The railway industry in Mexico transported 34.67 million tons during the first quarter of the year, a 3.9% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Pulse of the Operational Mexican Railway System for March, from the Railway Transportation Regulatory Agency (ARTF).

Of the total for the quarter, 10.97 million tons (31.63%) corresponded to domestic traffic, which increased by 18.8% compared to 2023, while 23.71 million tons (68.37%) were international traffic, which decreased by 1.9% year-over-year.

For the latter, 18.13 million tons (76.47%) were imports, which decreased by 0.9%, and 5.58 million tons (23.53%) were exports, which experienced a 5% growth.

Compared to the January-March period of 2023, Ferromex, Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) de Mexico, Ferrovalle, and Administradora de la Vía Corta Tijuana-Tecate (ADMI) increased the tons transported by 5.85%, 3.68%, 8.64%, and 68.07%, respectively.

On the other hand, the Coahuila Durango Line (LCD) and Ferrosur saw a decrease in their cargo volume by 3.93% and 4.98%, respectively.

The freight from January to March of this year was transported through 0.44 million loaded cars, although this number represented a 15.5% year-on-year decrease.

For March, the ARTF indicated that 144,059 loaded cars were mobilized, with which 12.06 million tons were transported, resulting in a 5.9% year-on-year growth.
