Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) of Mexico issued a call for people to take precautions and not approach or cross the railroad tracks for their own safety and that of the crew during the passage of the steam locomotive Emperatriz 2816, as it travels through the country as part of the “Final Spike Steam Tour.”

“All individuals observing the train’s passage should always remain at least 10 meters away from the tracks. People should never stand close to or on the train tracks, attempt to climb onto railway equipment, or any railway infrastructure. Always exercise caution around tracks and trains,” the company stated.

This follows the accident in Hidalgo where a woman was fatally injured while being very close to the train tracks taking a photograph.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss of life and wish to express our condolences to the family and loved ones of the woman,” the company said in a statement.

CPKC of Mexico is collaborating with the relevant authorities and will provide all necessary information for the corresponding investigation.

The Final Spike steam locomotive is already in the Ferrovalle yards and is expected to be exhibited in Polanco next Friday.

In Mexico, around 700 railroad-related accidents are recorded annually, with people being run over while trying to take a selfie on this type of infrastructure, people with headphones walking on the tracks, and texting while driving, being some of the causes.

The Mexican Association of Railroads (AMF) has an ongoing campaign to disseminate messages to prevent this and other types of accidents involving the sector.
