The freight transport market in Mexico is under pressure to become increasingly efficient and contribute to the productivity of its customers, contributing 3.8% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and generating a movement of just over 560 million tons.

The configuration of double-articulated tractor-trailer trucks (fulls) is one of the alternatives that the transport sector has to achieve greater efficiency, and according to official data, there are more than 70,000 full units in circulation, which represents about 13% of the total fleet of tractor-trailer trucks that are in circulation, of the federal public service.

To contribute to the double trailer productivity strategy, trailer manufacturer Remosa launched Versabox, a 40-foot dry van with a retractable dolly, allowing for double trailer configurations with operational benefits and cost reductions.

“The concept is that the Dolly moves to be coupled to the second trailer, which gives you the benefit of reduced wear, since you can eliminate an axle and reposition the equipment without having to move the conventional Dolly, which represents a reduction in tire wear and toll payments,” says Miguel Díaz, Commercial Director of Remosa.

The Versabox 360 box has a shorter configuration , making it more efficient in handling and operating the double trailer.

“It’s not just about reducing the axle size; it also has the capability of retractable axles, which further reduces toll costs at a time when they have increased. This represents an advantage for the carrier and, consequently, has an impact on overall logistics. Furthermore, it improves stability and maneuverability,” says Raúl Díaz, CEO of Remosa.

Another advantage of this configuration is that it has composite panels, which translates into greater durability, lightness, thermal insulation that protects the goods, and also allows for better use of the payload, resulting in lower fuel consumption and better performance of all parts.

Mexico has a favorable outlook in e-commerce, and while growth has been rapid in recent years, the future looks even more promising. According to data from Payments and Commerce Market Intelligence (PCMI), the country will have a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33% between 2023 and 2026 in online product sales, the second highest in the region, only behind Peru.

In addition to this trend, the National Association of Supermarkets and Department Stores (ANTAD) reported that last March marked 13 consecutive months of year-over-year growth.

To meet the increased demand in the movement of goods due to both internal market consumption and e-commerce, Grupo Remosa, in collaboration with the needs of various clients, created a 57-foot dry van that complies with all current regulations and adapts to the logistics employed.

“Towards the end of June, we will be launching our 57-foot dry van with premium features such as Composite material, double sliding kingpin to adjust to maneuvers in each case, and a sliding skates system,” shared Raúl Díaz, CEO of Grupo Remosa.

The 57-foot dry van offers an additional 8.8 cubic meters (m3) of space. “The 57-foot van has 123.31 m3, while the 53-foot van has 114.51 m3, which translates to greater efficiency, productivity, and even an environmental benefit of doing more with less,” explained Alberto Montemayor, Commercial Director of Remolques Remosa.

This dry van complies with all current regulations, such as the Mexican Official Standard on weights and dimensions (NOM-012) for federal transportation vehicles, as well as NOM-035 for trailers and semi-trailers, including safety specifications and testing methods.

“Obviously, the e-commerce and retail markets can be target markets for this product we are now presenting at Remosa, but there are other industries that require a larger volume that could also feasibly use this 57-foot van,” highlighted Alberto Montemayor.

The 57-foot dry van coupled to a tractor-trailer complies with the T3-S2 configuration, which considers five axles and a maximum length of 23 meters (m). In the case of a Cab Over Engine (COE) truck, it reaches 21.35 m, while a truck with a front engine (or American) can reach 22.94 m.

This 57-foot van is built with the most recognized parts in the market, such as Hendrickson, Amparts-Promare, Grote, Haldex, Bendix, and 3M, among others.

“At Remosa, we are very attentive to the market’s needs. We have the ability to move quickly in our production lines at our Querétaro plant and offer a product that meets the productivity and efficiency needs of transporters,” added Raúl Díaz.
