Artificial intelligence (AI) in the trucking industry is no longer an aspirational concept or a technological fad; it is a reality and a prevailing concept that must be addressed. This was the motivation behind the 3rd Trayecto Forum , where the impact of this tool was discussed, along with how truck and technology suppliers are incorporating it.

Hernán Guerra, IT director of Trayecto  (number 1 in the  Top 100 of Autotransport® ), was responsible for moderating the conversation, whose central idea was: AI is already directly impacting the efficiency, profitability and safety of the sector .

The participants’ approach focused on showcasing real-world examples, measurable results, and a pragmatic view of technology adoption. Rather than making futuristic predictions, the conversation centered on how AI is helping to make better decisions, reduce uncertainty, and transform processes that have historically been reactive.

From prevention to profitability

One of the greatest contributions of artificial intelligence is consistency in decision-making. In an environment where each truck generates tens of thousands of data points, AI makes it possible to identify patterns, anticipate failures, and prioritize risks without relying on subjective judgment , said Jorge Vargas, Strategy Director of Daimler Truck Mexico .

Predictive maintenance was one of the clearest examples. Servicing a unit before it fails can extend its lifespan by up to 30% and generate savings of between 18% and 25%, in addition to improving capital utilization. In practice, AI functions as a preventative system that “diagnoses” the vehicle before the problem becomes critical.

This approach also extends to route allocation, trip balancing, and empty mileage reduction, relying on algorithms that constantly learn and are fed by external data such as maps, traffic, and weather conditions. The ultimate goal is clear: greater operational efficiency and consistent decisions that directly impact profitability.

AI from manufacturing and operations

Artificial intelligence doesn’t just act when the truck is already on the road, but from much earlier, in the design and development phases , as shared by Javier Valadez Ortega, Director of Operations at PACCAR Mexico .

The use of virtual reality, mixed reality, and AI allows for the simulation of components, the validation of aerodynamics, and compliance with regulations without the need to build physical prototypes, reducing time and costs. Seemingly minor adjustments, such as mirrors or deflectors, can generate fuel savings of up to 2%, a significant figure when scaled to entire fleets, Valadez Ortega added.

Furthermore, AI is already being used to simulate engine behavior at different altitudes and under varying conditions, optimizing performance in complex geographies like Mexico. This demonstrates that decarbonization is not limited to electrification, but rather involves optimizing every variable that impacts fuel consumption .

In day-to-day operations, Javier Valadez highlighted another immediate benefit: administrative automation . Processes such as CFDI (  Digital  Tax  Receipt via  Internet) , customs declarations, and foreign trade registrations can reduce operating time by up to 80%, freeing up resources for strategic activities.

Digital agents, security and culture

The panel also addressed how AI is transforming everyday logistics operations. Marcos Diehl, head of Latam at HappyRobot , demonstrated how digital agents are already performing complete tasks: scheduling appointments, handling incidents, negotiating loads, coordinating shipments, and managing collections, without constant human intervention.

Specific cases demonstrated dramatic reductions in time and costs, as well as improvements in service levels. AI not only recommends, but also acts, becoming a digital workforce that operates 24/7 and scales according to demand.

In terms of safety, the conversation was particularly relevant. Trayecto and HappyRobot agreed that prevention is AI’s greatest value. From internal cameras that detect fatigue, seatbelt use, or unauthorized presence , to systems that validate identity by voice or face and activate automatic protocols, the technology is already helping to significantly reduce theft and accidents.

However, the biggest challenge is not technical or financial, but cultural. Adopting artificial intelligence requires training, awareness-raising, and clear communication with operators and administrative staff. AI is not meant to replace people, but to reduce their operational workload and allow them to focus on critical decisions.

The conclusion: artificial intelligence is already transforming trucking , but its true value depends on how it’s integrated into operations. It’s not about buying technology, but about understanding it, adapting it, and turning it into a business enabler.

The lack of operators is already having a direct impact on the operation of road transport : around 90,000 units are stopped due to a shortage of operators and the figure could exceed 108,000 by 2028 if urgent measures are not taken, according to data from the  National Chamber of Freight Transport (Canacar) cited in a statement.

In that context, the inauguration of the Training and Development Center for Freight Transport Operators in San Martín Texmelucan, Puebla, took place , a project promoted by the government of Puebla with the support of Canacar, in which PACCAR Mexico participated .

The event was led by Miguel Ángel Martínez, president of Canacar —in what was his last official act at the head of the organization— and was attended by Víctor Gerardo Gabriel Chedraui, Secretary of Economic Development of the State of Puebla; Alfonso Aguirre González, general director of the Institute of Training for Work of the State of Puebla (Icatep) ; as well as Javier Valadez, director of Operations of PACCAR Mexico.

As part of the collaboration, PACCAR contributed a Kenworth T680 truck that will be used for the practical training of the operators.

The unit will allow students to train with state-of-the-art equipment , in a coordination scheme between the state government , Canacar, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) and Icatep.

During the inauguration, Javier Valadez stated that the goal is for the center to become a benchmark for the training of operators, and reiterated the company’s commitment to providing technology and training for their professional development.

The delivery of the T680 incorporates cutting-edge technology into practical and specialized training, at a time when the sector faces one of its most relevant structural challenges: the lack of talent to operate the units that support logistics and supply in the country.

Amidst art pieces and conversations about performance reviews, market share and profitability, the PACCAR Mexico network first toured the rooms of the Soumaya Museum.

Art served as the backdrop before the discussion of figures. Later, the cocktail reception allowed executives to exchange impressions about a demanding year; dinner concluded the prelude to the awards ceremony.

The biggest distinction came at the end, as it should. Kenworth DAF Trucks of Monterrey was named Dealer of the Year 2025 , an award that cannot be explained by a single indicator, but by the disciplined sum of all of them: sustained profitability, consistent commercial execution, rigorous financial control, and well-structured investment plans.

During the ceremony, it was explained that this award is given based on “comprehensive performance, a solid and disciplined approach to business, smart and well-established investment plans, meticulous attention to detail, and constant monitoring of financial indicators that guarantee operational excellence,” according to Alejandro Novoa, CEO of PACCAR Mexico.

The shortlist for Dealer of the Year 2025 consisted of:

GUADALAJARA, JAL.- At the ANPACT 2025 Transportation Expo , PACCAR Mexico presented the new generation of DAF trucks, highlighting the XG model, which will arrive in Mexico in 2026, combining advanced aerodynamics, optimized power, and great comfort for operators.

The arrival of DAF in Mexico, just a year ago, has been revolutionary, with more than 200 units delivered and a network of 160 sales points supporting its expansion. In this sense, the DAF XG is a symbol of innovation, safety, and profitability, responding to the demands of carriers traveling throughout the country

One of the features of this model is its aerodynamics , which makes it 19% more efficient in airflow compared to previous generations. The streamlined cab features a pronounced curvature that directs air to the sides of the vehicle, minimizing frontal drag and optimizing fuel consumption in long-haul operations.

The DAF XG’s windshield is 33% wider and curved at its corners , reducing blind spots and improving the operator’s peripheral visibility. This design not only facilitates more precise maneuvers but also contributes to a safer and more relaxed operation, highlighted Raúl Ayala, Engineering Director at PACCAR Mexico.

The unit also features operator assistance cameras that are part of its digital vision system, replacing traditional mirrors with 12- and 15-inch screens inside the cab. A third camera provides a view that enhances safety in the operation of the unit, the specialist emphasized

As for the powertrain , the DAF XG is equipped with PACCAR’s proprietary Euro 6 MX-13 engine, delivering 460 horsepower (hp) and 1,843 lb-ft of torque. This low-end power is paired with 12- or 16-speed automated transmissions, ensuring efficient performance on inclines or with heavy loads.

The unit’s low-friction rear axles complement the powertrain, minimizing energy losses and maximizing efficiency

Among other features, the passive cooling design in the DAF XG’s front grille is another key innovation, allowing direct airflow to the cooling system. Meanwhile, the electronically controlled suspension automatically adjusts axle pressure according to load, preventing premature wear and ensuring stability on curves or uneven terrain.

The cabin also offers a customizable 12-inch main screen with classic or sport modes, Ayala highlighted.

Projections

With an estimated production of more than 14,000 vehicles by 2025, the company’s plant, located in the municipality of Mexicali, Baja California, is consolidating itself as a key point for the brand, which was recognized with the Made in Mexico seal for the quality of the products manufactured at this facility in the country.

This commitment has materialized in a strategic investment of over $60 million USD in the last two years. Furthermore, one of the firm’s strategic projects was the construction of an area designed to accelerate and optimize the production of electric and natural gas trucks, including advanced testing infrastructure that simulates real-world operating conditions, with an investment of over $36 million USD. With this, the company positions itself as a leader in the transition to cleaner and more sustainable technologies, explained Alejandro Novoa, general manager of PACCAR Mexico   

The company’s productivity was demonstrated by reaching the 400,000th unit last August, a historic milestone that adds to the consolidation of its market share. By year-end, PACCAR projects a 36% market share in Class 8 and 47% in tractor-trailers.

In this context, DAF’s arrival in Mexico a year ago represented a change for the cab-over-engine market. DAF has established itself as a strategic opportunity to serve transportation segments that demand cutting-edge technology and improved safety.

The DAF XG has been awarded the International Truck of the Year Award in Europe, and its arrival in Mexico in 2026 is presented as DAF’s proposal to raise standards in the long-haul freight sector.

PACCAR Mexico celebrated the “PACCAR Experience” event , an initiative in which 80 attendees, including customers and dealers, participated in a tour of PACCAR’s technological development and innovation facilities in Washington , United States.

The participants visited key facilities in PACCAR’s value chain. The first part of the tour was at the Kenworth manufacturing plant in Renton , dedicated to the production of the W900 Legacy model and focused on highly specialized models, such as those used in mining and petrochemicals .

The second part of the tour was at the Technological Innovation Center, where new technologies, systems and applications are developed for Kenworth, DAF and Peterbilt trucks and tractors , and which is also one of the key facilities for the company.

To conclude the tour of Renton, the customers visited the PACCAR Distribution Center, which has an inventory of over 25,000 parts , and processes and ships an average of more than 6,000 orders daily to the Northwest United States and Canada.

On the second day of the tour, the group visited the PACCAR Technical Center (PTC) in Mt. Vernon, Washington. At the facility, dedicated to research and quality testing, the attendees toured the tracks designed to validate the performance, durability, and safety of PACCAR products .

The event ended with a day at the PTC test track, where guests were able to operate various truck models, experiencing their power , even with simulated loads.

The PACCAR Experience , held from October 21 to 24, offered a close-up look at the innovation and technology that position the company as a leader in transportation . The facilities, from the Kenworth plant to the Technical Center, highlight PACCAR’s commitment to quality and a vision for a sustainable and efficient future.

After more than a year of the DAF brand’s presence in Mexico, PACCAR Mexico  announced the appointment of  Jorge Álvaro Cañedo Taddei as the new DAF Sales Director for Mexico and Latin America .

In a statement, Alejandro Novoa, general manager of PACCAR Mexico, announced that in this new assignment, Cañedo Taddei will relocate to Mexico City , where he will assume responsibility for leading the marketing strategy for DAF units in Mexico and Latin America. In his new role, he will report directly to Tonathiu Venegas, which will strengthen the brand’s growth in the region.

Jorge Cañedo is a certified public accountant who graduated from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM) and has over 26 years of experience with PACCAR Mexico .

During his career at PACCAR, he has held various positions, including Regional Credit Manager, PFM Area Manager (PACCAR Financial Mexico), and PFM Dealer Credit Manager. For the past 11 years, he has served as Sales Director for Latin America, the last seven of which have been based in Santiago, Chile.

In this new position, Jorge Cañedo will report directly to Tonathiu Venegas , thus strengthening the company’s commercial strategy in the region.

In 2025, the 9th edition of the Kenworth DAF Metropolitan Golf Tournament was held , bringing together various customers, suppliers and interest groups that have accompanied this dealership at various times during its 65-year history .

From early on, various competitors gathered, equipped to hit their best shots and achieve the best score on the course, and more than one with the goal of winning the prizes awarded throughout the 18 holes.

At this edition, 66 customers attended the event, and more than 100 people were invited by Kenworth DAF Metropolitanos, where they had the opportunity to share the green, but also to exchange industry perspectives and market insights.

Adrián Luque, Marketing Director of PACCAR Mexico , stated that this 9th edition of the Kenworth DAF Metropolitan Tournament was the most attended . The executive emphasized that this type of event  is an opportunity to showcase the broadest portfolio of the industry in Mexico .

El cargo Kenworth DAF Metropolitan Hole-in-One; Golf Tournament Reaches Record Participation apareció primero en T21.

In the cumulative period from January to October 2024 , sales of cargo vehicles stood at 40,077 units , according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) , where the tractor-trailer class contributed 21,813 , an amount that represents an increase of 10.4%compared to the same cycle in 2023.

The numbers described above suggest that in 2024 the cargo vehicle industry could reach up to 42 thousand units in the cargo segment in retail sales, and in this scenario , Kenworth Mexicana , a subsidiary of PACCAR Mexico , anticipates taking advantage of these numbers.

At a press conference, Juan Leonardo Fiorentini , deputy general commercial director of PACCAR Mexico, explained that although 2024 began with a projection of 34 thousand units for the cargo segment, in the middle of the year it was modified to 37 thousand and recently it was placed towards 42 thousand units.

In Fiorentini’s view, the year has a certain pre-purchase effect due to the introduction of the new emissions standard (NOM-044) starting in 2025, and this, together with the issues of cargo demand, has resulted in better sales performance.

Tonathiu Venegas , commercial director for Mexico, explained that 2024 will be an exceptional year and that in the case of tractor trucks they will be above the industry, which is expected to grow by 12% , while Kenworth will do so by close to 14 percent .

According to Inegi data, Kenworth has displaced a total of 9,159 tractor-trailers in the cumulative total up to October , which represents an increase of 16%, while the industry’s growth is 10.4 percent.

By 2025, executives said that the industry could fall by double digits compared to 2024 levels, “but we will still have the second or third best level in recent years,” said Tonathiu Venegas, which is why there will be positive numbers.

In Juan Leonardo Fiorentini’s view, the adjustment in the industry will be based on three fundamental elements : “The first year of government does not always have the same speed as the last years of government; changes in emissions will have an effect on the market; and the third that we identify is the caution of transporters in the face of the start of President Trump’s administration in the United States.”

PACCAR Mexico defines human capital strategy in the commercial and engineering areas, with the objective of leading the company to growth and development. In a press release, Alejandro Novoa, general director of PACCAR Mexico, announced that Tonathiu Venegas was named commercial director Mexico , under his responsibility the areas of DAF sales , domestic sales, corporate accounts, sales engineering and commercial systems will operate.

In turn, Carlos Dávila was promoted as director of dealer development , after more than 17 years of upward trajectory in PACCAR Mexico, under his responsibility are the areas of dealer development, dealer training and development, service operations and planning, as well as service development.

Adrián Luque assumed the position of marketing director , responsible for the marketing, data analysis, pricing and Six Sigma areas of the commercial area.

PACCAR Mexico also appointed Araceli Bueno as director of sales operations . In her new position, Bueno will lead the wholesale and retail areas, including sales management, sales planning, traffic and logistics for the commercial area.

Together, the four executives have 84 years of experience at PACCAR, which confirms their experience and knowledge of the national market. In their new areas of performance, Tonathiu, Carlos Eduardo, Adrián and Araceli will report to Juan Leonardo Fiorentini, Deputy General Commercial Director.

On the other hand, PACCAR Mexico announced that Alejandro García will assume the position of sales director for Mexico , reporting directly to Tonathiu Venegas.

The company also reported that René Suárez will be the new director of the Mexicali plant . Suárez will report directly to Carlos F. Hernández Romero, deputy general director of operations.

Finally, Raúl Ayala was promoted to director of product engineering and will report directly to Alejandro Novoa Cárdenas, general manager of PACCAR Mexico.

The combined experience of García, Suárez and Ayala totals 49 years, which is a transcendental factor in the fulfillment of PACCAR Mexico’s objectives. “Alejandro Novoa and Juan Leonardo Fiorentini congratulated each of them for these appointments and extended their support in the new responsibilities they are about to develop, which will contribute to the success and development of PACCAR Mexico,” the statement said.
