Aaron Sanchez, manager of the Altiplano and Western Region of Scania Mexico, explained that San Luis Potosi was chosen as the first point because of its location and connectivity, but the operational objective is what happens before delivering a vehicle again.

“What we are looking for is for this workshop to function in order to guarantee that the purchase of used vehicles […] results in a unit without faults, a unit that is ready for the road,” he said.

And to get back on the road, the units go through a checklist of up to 100 points , divided into five categories that cover safety and operational control, powertrain, diagnostics, chassis, suspension, structure and cab conditions.

The inspection can extend to the vehicle’s inner workings. If necessary, technicians can remove and repair an engine , as well as work on the transmission and differentials before the vehicle is put back on sale.

The return to San Luis Potosí also has a historical component for the company. Gisela Quintero, Director of Customer Experience and Services at Scania Mexico, recalled that it was precisely there where the company began its journey in the country.

But the opening also comes at a time when investment decisions face a less straightforward scenario.

Manuel Aranda, Retail Director of Scania Mexico, acknowledged that the country is experiencing a “quite uncertain” economic situation and that, in such scenarios, companies tend to slow down or postpone investments . In response, he maintained that the company’s strategy has been to maintain investments in infrastructure and customer service capacity.

“At Scania we have been doing the complete opposite; we have been opening new sites, expanding our capacity, hiring more staff, and investing in tooling,” said Aranda, who added that the expansion will continue to increase service capacity in the country.

In addition to infrastructure, another key element for the used car market is knowing the vehicle’s history . During the presentation, it was detailed that 98% of the vehicles considered were covered by a maintenance policy , allowing their service history to be traced through the brand’s workshops.

For his part, David Hernández, National Manager of Used Vehicles at Scania Mexico, explained that the strategy seeks precisely to extend the life cycle of vehicles and support fleet renewal beyond the sale of new units.

“Fleet renewal in the trucking industry doesn’t just depend on selling new units, but also on the ecosystem that surrounds them,” he noted.

The scheme also targets small and medium-sized transport companies looking to incorporate newer vehicles without necessarily acquiring a new unit, in a market where knowing the maintenance, mechanical conditions and costs that may come after the purchase can make the difference.

With San Luis Potosí as its starting point, Scania thus opens a new stage for its used and multi-brand business in Mexico, extending the support of the units beyond their first owner.

The integration of technology into heavy vehicles has opened new possibilities for preventing road accidents, but safety is no longer limited to the systems installed in the vehicles. Connectivity, operational monitoring, and operator training are also part of a strategy aimed at reducing risks.

For Gilberto Rodríguez, Sales Engineering and Electromobility Manager at Scania Mexico , the integration of these elements allows for better use of the tools available in the vehicles and their application to daily operations.

“The big differentiator is how everything works together: the truck, the monitoring systems, that is, fleet management systems, and the training and development aspect,” Rodríguez explained.

In an interview with T21, he pointed out that Scania ‘s strategy starts with the design of the vehicles and includes the incorporation of different driver assistance systems.

“At Scania, safety is a design feature, not an optional package,” he stated, explaining that these systems are integrated as standard in the units that the company sells in Mexico.

Among the available technologies are emergency braking assistance , blind spot detection , lane departure warning and correction , as well as sensors to detect objects , pedestrians and cyclists in the front, side and rear areas of the vehicle.

Adaptive cruise control is also included , allowing the driver to set a speed and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front. According to Rodríguez, if that distance decreases, the system can intervene and even bring the vehicle to a complete stop without driver intervention.

However, the executive maintained that the vehicle’s equipment is only one component of the strategy, which also includes connectivity, monitoring systems, fleet management, and operator training.

Rodríguez explained that the information generated by the units allows observation of their behavior and, together with training, the use of technology as part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at increasing safety during operation.

Regarding the equipment, he also highlighted the use of a hydraulic retarder associated with the transmission, a component that contributes to the control of the unit and is part of the specifications of the brand’s vehicles.

Electromobility still faces challenges in Mexico

The technological evolution of heavy transport also opens another front for the industry: electromobility . The specialist considered that Mexico is in an initial stage and that its progress will depend mainly on three components: technology, charging infrastructure, and regulation.

Regarding the first point, he noted that the technology is already available among manufacturers participating in the Mexican market. The challenge, he said, lies primarily in creating the necessary conditions to broaden its adoption.

“The electric vehicle charging infrastructure, which in Mexico, to be completely honest, is not enough and there is much more to develop,” he said.

Added to this challenge is the need to advance laws and regulations that allow for the standardization of specifications for both the charging infrastructure and the electric vehicles themselves.

For Rodríguez, having the technology, expanding the charging network, and developing a regulatory framework will be the three fundamental elements for Mexico to gradually move towards electromobility in transportation.

Regarding its performance in the Mexican market, Scania accumulated 524 retail sales of cargo vehicles between January and March 2026 , of which 295 were tractor-trailers and 229 were other types of cargo vehicles, according to figures from the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor-Trailer Manufacturers (ANPACT) . Tractor-trailer sales represented a 21.1% decrease compared to the same period in 2025, while other types of cargo vehicles saw a 472.5% increase.

Women’s participation in the Mexican labor market reached 46.3% in 2024 , according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) ; however, there are some sectors that are below average, such as the maintenance and support sector for heavy vehicles.

Ana Laura Islas Tello, People Development & Sustainable Culture Manager of Scania Mexico, described that the initiative is part of their United Nations Global Compact strategies , and is a business strategy for Scania based on having more diversity of thought, and better products and services.

Islas emphasized that the brand’s entire effort is focused on ensuring that the graduates remain committed to working for Scania , and if they do leave the company, an effort will be made for the benefit of the industry as a whole.

Comprehensive vision

Although the Technicians and Engineers of the Future program aims to train specialists for the automotive industry, the curriculum is comprehensive and complements their technical training.

Therefore, in addition to STEM skills, they also receive soft skills training . “This program complements their academic training, with applications such as leadership workshops, resume writing, and interview preparation. We are becoming advisors for their professional careers ,” highlighted Adriana Davy, Marketing and Communications Manager at Scania Mexico.

“Another topic we talk about a lot is sisterhood. It’s normal for classrooms to be all girls, so sometimes they’re not used to being among women, and this type of training also aims to address emotional issues,” Davy added.

Among other topics, personal finances are addressed , along with advice on managing their resources, because there is an awareness that some of these women may be the economic support of their households.

Although only technicians graduated in this first generation , some are engineering students and the goal is for them to also participate in the other program, which lasts for a year of training instead of three weeks .

For Scania’s executives, the goal is clear: to trigger the participation of more companies and the training of more women with the skills required by the industry, which will also allow them to change their lives and those of their families.

Eduardo Quijano, deputy general manager of Grupo GAL, explained that the main challenge for the sector continues to be the human factor , which is why the company has reinforced its investment in its training center through simulators, school trucks, dormitories and training programs to incorporate new operators.

The executive added that, in addition to the talent shortage, the industry faces a market with a more irregular demand for transportation services, forcing companies to be more efficient and flexible to respond to the needs of their customers.

In that context, Quijano highlighted that one of Grupo GAL’s main achievements has been expanding its value proposition beyond transportation.

“The great achievement of the business has been finding a service network that adapts to the diverse needs of customers,” he commented.

When defining Grupo GAL in one word, Quijano chose “resilience ,” asserting that the company has overcome various economic cycles thanks to financial discipline, the constant renewal of its fleet, and a philosophy of continuous improvement.

The commitment to expanding its infrastructure is also supported by the brand’s continued performance in the Mexican market.

In an environment marked by global economic uncertainty, rising interest rates, and a national fleet with an average age of around 19 years, specialized financing has become a strategic tool to promote the modernization of Mexican road transport.

Manufacturer finance companies have ceased to be merely a credit provider and have become a business partner capable of understanding the operational needs of the sector and designing solutions tailored to each type of carrier, explained Rodrigo Clemente, general manager of Scania Finance Mexico , in an interview with T21.

“Customers use their bank lines of credit to meet operational needs, cash flow, or investments. That’s why, when it comes to acquiring transportation equipment, the manufacturer’s financing plays a fundamental role,” he said.

Unlike traditional banks, branded financial institutions understand the economic cycles of the sector , the seasonality of operations, and the specific characteristics of each customer segment, the executive explained.

It is precisely because of this close relationship that more flexible plans can be developed during periods of volatility, and companies can be supported when they face adverse market conditions. “We experience the same difficulties as our clients. When the sector is doing well, we are doing well; when it faces challenges, we understand them and seek solutions,” Rodrigo Clemente emphasized.

One of the challenges facing the industry, Clemente acknowledged, is to eliminate the perception that the financial area represents a barrier to closing deals.

In this area, Scania Finance is working on an internal transformation aimed at streamlining processes, strengthening digitalization, and offering a more efficient customer experience. The goal is to maintain effective risk management without hindering business opportunities.

“We make our living by approving deals, not rejecting them. If there’s financing, there are sales and growth for everyone,” the executive stated.

Pre-owned vehicles, a strategic priority

One of Scania’s most important announcements was its commitment to the used vehicle market, a segment that Clemente considers essential to sustaining the growth of new vehicle sales.

The finance company works together with Scania Mexico ‘s commercial area to develop specific products that facilitate the acquisition of used units, particularly for small transporters and independent operators looking to start or consolidate their business.

According to the executive, the firm’s knowledge of its clients allows for a more accurate evaluation of financing operations in this segment, which is traditionally more complex for conventional financial institutions.

“Pre-owned vehicles are a priority on our agenda. We want to offer competitive solutions and streamlined processes so that more owner-operators can formally and sustainably join the market,” he said.

Renewing the fleet, the big challenge

One of the main structural problems of Mexican road transport continues to be the high age of the vehicles.

While in other markets renewal occurs more rapidly, in Mexico the average age of the fleet is approaching 19 years, a situation that directly impacts operating costs, efficiency and equipment availability .

Many carriers still perceive renewal as an expense and not as an investment capable of reducing maintenance costs and improving productivity, Rodrigo Clemente inferred.

With this addition, Grupo GAL (number 65 in the Top 100 of Automotive Transport® ) has incorporated full-haul configurations into its Scania fleet for the first time.

The R460s will operate mainly in the Bajío region, while the R420s will cover the route between Mérida and Mexico City, one of the company’s main corridors for the transport of refrigerated cargo between the Yucatán Peninsula and the center of the country.

The addition of these units coincides with Grupo GAL’s 30th anniversary .
The relationship between the two companies has maintained steady growth. After acquiring three units in 2024, Transportes Especializados GAL added 43 trucks during 2025 and is now incorporating another 35 vehicles.

Alejandro Mondragón, president and CEO of Scania Mexico, explained that this evolution also shows the technological changes that the product has undergone since the first units incorporated by the carrier.

“We started two years ago with three units, then we added 43 and now 35. The technologies have changed: we started with NTG, then with Super, now Euro 6, and these latest ones bring the new dashboard and substantial improvements for the operator,” he commented in an interview with T21.

The executive stated that the goal is to offer an increasingly intelligent vehicle and support its performance with a service structure that allows it to remain in operation for as long as possible.

As part of the alliance’s growth, Scania will install a Customer Workshop Services (CWS) within Grupo GAL’s facilities . Through this program, Scania-trained technical personnel will provide specialized maintenance directly at the carrier’s yards.

This will allow the vehicles to be serviced without the company having to move them to a Scania branch, with the aim of reducing unproductive journeys and downtime.

The 35 units also have a maintenance policy and were incorporated through an operation that includes a trade-in scheme , through which Scania will take back nearly new multi-brand vehicles as part of the fleet renewal process of Grupo GAL.

During the event, Armando Cantú, director of Grupo GAL, indicated that the incorporation of the new tractor trucks represents a long-term decision for a company that will celebrate three decades of operations in 2026.

He emphasized that during this period, Grupo GAL has traveled millions of kilometers, served hundreds of clients, and evolved into a leading provider of specialized logistics solutions. For Cantú, the delivery of these units is part of their commitment to “continue investing in safety, efficiency, innovation, and reliability.”

He emphasized that current supply chain conditions require carriers to ensure operational continuity , protect their customers’ products, and respond promptly to market needs.

“We will continue to invest in technology, in an increasingly modern fleet, in the development of our operators and in the continuous improvement of our processes,” he stated.

For his part, Eduardo Quijano Álvarez, deputy director of Grupo GAL, explained that the decision to increase Scania’s participation within the fleet responds to the coincidence between the carrier’s operational priorities and the attributes offered by the manufacturer.

“Scania is very focused on safety, efficiency, telemetry and sustainability; we are looking for exactly the same thing,” he emphasized.

Although 2026 has been a complex year for the heavy vehicle industry, Scania Mexico maintains a growth strategy driven by strengthening its own service and support network with the aim of getting closer to its customers and expanding coverage in the country .

The expansion of the Swedish firm in Mexican territory has been constant during the last 15 months , according to Manuel Aranda, Retail Director, who told T21 that the company has opened or expanded facilities in Tepotzotlán, León, Villahermosa, Puebla, Guadalajara, Chihuahua, Culiacán, Hermosillo and recently in Tijuana, consolidating a network that extends from the northern border to the southeast of the country.

One of the brand’s main differentiators is operating its own network of branches, which allows it to offer direct service without depending on dealerships or intermediaries .

“Being the only brand with a 100% owned branch network puts us closer to our customers, including owner-operators. This structure facilitates our customers’ operations because they find the same brand support anywhere in the country , from Tijuana to Cancun,” he emphasized.

For Aranda, having modern physical facilities also represents an element of trust for carriers, by offering spaces designed for operators, technicians and clients with better conditions, safety and efficiency during maintenance work, as is the case of the Tijuana branch, whose investment responds to the need to increase the capacity of attention in one of the regions with the greatest manufacturing and logistics activity in the country.

“The goal is to be closer to our customers, but in a more robust way,” he emphasized.

Manuel Aranda, Retail Director of Scania Mexico.

The new unit in Tijuana has 4,900 square meters (m2), a capacity for 11 bays, a specialized area for component repair , as well as a larger spare parts warehouse (200 m2).

One of the most significant changes for this location will be the implementation of a pilot program for two-shift operation , with extended hours to serve companies that operate continuously, particularly in the maquiladora and manufacturing industry of the northwest of the country.

“The region has a strong industrial focus and requires greater flexibility in scheduling. We want to offer that additional capacity to our clients,” he explained.

Beyond infrastructure, Scania’s commercial strategy seeks to expand its presence among small and medium-sized transport companies , as well as with the so-called owner-operator, a segment that historically faces greater challenges in accessing specialized services.

Aranda acknowledged that 2026 has been a challenging year for the heavy vehicle sector. According to the National Association of Bus, Truck, and Tractor-Trailer Manufacturers (ANPACT) , heavy vehicle production totaled 70,876 units in the January-June period of this year , a 13% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. In the cargo segment, 69,122 units were manufactured , representing a 13.1% contraction, while passenger vehicle production reached 1,754 units , a 7.5% year-over-year decrease.

As for exports, the half-year balance remained below that recorded in 2025. Between January and June 2026, 58,260 units were shipped abroad , which meant a decrease of 14.5 percent.

Despite this, the executive believes this scenario also opens opportunities to strengthen relationships with new clients through greater service coverage. “Being closer to our clients allows us to expand our user base and continue growing organically,” he emphasized.

The strengthening of infrastructure has also been accompanied by investments in human capital. From January to May of this year, Scania accumulated nearly 21,000 hours of training for its technical staff and increased its team of specialists nationwide by approximately 20% , with the aim of improving service quality and reducing response times.

“All of this is managed, I insist, as a single brand like Scania. I believe this gives us a great advantage for our customers so that they can be better served by a single brand, understanding their needs, their vehicles, and their operations,” he emphasized.

In northwest Mexico, one of the strategic regions for international trucking and export manufacturing, Scania has strengthened its presence with its own branches in Tijuana, Hermosillo and Culiacán, in addition to on-site service models in cities such as Mazatlán, Ciudad Obregón, La Paz and Los Cabos .

Regarding the business environment resulting from the uncertainty surrounding the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) , Aranda noted that the volatility has influenced the investment decisions of some carriers. However, he affirmed that Scania remains committed to the Mexican market .

“We continue to believe in Mexico and in Mexican transporters. Despite the uncertain environment, we continue to invest in and strengthen our presence in the country,” he concluded.

In Mexico, Scania has been present since 1994 and has more than a thousand employees and a 100% owned network of branches throughout the country and more than 55 service points, in which it offers comprehensive solutions that cover buses, trucks, engines and after-sales service, according to the brand.

The new facility in Tijuana represents a significant increase in operational capacity. The building is almost six times larger than the previous location , with improvements for customers, operators, and technicians. Key changes include increased service capacity, ergonomic improvements for staff, and a sustainability-oriented infrastructure.

The unit has a capacity for 11 bays and a specialized area for component repair , in addition to a warehouse to maintain the availability of spare parts and meet the needs of the border region.

Quintero pointed out that the network’s growth is not solely due to a specific number of openings, but rather to a constant review of market conditions. He added that the company conducts annual planning exercises to determine where it is necessary to expand the brand’s presence, relocate facilities, or increase capacity.

“We’ve come from challenging years in the industry, and as part of this planning, we’re redesigning our network plan. Our vision remains focused on increasing our coverage, and we’ll confirm the numbers as we go. We’re about to begin the planning process for the next five years,” he explained.

Gisela Quintero, Director of Customer Experience and Services at Scania Mexico.

One of the challenges in developing new facilities, he explained, is related to the specific conditions of each region, from regulatory processes to available infrastructure. Therefore, the company conducts preliminary analyses of capacity, regional operations, and specific requirements before defining new locations .

Strengthening the after-sales network in key industrial areas, such as the northern border, is a response to increased economic activity, as investment in specialized workshops allows serving an industry that contributes approximately 3.8% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) .

Scania’s strategy is also linked to a customer service philosophy based on close relationships . For Quintero, service represents a relationship where the company understands the needs of each operation.

“The transportation industry has many things in common, but each operation has its own specific challenges. One of the things that makes us strong is our ability to adapt, to be there for the customer, and to contribute through our service,” he said.

In this regard, maintenance contracts play a key role in the relationship between Scania and its customers. The executive emphasized that these contracts represent a shared commitment , as they allow for ongoing support of the vehicles throughout their lifecycle and provide greater predictability for transport companies.

“The maintenance policy is a two-way commitment. Our customers’ experience doesn’t end with the sale or when they pick up the vehicle from a branch . The customer experience begins there, and then we start this relationship, which obviously reveals challenges along the way, and I believe that learning and relationships are strengthened by how we overcome them,” explained Gisela Quintero.

Scania currently has a fleet of nearly 15,000 vehicles operating in Mexico, including both freight and passenger buses , a significant portion of which are under contracted maintenance agreements. The company aims to ensure its service infrastructure keeps pace with this growth and maintains operational availability for its customers.

TIJUANA, BC – With an investment of 13.6 million pesos (mdp), Scania Mexico reinforced its presence in the North Pacific region with the expansion and relocation of its branch in Tijuana, Baja California, with which it seeks to strengthen the service to carriers that operate in one of the most dynamic logistics corridors in the country .

The new facility, which has 4,900 square meters (m2), is in line with the manufacturer’s strategy to expand its network and improve service for its customers and fleets, going from three to 11 bays with the capacity to service up to 15 units per day .

The facility includes three spaces for repairing major components and has a parking area for tractor-trailers and a wash area, as well as a 200 m2 warehouse. To support this service capacity, the facility operates with 20 employees on staff.

During the inauguration, Scania Mexico executives agreed that Tijuana occupies a strategic position within the national logistics , connecting trade between Mexico and the United States, in addition to serving the manufacturing, export and distribution activity that characterizes Baja California.

Gisela Quintero, Director of Customer Experience and Services, explained that the new facility is 5.5 times larger than the previous branch and was designed to enhance the customer experience throughout the entire service process. She emphasized that the operator is an essential link in the logistics chain, as they are responsible for keeping goods and passengers moving.

“Today we are able to deliver a new facility that is built, designed, and conceived to improve the experience of our customers, to welcome the drivers who have the task of traveling our highways to transport goods, to transport people, to keep Mexico moving. And when they come to this branch, we truly want them to feel at home. That’s why we have dormitories to receive them, that’s why we have an area for them to rest, a drivers’ lounge where, while we take care of the unit, they can have a break,” he emphasized.

In environmental matters, Quintero highlighted that 95% of the energy required by the branch is generated through solar panels , in addition to incorporating LED lighting, ecological use of water in the sanitary services and separation of oily waters, elements aligned with the company’s global sustainability strategy.

The relocation of the Tijuana plant is part of Scania’s ongoing expansion strategy across the country, which began in 2025. This strategy includes new branches in Tepotzotlán, Culiacán, and Villahermosa, as well as the relocation of the León plant, the expansion of the Puebla plant, and the relocation of the Bus Chassis Quality Assurance and Assembly (BBMQA) area in Querétaro. These investments total 287.9 million pesos, earmarked for expanding Scania’s network, with a goal of reaching 140,000 square meters of new or remodeled facilities by 2027 .

In his presentation, Manuel Aranda, Retail Director of Scania Mexico, stated that the company maintains its strategy of operating a 100% company-owned branch network , which aims to guarantee consistent service standards and maintain direct contact with customers.

He anticipated that the company is already working on at least five new expansion projects in the country, and that Scania’s investments will continue.

“We know this is a marathon, a long-term project, and that’s what we’re betting on. We haven’t run out of steam or energy; we’re here with the right attitude, and we continue to dream and continue to grow,” Aranda emphasized.

This investment comes at a time when logistics faces significant challenges. The economic slowdown is forcing transport companies to improve fleet availability, control operating costs, and reduce downtime—factors where service infrastructure becomes increasingly important.

Meanwhile, Gerardo Mojica, manager of the Pacific region of Scania Mexico, highlighted the importance of this new facility for the area.

“Our clients travel more than 15,000 kilometers from Culiacán to Tijuana every day. So, they will always be welcome here. We will provide them with all the facilities they need, both as owners and their drivers. We have service rooms for them; we have all the necessary amenities,” he emphasized.

The new unit is part of the strengthening of after-sales support for customers operating in the Pacific region, a key area for national transport due to its size, connectivity and logistical dynamism, in which more than 1,700 Scania vehicles circulate .

They deliver units

At the inauguration, Scania Mexico delivered units to its clients Shomer Autotransportes , Diez Concretos and Autotransportes Luga , who highlighted the quality of the vehicles and the service offered by the brand.

In an interview with T21, Pablo Rey, CEO of Shomer Autotransportes, emphasized that Scania trucks are very robust, “it’s our home brand. With this truck, we now have 10 Scania units and our plan is to have more aggressive growth.”
