalajara–San Luis Potosí highway (MEX-80D), both with 5%. Furthermore, the main target of criminals is heavy vehicles, particularly tractor-trailers (58%), box trucks (18%), and cargo vans (16%).

Thus, in an environment where crime rates remain high in key areas , the sector’s strategy involves not only reinforcing operational presence, but also consolidating effective coordination that allows information to be translated into concrete actions in the field.

Monitoring doesn’t begin when an alarm sounds. It starts much earlier, with risk analysis, understanding the territory, and the seamless coordination between technology and law enforcement . In a country where cargo theft remains a major strain on logistics chains, companies like Skyangel have transformed prevention and immediate response into a highly specialized operation.

That was the context in which Skyangel, a firm dedicated to the management of company risk, gave recognition to the Specialized Directorate for Transportation Theft of the State of Mexico , by opening its doors to this corporation in a meeting that went beyond an institutional visit.

The visit was conducted with the participation of Martín Domínguez Reséndiz , Director General of Combating Vehicle and Transportation Theft in the State of Mexico, accompanied by members of his operational team, who toured the facilities and learned about the monitoring and risk analysis processes.

In that context, Skyangel also presented an award to the Undersecretary of Security of the State of Mexico, Carlos Alberto Hernández , as part of the institutional coordination that is maintained for the attention to events of robbery of transport and the operational response.

The activity highlighted how public-private collaboration has become a key element in containing a crime that concentrates much of its impact in that entity.

“A large part of cargo theft in the country occurs in the State of Mexico, due to the confluence of highways and because it is the arrival point for merchandise that supplies the metropolitan area,” explained Rubén Almonte, CEO of Skyangel, detailing why the company decided to recognize the work of this specialized area of the state police.

When the alert is real, the response is immediate

From Skyangel’s perspective, the relationship with the authorities is not merely decorative. It is built on operational trust. Almonte emphasized that the company’s reports are taken seriously because they adhere to clear protocols and undergo prior validation of the events.

“When we request support, it’s because there has already been a deviation from the original route, unauthorized stops, or a loss of communication with the operator,” he noted. This certainty allows for an immediate and coordinated response in the event of a risk.

Their accumulated experience has also allowed them to identify risks that are not always linked to a direct assault. A mechanical breakdown on the road, for example, can turn a stopped vehicle into a target for looting or pillaging, making constant point-to-point monitoring crucial .

The results of this collaboration are beginning to be reflected in the indicators. According to Almonte, the joint work with the Specialized Directorate for Cargo Theft has contributed to a 17% reduction in incidents compared to the previous year , a figure that represents a significant impact on both losses and merchandise recovery.

“This allows us to reduce the victimization of companies and recover cargo when it is stolen,” he explained, justifying the importance of publicly recognizing the work of the authorities involved.

Two decades after its founding, Skyangel has evolved from a company focused solely on location services. Today, it defines itself as a comprehensive security ecosystem , with solutions ranging from ground transportation and containerized cargo to last-mile delivery, fixed installations, and personal protection.

“We protect containers, provide visibility to shipping operations, offer virtual last-mile custody, and also monitor restaurants, cafes, executives, and homes,” Almonte explained, describing the company’s evolution and its service portfolio.

Skyangel has a presence in the United States, Mexico, and five Central American countries , and from its monitoring centers in the country, it tracks cargo traveling across different continents. More than 3,900 corporate clients support this model, according to data shared by the executive.

Skyangel’s technological operation relies on the use of temperature, humidity, impact, and tamper sensors to track sensitive cargo throughout its journey. The collected data allows for the identification of route deviations, unauthorized openings, or potential damage to the merchandise during transit .

This data is processed using analytics tools, resulting in dashboards that clients use to support claims, adjust routes, and reinforce operational protocols. In this analysis, the stopped unit repeatedly appears as one of the main risk points, so prevention focuses on timely alerts and alternative traffic flow plans.

A “private 911” for businesses and individuals

Skyangel’s response logic also extends to protecting the human element. From panic buttons in mobile apps to platforms that integrate real-time video, audio, and location, the company operates as a private , 24/7 emergency response center .

Shootings, accidents, fires, medical emergencies, and cases of gender-based violence are among the scenarios they handle under specific protocols, with trained personnel and direct coordination with local authorities. “The number one priority is safeguarding people’s well-being,” the monitoring center emphasizes.

Looking ahead, Rubén Almonte acknowledged that the biggest challenge for the sector is not technological, but structural. In a complex environment, where authorities are overwhelmed and investment in security continues to grow, the risk is that companies will lose competitiveness.

“The challenge is for victimized companies to continue investing in security without that ending up affecting the promise of delivery, production or Mexico’s competitiveness on the international stage,” he warned.

Added to this is a challenging economic context, with sectors that have seen their cargo volumes fall between 15% and 20%, impacts on the automotive industry and logistics increasingly pressured by external factors.

In this scenario, the company’s strategy is to use technology, real-time data, and collaboration with the authorities as an essential triad to reduce risks, protect cargo, and sustain logistics operations in one of the most complex environments in the country.

The Secretary of Economic Development of the State of Mexico, Laura González Hernández, highlighted the growth and logistics infrastructure of the state , emphasizing the advantages it offers for the automotive industry and its supply chains, highlighting among them the tax incentives .

In this regard, the official also stressed that, thanks to its strategic location and investment in infrastructure, the State of Mexico becomes a key logistics hub for the country , attracting companies from various sectors seeking to optimize costs and distribution times.

He mentioned tax incentives focused mainly on payroll tax and green taxes for companies that move operations, increase their workforce or start operations in the State of Mexico.

These incentives offer a 100% exemption on these taxes for 12 months . In addition, the possibility of extending these benefits in the following fiscal year is being considered.

He explained that with nine automotive plants and an ecosystem of more than 150 companies supplying the industry, the State of Mexico is one of the main vehicle manufacturers in the country, producing everything from cars and SUVs to tractor-trailers and buses. In addition, it houses design and engineering centers for well-known brands such as Ford and Nissan , consolidating itself as a hub for automotive innovation.

González also spoke about the progress of the creation of development hubs , such as the one planned in the Felipe Ángeles International Airport region , in conjunction with the states of Hidalgo and Mexico City. This development will focus on strategic sectors and will have federal and municipal tax incentives to attract large companies.

“The State of Mexico has a unique position that offers a combination of infrastructure, resources and talent that few states can match. We are committed to creating a favorable environment for companies to find a space to grow here,” explained González.

The head of the Secretariat of Economic Development also highlighted that the State of Mexico has more than 16 thousand kilometers (km) of road network and 743 km of freight railways , in addition to three customs offices and two international airports: the Toluca International Airport and the Felipe Ángeles International Airport, currently the largest cargo airport in the country, which makes it attractive for investment.

“The location of the State of Mexico gives us advantages that are not found in other regions of the country, allowing us to optimize the transfer of goods, both to the northern border and to the seaports,” said González.

Additionally, to reinforce this strategic position, the secretary mentioned that the state is working on the availability of energy resources , road infrastructure and access to natural gas, key elements to attract investors seeking to establish distribution centers and logistics plants.

He noted that the state has 219 industrial parks and is a leader in this area, providing the necessary support to facilitate the expansion of the automotive industry and other manufacturing.

The State of Mexico is also the entity with the highest number of employed people in Mexico, with 8.2 million inhabitants employed in various sectors.

“The State of Mexico has the capacity to train highly specialized labor to meet the demand of the automotive industry and other strategic areas,” said González.

He also stated that the state produces technical and professional graduates every year in areas such as engineering, manufacturing, information technology and business administration. He assured that this human resource is essential to support the more than 2,700 logistics companies that operate in the state .

According to Gozález and in line with global trends, the State of Mexico seeks to consolidate itself as a center for the development of advanced technologies, semiconductors and alternative energy.

He mentioned that the state is committed to the care of natural resources, ensuring the availability of water and promoting sustainable practices for industries seeking to establish themselves in the region.

“The State of Mexico has optimal conditions to host alternative energy projects and data centers, which will strengthen our economy and attract investment from top-level technology companies,” González said.

The official made these statements within the framework of the 10th edition of Automotive Logistics & Supply Chain Mexico , where she highlighted the commitment to electromobility and the semiconductor industry, sectors that, in collaboration with the federal government and the private sector, seek to position the State of Mexico as a leader in innovation and technology.

Although at the end of 2023 and even in the first quarter of 2024 the State of Mexico was ranked as the entity with the highest number of robberies from motor transport, a change in the trend was anticipated as a result of the actions undertaken in the entity, and that could motivate Puebla to position itself as the state with the greatest problem.

At the close of the first half of the year and now in the third quarter results, Puebla remains with the highest incidence of crime in motor transport, with 27% of the national total, and even with an increase of eight percentage points compared to the same quarter of 2023, according to the quarterly report of Overhaul, a security and logistics intelligence firm.

Contrary to what was seen in Puebla, the State of Mexico contributed 19% of national participation at the end of 3Q24, which represents a contraction of nine points, since in the same period of 2023 it had reached 28 percent.

The rest of the top five entities with the highest number of robberies remained the same or increased slightly, as shown in the following graph.

In the days leading up to the national celebrations last September, the auto transport industry faced an increase in the theft of vehicles and merchandise. Contrary to this trend warned by Overhaul , the days after the Grito de Independencia had a more moderate accident rate.

In its report for last September, Overhaul announced that cargo theft in Mexico increased 6.8% compared to the previous month, August 2024, while in reference to September 2023 the increase was 4.6 percent.

The analysis and intelligence firm, Overhaul, highlighted that crimes against motor transport were evenly distributed throughout the weeks with peaks before the national holidays and the end of the month.

“Between September 14 and 16, when the national holidays were celebrated, cargo theft activity decreased considerably,” it stated in its monthly report, as can be seen in the following graph.

The central region remains the region with the highest incidence, concentrating 60% of the incidents, while the Bajío region contributed 20% during September.

By state, for the third consecutive month, Puebla remains in first place in accidents, contributing 31% of the total, while the State of Mexico contributed 22%, meaning that between the two, they contribute more than half of the criminal events.

Since the beginning of the year, Overhaul anticipated that due to the actions undertaken against crime in the State of Mexico, there was a risk that the gangs would move to other regions, and in that scenario Puebla was seen as an area of possible increase in its records.

As predicted by specialists, Puebla emerged as the state with the highest number of robberies targeting freight transport in 2024.

By the end of May of the current year, Puebla surpassed Estado de México in the theft of cargo vehicles, with 175 heavy units stolen in the first five months of 2024. Specifically, Puebla reported one more theft than Estado de México, which totaled 174 incidents, according to the National Association of Vehicle Tracking and Security Companies (ANERPV).

Comparing the figures between May and April 2024, Puebla saw an increase of 44 stolen units, while Estado de México had 36 heavy vehicles stolen.

David Román, president of ANERPV, stated that robbery rates have sharply increased in Puebla, a state struggling to control the crime. “It’s approaching the levels seen in Estado de México, which is highly unusual because Puebla lacks the economic power and population of Estado de México,” he affirmed.

According to the monthly report published by ANERPV, from January to May, there have been a total of 1,410 vehicle thefts (heavy, private, and light vehicles), with Puebla experiencing the highest increase in these incidents. Although Estado de México still leads with 400 thefts from January to May, Puebla saw a 16% increase, totaling 229 incidents in the cited period.

A similar trend occurred in Guanajuato, rising from 41 thefts in April 2024 to 52 in May of the same year. Of greater concern is the high incidence of violence associated with these thefts. Román noted that violence has been involved in 75% of the cases in Puebla.

The president of ANERPV emphasized that, despite Estado de México having the highest theft rates, it is where the largest number of vehicles are recovered. This is due to the use of technology and protocols developed and operated in collaboration with the National Guard.

So far this year, the association has recovered more than 544 million pesos in assets by retrieving 672 units, including trucks, trailers, dry boxes, private cars, and motorcycles. To date, as a result of authorities’ actions and with the assistance of ANERPV, 92 suspected criminals have been apprehended, and 19 properties linked to organized crime have been seized.
