“We have good import prospects, including in the agro-industrial sector, from North America, and we are working with authorities to facilitate smoother customs clearance and continue trade between the countries,” said Francisco Fabila, president of the Mexican Railway Association (AMF) .

In an interview, he added that they have worked with the customs authority on the Mexican Digital Window for Foreign Trade (Vucem) to achieve faster crossings and continue trade between the two countries.

Without giving further details, he mentioned that there is a major player in both cross-border and intermodal transportation: auto parts and household appliances . “This entire sector, which is located in the Bajío region, comes in, is loaded, and is sent for export. It’s a dynamic movement, and we’re also seeing an upturn in cross-border cargo leaving from Pantaco.”

In this regard, he explained that they see a dynamism and operational condition that “we don’t see beginning to diminish.”

Fabila noted that intermodal has grown by double digits in all segments in recent years . Furthermore, the peak season is beginning, which, although it sees double-digit growth throughout the year, is the peak season in the second half of the year.

“The railroad industry and the various intermodal terminals have done their job in recent years, and today they are working more efficiently, increasing their capacity. Today, they operate trains with 120 pits and 240 containers, and they handle them in less than 24 hours. The value chain is extremely fluid. You see a lot of containerized movement at the border, both in Laredo, operated by CPKC , and Piedras Negras, operated by Ferromex . In the last year, efficiency has increased considerably, and the railroads in particular have paid close attention to the intermodal sector,” he stated.

It is worth mentioning that the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported that the accumulated volume in the first 19 weeks of the year, ending on May 10, registered 454,800 wagons, containers and intermodal trailers, 7.9% less than in the same cycle last year .

Although for the week ending May 10, 15,479 loaded rail cars were moved, representing a 24.6% increase compared to the same week in 2024, and 10,074 intermodal units, with zero growth.

While the latest growth figure was during the first five weeks of 2025 , where the accumulated volume was 123,091 wagons and intermodal containers and trailers, 16% more than at the same point last year.

“We are reviewing the AAR’s movement performance. We saw that, given the tariff climate, there was a possibility that it could come into effect. There was clearly an upswing in anticipation of the import and export of strategic goods. We’ll see how it performs in the coming months,” Fabila said.

To date, the Rail Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) has yet to publish figures for the end of 2024 and for the movement so far in 2025. Operational data is up to October, and safety data is up to September, both from the previous period .

The Lázaro Cárdenas Port Community reported late last week in a statement that cargo being shipped by rail to the Ferrovalle intermodal terminal in Mexico City remains stable and without setbacks .

This confirmation comes after Ferrovalle published a statement on May 5th requesting Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC of Mexico) , the concessionaire of the line that connects both logistics points, to suspend the shipment of goods from the Michoacan port , to avoid further saturation in its terminal due to difficulties “unrelated to the operation” in carrying out customs clearance.

The port community’s statement indicated that a session of the Logistics Subcommittee was held on May 7, where CPKC of Mexico specified that approximately 91% of rail traffic dispatched from Lázaro Cárdenas to Ferrovalle does not enter the controlled area , but rather goes to uncontrolled areas.

“This ensures that cargo will not be affected and will continue to operate normally. This means that the largest volume of cargo shipped from the port of Lázaro Cárdenas to Pantaco (Ferrovalle) will continue to operate without incident,” the statement reads.

There, customs agents were advised to clear merchandise directly from the port of Lázaro Cárdenas to avoid potential impacts on customers and port users.

The Lázaro Cárdenas Port Community is made up of port authorities, such as the Lázaro Cárdenas National Port System Administration (Asipona) , the port customs office, as well as private actors such as port terminals, customs agents, shipping agents, transporters, among others.

In the statement distributed by Ferrovalle, it was stated that a situation has been in place for a month that has resulted in 94% occupancy of the inspected facility’s total capacity, with an average dwell time of 18 days.

A source close to the operation at Ferrovalle, who requested anonymity, told T21 that customs agents have slowed down their operations due to the more exhaustive inspections currently being carried out by Mexico’s National Customs Agency (ANAM) .

The Ferrovalle Intermodal Terminal, also known as the Pantaco Terminal, is an important logistics hub for receiving and shipping goods to Mexico City and its metropolitan area via rail lines that connect with ports on the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico, as well as with the northern border.

Amid a tightening of tariff policies by the United States government, rail freight traffic between Mexico and its northern neighbor registered a 10.1% drop through mid-April compared to the same period in 2024.

According to figures from the Association of American Railroads (AAR) , the cumulative volume moved by railroads between both borders was 376,337 railcars, containers, and intermodal trailers.

This recorded decline was driven by a drop in all segments analyzed , except for intermodal freight , which rose slightly by 1.7% and which represents 46.4% of the total rail cars.

The sectors that registered the greatest decline were non-metallic minerals, metallic minerals and metals, agricultural products except cereals, and food.

Data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) , an office of the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) , indicates that as of the second month of this year, the rail share of trade with the United States was 10.9% , equivalent to seven billion 488 million dollars, compared to eight billion 344 million dollars in 2024, which translates into a drop of 9.9 percent.

Carlos Barreda Westphal, director of the Ferroviaria.mx platform , noted that based on figures recently published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , during the first quarter of this year, trade relations between Mexico and the United States showed a surplus equivalent to 4% compared to the same period in 2024.

In contrast, he commented, the AAR has published negative results regarding rail freight traffic in Mexico, stating that there were declines in virtually all types of freight transported.

“These two indicators are linked since the largest percentage of freight moved by rail in our country is linked to trade with the United States, although the opposite is true: we import more goods by this means of transport than we export,” he explained.

He also specified that the AAR excludes the operations of Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), which is the country’s second-largest cargo operator and responsible for serving the main rail border crossing in Nuevo Laredo.

“So, for now, the available information is incomplete, although it could easily be estimated that the results will actually be positive if we take into account the results obtained by Grupo México Transportes during the first quarter and the increases in purchases that were anticipated as a preventive measure against the entry into force of the tariffs announced by the Donald Trump administration,” he opined.
