The strong performance of the Mexican automotive industry continues to be reflected in the sector’s figures. During April 2026, 118,859 light vehicles were sold in the domestic market, representing an 8.6% increase compared to the same month in 2025, when 109,420 units were sold, according to data from the  National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) published on Wednesday.

The positive trend in car sales also extended into the first four months of the year, with 500,512 units sold, an increase of 4.8% compared to the same period last year, in which 477,409 vehicles were sold.

According to statistics from the  Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Light Vehicles (RAIAVL) , the accumulated figure represented the best result for a January-April period in the last nine years.

In the January-April 2026 cycle, the brands that stood out in vehicle sales were Nissan  with 17.3%,  General Motors  with 13.2%,  Volkswagen  with 11%,  Toyota  with 8.1% and  KIA  with 7.2% market share, according to the  Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA)  and the  Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) .

The report highlighted that Chinese brands showed variable performance , although they continue to gain ground in the Mexican market.

In that sense, Geely increased its sales by 283.3% in April 2026 compared to the same month in 2025, Changan grew by 101.1%, JAC fell by 5.4%, MG Motor declined by 4.4%, and Foton increased its annual sales by 2.9%.

Other brands in the sector performed well year-on-year in the fourth month of the year. Stellantis grew 15.8%, Hyundai  advanced 13.7%, Honda rose 2%, Volkswagen accelerated 5%, and Mitsubishi  reported a 4.6% increase in sales.

With the April rebound in annual sales of light vehicles, the Mexican automotive industry has now recorded two months of positive figures, following a 0.3% drop last February.

The above reflects an improvement in the purchasing power of Mexican consumers, in an economy that is beginning to show slight signs of recovery, although specialists have pointed out that risks still persist, mainly due to external factors such as the conflict in the Middle East and a constantly changing global trade policy, framed by the imposition of tariffs.

Conversely, in the first two months of 2026, 250,076 vehicles were sold , which represented an increase of 4.4% compared to the same period last year, in which 239,555 units were sold.

According to data from the  Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Light Vehicles (RAIAVL) , this is the best result for a January-February period in the last nine years.

In the January-February 2026 period, the brands that stood out in vehicle sales were Nissan  with 18% market share,  General Motors  with 13%,  Volkswagen  with 11.2%,  Toyota  with 7.9%, and  KIA  with 7.3%, according to the  Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA)  and the  Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) .

Meanwhile, in the second month of the year, Mitsubishi reported a 13.8% increase in sales compared to February 2025, Ford  increased 8.9%, Volkswagen accelerated 1.4%, and  Honda 2.6%.

The performance of Chinese brands during the period showed mixed results. JAC  saw an 18.4% drop in sales in February 2026 compared to the same month in 2025,  MG Motor  experienced a 1.6% increase, and  Geely  saw a 249% increase.

The Inegi report indicated that as of January 2026, the  Zeekr  and  Lynk & Co brands , marketed in Mexico by the company  Geely Auto Mexico Corporation , were incorporated into the registry .

February’s vehicle sales figures showed mixed results: on the one hand, annual sales declined, while the performance in the first two months reflected good results.

According to analysts, moderate private consumption is expected this year , stemming from external factors such as global tariffs, and internal factors such as low economic growth, which will affect Mexicans’ vehicle purchasing decisions.

In February 2025,  light vehicle sales in Mexico reached 117,617 units , which meant an increase of 2.8%  compared to the same month last year, when 114,408 cars were sold , according to data from the  Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry (RAIAVL)  of the  National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

The agency also reported that during the January-February period of this year, automobile sales totaled 237,597 units , which represented an increase of  4.4%  compared to the same period in 2024.

Among  the most prominent brands in the year-to-date  are  Nissan  with  17.6%  of the market, followed by  GeneralMotors  with  13.2% ,  Volkswagen  with  12%  and  Toyota  with  8.1% , revealed in their report the  Mexican Association of Automobile Distributors (AMDA)  and the  Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) .

Other brands such as  KIA  with 7.4% and  Mazda  with 7.2% also had a good performance in vehicle sales during this period.

Meanwhile,  Asian firms showed variable performance . In this sense, the one that registered one of the largest drops in sales during February 2025 was the Chinese  Chirey , with a drop of  24.6% , reporting  1,784 units against the 2,367 sold in the same month last year.

Japanese company Toyota also had a 14.1%  decrease in vehicle sales  , with  8,232 cars compared to  9,587  sold in February 2024.

Jetour  sold  52  units in the second month of 2025, which represented a decrease of  78.3%  compared to the  240 vehicles it sold in February of last year.

According to data from Inegi, vehicle sales recorded in February of this year are the second highest figure in the history of sales in the sector, although the variation was lower than in previous months.

This progress occurs in a context of uncertainty due to the tariff policy imposed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump , by charging a 25% rate on various Mexican products , which came into effect on March 4, and which disrupts the Mexican automotive industry.

In 2024, light vehicle sales in Mexico totaled one million 496 thousand 806 units , which meant an increase of 9.8% compared to 2023, which represents the highest volume registered by the industry since 2018, although it is far from the record of 2016 when it placed more than 1.6 million units , according to information from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) , published by the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA)  and the  Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) .

The report also noted that in December 2024, automobile sales reached 146,365 units , representing an increase of 1.9% compared to the same month in 2023.

Among  the most prominent brands in the cumulative 2024 period is  Nissan  with  17%  of the market, followed by  General Motors  with  13.7%,  Volkswagen  with  11.8% , and  Toyota  with  8.1% , revealed AMDA and AMIA.

Other brands such as  KIA  with 7% and  Mazda  with 6.7% also performed well in vehicle sales during this period.

With these figures,  the Mexican automotive industry is making progress in its recovery , after a decline last September.

The positive results also come in the context of a new extension of the decree for the regularization of imported used vehicles, colloquially known as “chocolate cars”, which was extended until September 30, 2026.

It is also worth recalling that on December 23, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.  and  Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to begin discussions and considerations with a view to a business integration between the two firms through the establishment of a joint holding company , with the aim of strengthening their position in the global automotive industry  and confronting electric car manufacturers.
