The heavy vehicle market in Mexico showed contrasting behavior during August 2026. Wholesale sales continued in positive territory , while retail sales again registered a decline compared to the same month in 2025.

According to the Statistical Bulletin of the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor-Trailer Producers (ANPACT) , during the eighth month of this year, two thousand 719 units were sold wholesale , a growth of 15.8% compared to the two thousand 348 of August 2025.

With this result, between January and August wholesale sales reached 19,956 vehicles , a figure 7.0% higher than the 18,654 units sold during the same period last year.

The cargo segment sold 2,380 units wholesale during August 2026, a 22.5 percent year-over-year increase . Among the fastest-growing categories were Class 7 , with a 145.5 percent increase , followed by Class 8 at 92.8 percent , while fifth-wheel tractors saw a 17.3 percent increase . In contrast, Classes 4 and 5 declined by 29.6 percent and 25.0 percent, respectively.

In the January-August period of 2026, cargo totaled 16,992 units , a 7.3 percent increase . However, fifth-wheel tractor-trailers saw a 10.5 percent decline , with 7,688 units compared to 8,592 during the same period in 2025. Class 8 trucks, on the other hand, accumulated a 24.2 percent increase .

Passenger traffic showed a different pattern in the wholesale channel. During August, 339 units were sold , 16.3% fewer than in 2015. Class 7 sales grew by 161.6% , while Class 8 sales fell by 75.9% , and intercity buses declined by 5.7% . Year-to-date, the segment totaled 2,964 units, an increase of 5.2% .

Retail maintains the contraction

Retail sales continued their downward trend during August 2026. Two thousand 888 vehicles were sold during the month , a decrease of 8.9% compared to the three thousand 171 units sold in August 2025. In the January-August period, the market totaled 21 thousand 622 units , 19.0% less than the 26 thousand 685 sold during the same period last year.

Retail sales of cargo trucks reached 2,487 units in August of this year, a year-over-year decrease of 3.5 percent . Class 6 trucks advanced 15.8 percent , Class 8 trucks grew 9.4 percent , and Class 5 trucks increased 3.7 percent . In contrast, fifth-wheel tractors declined 11.2 percent , Class 7 trucks fell 14.3 percent, and Class 4 trucks declined 12.8 percent.

Overall, cargo sales continued to decline by 16.2% , with 18,643 units sold. Fifth-wheel tractor-trailers remain among the most affected segments, contracting by 27.5% , falling from 11,807 units between January and August 2025 to 8,557 in the same period of 2026.

Passenger sales also failed to reverse the trend in the retail channel. During August 2026, 401 units were sold , 32.4% fewer than in 2025. Class 8 saw a 57.6% drop , while Class 7 decreased by 31.1% . Intercity buses declined by 2.4%, and Classes 5 and 6 fell by 6.7%.

Between January and August of this year, retail passenger sales contracted by 32.8% , with 2,979 units sold. Intercity buses saw a 25.0% decrease , and Class 8 buses registered a cumulative decline of 59.9% .

August’s results confirm the difference between the two channels: wholesale has accumulated growth of 7.0%, while retail remains 19.0% below its 2025 projection . In freight, Class 8 showed strong monthly growth in wholesale, while fifth-wheel tractors experienced double-digit declines in both wholesale and retail sales
