Amid the constant changes in the United States’ tariff policy and in the run-up to the revision of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) , scheduled for July 2026, the Ministry of Economy (SE) announced this Monday in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the call for comments on the operation of this trade agreement .

According to the DOF’s publication, a public consultation process is necessary to gather information, comments, and recommendations for evaluating the functioning of the USMCA.

This is because the agreement will celebrate its sixth anniversary in July 2026, “making it necessary to begin preparations for the joint review.”

According to Article 34.7 of the USMCA (Review and Extension of Validity), paragraph 2, it is established that on the sixth anniversary of the entry into force of the trade agreement, the Free Trade Commission will meet to carry out a joint review of its operation .

The DOF stated, “in order to evaluate any recommendations submitted by any of the parties and decide on appropriate measures, allowing each party to make recommendations at least one month in advance of the commission meeting.”

The call establishes that the deadline for submitting information, comments, or recommendations will be 60 calendar days from the publication of this notice in the DOF.

Information, comments and recommendations must be sent in physical or electronic copies to the email address: consultas.tmec@economia.gob.mx , as well as via the website: http://www.buzontmec.economia.gob.mx .

It can also be submitted in printed format to the Official Documents Office of the Ministry of Economy, located in the Cuauhtémoc City Hall.

For its part, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced on September 16 that it would also begin public consultations, setting a 45-day deadline , following publication in the Federal Register, to receive comments and requests regarding the USMCA .

It’s worth remembering that the Monterrey 2025 Transportation and Logistics Meeting (ETYL MTY) , organized by Grupo T21, will address the importance of this trade agreement and its impact on trade between Mexico and the United States.

In this regard, the Mexico-U.S. panel on the USMCA, cross-border trade, and regional competitiveness will be held on October 15. Specialists will analyze the challenges and opportunities within the framework of this agreement, which will be reviewed in 2026.

According to analysts, the USMCA review will be complex due to the protectionist economic policy pursued by the United States, which has triggered a tariff war with several countries around the world, including its main trading partners in North America: Mexico and Canada, on whom it has imposed tariffs on various products, such as steel and aluminum.
