Mexicana de Aviación has signed a contract with the Brazilian company Embraer for the acquisition of 20 new aircraft, with deliveries slated to begin in the second quarter of 2025.

In a statement, the state-owned airline detailed that there will be 10 E190-E2 aircraft with 108 seats and 10 E195-E2 aircraft with 132 seats, both featuring a “single-class design.”

The airline will be the first operator of Embraer E2 aircraft in Mexico, whose state-of-the-art technology will allow for fuel savings and lower maintenance costs, according to the company’s statement.

“With this strategic decision, the airline will increase and modernize its fleet to strengthen connectivity between more cities with various domestic and international destinations,” they said.

Meanwhile, Priscilla Doro Solymossy, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Latin America and the Caribbean at Embraer’s Commercial Aviation division, welcomed Mexicana as “another E2 operator and the first in Mexico.”

“The success and rapid growth that this airline has achieved since resuming operations in December 2023 have been remarkable; flying to 18 destinations, transporting more than 115,000 passengers, and accumulating over 3,280 hours in this short period,” she mentioned.

T21 reported on April 23 that the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) requested 20,871.7 million pesos (mdp) from the Ministry of Finance for the purchase of aircraft for Mexicana de Aviación, despite being involved in a lawsuit by SAT Aero Holdings due to non-payment for aircraft leasing.

However, the 20,871.7 mdp was supplemented with 222,813.3 mdp for maintenance and operation, bringing the total to 243,685 mdp.
