This was announced by White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt , who announced that Trump will sign an executive order to delay the tariff measure until August 1.

At a press conference, Leavitt said that while there has been progress in the right direction, the U.S. government wants to ensure the agreements benefit the United States.

The new date, he said, is a recognition that the Republican administration is “doing what’s best for American workers and wants the best possible deals” for that group and the middle class.

Meanwhile, Trump has released the letters on his Truth Social account , which he announced on July 4 that he would send to countries that did not have a trade agreement with the United States, and whose rates could reach up to 70 percent .

The series of letters published so far have been sent to Malaysia, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Laos, among other countries. On July 4, the US president indicated that he would send between 10 and 12 letters per day, although he did not specify which countries would be the first to receive them or what fees he would impose.

“If you decide to respond with tariffs on American products, Washington will impose an additional tariff of that same amount, in addition to the percentages imposed this Monday,” the letters addressed to the leaders of each country state, as a warning from Trump.

The spokesperson confirmed that more letters will be sent in the coming days. She also emphasized that more agreements will be reached and that the countries will continue to negotiate with the United States.

It’s worth remembering that after last April 2, what Donald Trump called “Liberation Day,” the same US president suspended reciprocal tariffs for 90 days in order to negotiate with the countries with which his northern neighbor trades.

Since then, the United States has only reached trade agreements with the United Kingdom, China, and Vietnam , while negotiating with other partners. During this time, it also agreed to a truce with China.

Last May, the U.S. Court of International Trade (CIT) struck down reciprocal tariffs, ruling that Trump had exceeded his authority by imposing widespread taxes on imports from countries that sell more to the U.S. than they buy.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington temporarily suspended enforcement of the ruling in order to review the case.

However, on June 10, the court granted the Trump administration an early, short-term extension to continue imposing the tariffs while the legal challenges are resolved. The decision came after the US government appealed the CIT ruling.

Starting this Friday, Donald Trump , President of the United States, will reportedly begin sending letters with the reciprocal tariff rates he will impose on countries with which he has not yet reached a trade agreement and which will have to start paying on August 1, following the expiration of the 90-day truce he himself imposed on July 9.

“I think by the 9th (of July), they’ll be completely covered. They’ll range from tariffs of 60 to 70 percent to 10 to 20 percent,” Trump told reporters, adding that he will send about 10 letters a day.

Trump did not clarify which countries would be affected by the new tariffs he seeks to impose, but if they are implemented, they would be higher than those he proposed on April 2, which he called “Liberation Day.”

It’s worth remembering that after that date, Trump suspended reciprocal tariffs for 90 days to negotiate with the countries with which the United States trades. During the truce period, a 10 percent tariff was established.

So far, the United States has only reached trade agreements with the United Kingdom, China, and Vietnam , while it is negotiating with more than a dozen partners, including the European Union and Japan, and has agreed to a truce with China.

Last May, the U.S. Court of International Trade (CIT) struck down reciprocal tariffs, finding that the U.S. president exceeded his authority by imposing widespread taxes on imports from countries that sell more to the U.S. than they buy.

Trump’s tariff policy has already wreaked havoc on the Mexican economy.

In the automotive industry alone, vehicle production last May fell 2.03% compared to the same month in 2024, reaching 358,209 manufactured units , according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

In the same month, exports of light vehicles manufactured in Mexico totaled 301,112 units , representing a 2.88% annual drop. Year-to-date, shipments abroad also showed a 6.28% decrease , with 1,334,667 vehicles exported .

Uncertainty over U.S. tariff policy has also impacted Mexican merchandise exports, which totaled $55.476 billion in May 2025, representing a 0.4% decline compared to the same month in 2024, according to data from INEGI.

It’s worth remembering that the widespread imposition of tariffs on Mexican products has a long history and has been a theme Trump has used since his first term as president of the United States (2017-2021). He also resorted to this tactic during his recent presidential campaign, and it gained momentum when he was inaugurated on January 20 .

Starting May 14 , the northern neighbor will reduce tariffs on Chinese products from 145% to 30% , including those related to combating fentanyl trafficking. For its part, China will reduce tariffs on US products from 125% to 10% .

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent , along with U.S. TradeRepresentative Jamieson Greer , held a press conference to announce the agreement.

“We hope that as negotiations progress, there will also be the possibility of purchase agreements to balance our already large bilateral trade deficit,” Bessent said.

In addition, the parties agreed to cancel 91% of existing tariffs and suspend another 24% for the 90-day period.

“This initiative aligns with the expectations of producers and consumers in both countries and serves the interests of both nations, as well as the common interests of the world,” the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.

However, after the announcement in Geneva, US President Donald Trumpindicated that the 25% tariffs on vehicles and steel and aluminum will remain in place, and that new taxes on the pharmaceutical industry are being considered to “bring that business back to the United States.”

Impact on the markets

Following the announcement of the truce, the stock markets took a breather. The S&P 500 Index rose 3.1% , the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2% , and the offshore yuan gained 0.5% against the US dollar.

In addition, oil prices soared more than $1.60 per barrel, and the US dollar gained against the euro and the Japanese yen.

Last April, the U.S. administration raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 145% , while China imposed 125% tariffs on goods from the United States, creating uncertainty in the markets and leading to a decline in bilateral trade.
