The 2026 FIFA World Cup has boosted passenger traffic at Monterrey International Airport, operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) , registering a 5.5% increase in passenger traffic from June 1 to 21, 2026, compared to the same period last year.

According to the concessionaire, 153,075 passengers from or destined for outside the country passed through that air terminal during that cycle .

“Monterrey Airport continues to play a key role in the region’s connectivity, facilitating the arrival of national and international visitors and contributing to the positioning of Nuevo León as a globally relevant destination, confirming the opportunity of the investment of more than eight billion pesos (mdp) that we continue to implement to expand, modernize and transform the Monterrey air terminal into the air hub of northern Mexico,” stated Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of OMA.

He recalled that during that period the game between Japan and Tunisia was held, where the airport served 59,898 international passengers, 12.9% higher than the same period of the previous year, growth driven by the arrival of visitors, fans, work teams, media and business travelers linked to the economic and tourist activity generated by this global event.

“The extensive network of international routes operating from Monterrey, along with the recent addition of new destinations and frequencies, has allowed us to efficiently meet the demand of travelers arriving in the city during this period of high activity,” Dueñas emphasized.

OMA estimated that with two more World Cup games to be played in the coming weeks, including South Africa vs. Korea on June 24 and the round of 32 match between the first place in Group F and the second place in Group C on June 29, the expectation is that the influx of international travelers will continue to grow .

Currently, the airport maintains operations to more than 66 destinations, 26 of which are international, and continues to implement an investment and modernization program in infrastructure, technology, and passenger experience to meet the sustained growth of air demand and strengthen its operational capacity for the coming years.

El cargo World Cup triggers surge in passengers at Monterrey airport apareció primero en T21.

The airport groups of the Central North (OMA) and the Pacific (GAP) declared themselves ready to receive thousands of national and international visitors ahead of the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to OMA, while the construction of new infrastructure continues to advance, Monterrey Airport maintains continuous operation, serving approximately 16 million passengers annually and more than 130,000 air operations per year; in addition, it has strengthened its capabilities for a more efficient, safe, and agile operation for travelers.

“We are building the airport of the future without halting the airport of the present. We know that the construction may represent temporary adjustments for our users, but it is also the visible sign of a profound transformation that is already generating concrete benefits for those who travel through Monterrey,” said Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of Grupo OMA.

As part of this transformation, the airport is already operating with new technological tools that streamline passenger transit and strengthen security standards, such as self-service kiosks that multiply the positions for checking luggage in a couple of minutes.

Automatic doors that, through the QR code of the boarding pass, expedite access to the security checkpoints , biometric reading of passports in international arrivals and in collaboration with the National Institute of Migration (INM) , verify identity in real time and accept electronic passports from 30 countries.

In addition to a state-of-the-art Operational Control Center that concentrates technology, equipment and processes to monitor flights, aircraft, vehicles and passenger flow in real time, and allows for coordinated rapid responses to any contingency.

Meanwhile, HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX equipment with three-dimensional Computed Tomography (CT) technology, one of the most advanced airport screening solutions internationally , is now operational . This means passengers no longer need to remove laptops, liquids, gels, or electronic devices from their luggage during screening, speeding up the security checkpoints and improving the travel experience. This technology is already in place at the Terminal A screening checkpoint and will soon be implemented at Terminal C.

These works represent an investment of eight billion pesos (mdp) destined for the Monterrey International Airport between 2025 and 2030, as part of a multi-year program of more than 16 billion pesos for the entire OMA network.

In preparation for the World Cup tournament, the airport will enhance its signage and provide information kiosks to guide national and international visitors, in addition to the ongoing work of its Passenger Experience Committee on key operational processes.

“We continue to transform the travel experience in Monterrey with industry-leading infrastructure and technology. The World Cup is an important milestone, but this investment is designed for sustained growth in the coming years. Together with passengers, authorities, and partners, we are building the airport of the future: bigger, more comfortable, safer, and better connected,” Dueñas emphasized.

Meanwhile, GAP reported that Guadalajara International Airport is shaping up to be one of the main entry points for fans, delegations, and tourists arriving in the country during the World Cup, where the city will host four matches and a cultural and tourist agenda that will expand the flow of national and international travelers.

“This major football event represents a unique opportunity to showcase the operational capacity and long-term vision with which we have developed Guadalajara’s airport infrastructure. The investments made in recent years allow us to meet record demand and continue supporting the region’s economic and tourism growth,” stated Cryshtian Amador Lizardi, administrator of the Guadalajara Airport.

The upgrade of this airport terminal was part of the 2020-2024 Master Development Plan, in which GAP allocated more than 15 billion pesos for the airport’s modernization and expansion . Among the most significant projects are the construction of a second runway, 3,538 meters long; the expansion of the hangars to 45 positions; the renovation of 26,000 square meters of the terminal building; and the doubling of parking capacity.

These investments are complemented by operational measures implemented in the context of the world’s most important sporting event in football. Since June, vehicular access has been expanded to three lanes, a project designed to expedite entry times to the terminal and optimize traffic flow in one of the corridors with the highest passenger volume.

Meanwhile, the Jalisco government inaugurated Line 5 of the Mi Macro Airport system , one of the most significant mobility projects developed for this major football event. The electric transport system will connect the airport terminal with various strategic points in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area via three main routes, strengthening urban connectivity for visitors and residents.

Ahead of the opening ceremony, the national teams from South Korea, the Czech Republic, and Colombia arrived on charter flights and were processed under a special protocol that included immigration and customs controls on the tarmac, on-site baggage inspection with X-ray equipment, specialized handling of sports equipment, and enhanced security with canine units. Specialized airport personnel were also deployed to ensure efficient, safe, and coordinated processes during the teams’ arrival and transit within the airport facilities.

“With a renovated terminal, new access points, greater operational capacity and a strengthened mobility network, GAP arrives at this international football event with an infrastructure prepared to meet a historic demand and support the long-term development of the region,” it was emphasized.

Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) reported a 2.8% increase in its total revenue during the fourth quarter of 2025 (4Q25), while Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) registered no change compared to the same period in 2024

Based on data from its reports submitted to the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) , GAP stated that its revenues showed an increase driven mainly by the application in Mexico of the airport fees approved for the period 2025-2029, as well as by the opening of new routes.

Similarly, income from non-aeronautical services, that is, businesses operated directly by the company, grew by 262.9 million pesos (mdp), a 28.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024, driven by the consolidation of the cargo and bonded warehouse business , which contributed 129.2 million pesos, representing an increase of 37.4 percent.

Meanwhile, its net profit fell 17.4% year-on-year as a result of an increase in financial expenses, accrued interest, a loss due to currency fluctuations and an increase in taxes.

In Q4 2025, the 14 airports (including two in Jamaica) operated by GAP recorded a decrease of 0.9% compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.

GAP recorded a 23.2% increase in its total revenue during 2025 compared to 2024. Its net profit grew 12.7% during the past year, while passenger traffic increased 2.5%.

By 2026, the company expects an increase in passenger traffic of between 2% and 5%, as well as total revenue growth of between 8% and 11%, and EBITDA with an upward range of between 8% and 11%.

For its part, OMA detailed that its total revenues in the fourth quarter of 2025 amounted to 4,113 million pesos , compared to 4,115 million pesos in the same period last year.

Regarding OMA Cargo’s revenue, he specified that this segment increased 14.2% year-on-year .

Consolidated net profit in Q4 2025 was 1,223 million pesos, an increase of 3.6% compared to the same quarter of 2024.

Total passenger traffic was 7.5 million, a 6% year-on-year increase , due to the flow of domestic (85.2%) and international (14.8%) travelers

For the year 2025, OMA reported revenues of 15.964 billion pesos, a 5.9% increase compared to 2024. Adjusted EBITDA was 10.167 billion pesos in 2025, a 12.1% increase compared to 2024. Net income totaled 5.365 billion pesos, representing an 8.7% year-over-year increase.

El cargo GAP reports revenue increase in Q4 2025; OMA closes unchanged apareció primero en T21.

The airport groups of the Central North (OMA) and the Pacific (GAP) reported growth of 6% and 1.2%, respectively , in passenger traffic during January 2026 compared to the same month of 2025.

According to its bulletin sent to the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) , OMA reported that it transported 2,309,784 passengers in the first month of 2026 compared to the 2,178,507 passengers it transported in the same period of 2025.

Grupo Financiero Monex highlighted that this increase is due to a greater appetite for leisure, family and business travel worldwide, specifically due to nearshoring (relocation of production lines) in Mexico, particularly in the northern region of the country.

OMA specified that domestic passenger traffic increased by 7%, rising from 1,797,002 in January 2025 to 1,922,834 in January 2026. International passenger traffic grew by 1.4%, increasing from 381,505 passengers in January 2025 to 386,950 passengers in January 2026.

“We believe that OMA’s traffic performance during the first month of the year was positive, as it maintains a favorable performance in the domestic segment, driven by Monterrey, as well as a resilient performance in the international sector,” noted Grupo Financiero Monex.

In this regard, Monex emphasized that during 2026 the focus will be on performance at the operating cash flow level , the attractiveness of nearshoring in the business segment, local and international economic performance, as well as the synergies generated during the World Cup.

Meanwhile, the 12 Mexican airports managed by GAP registered an increase of 1.2% in January 2026 , driven by a good performance of domestic traffic, which mitigated the negative performance in international traffic.

The airports of Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta saw increases of 3.6% and 2.6%, respectively, while the airfields of Tijuana and Los Cabos decreased by 4.2% and 0.3%, respectively.

“It is important to note that, during 2025, the Guadalajara airport showed strong progress, positioning itself as the second most important airport for domestic operations nationwide. Meanwhile, Tijuana’s performance was more modest; however, it remains among the top five airports for domestic traffic in Mexico,” explained VALMEX Casa de Bolsa .

By 2026, it estimated greater dynamism in domestic operations , due to better operation by airlines as they progress with the Pratt & Whitney engine overhaul process , in addition to the strong connectivity that exists between the airports of Guadalajara and Tijuana with the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) , which remains the main airport in Mexico.

“Regarding international operations, we believe that one factor that affected operations was Winter Storm Fern, which caused the cancellation of more than 13,000 flights in the United States. We also believe that travelers from the United States may remain cautious due to the more restrictive immigration policies implemented by the Trump administration,” he explained.

However, in the medium term, it projected improved dynamics in international operations as migration concerns between the United States and Mexico dissipate.

El cargo OMA and GAP, with “good flight” in passenger traffic during January apareció primero en T21.

The Central North (OMA) and Pacific (GAP) airport groups reported increases in passenger traffic in 2025 compared to 2024, while the Southeast (Asur) group showed a year-on-year decrease.

According to its report sent to the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) , Asur transported 40 million 595 thousand 729 users last year, which meant a decrease of 2% compared to 2024, when it transported 41 million 420 thousand 330 travelers.

GAP went from 62 million 156 thousand 300 passengers in 2024 to 63 million 685 thousand 700 in 2025, an increase of 2.5% in the period, driven by the national market, where it registered an increase of 5.8% by handling 36 million 444 thousand 700 travelers.

In international traffic, the concessionaire of 12 airports in the country went from 27 million 712 thousand 500 to 27 million 241 thousand passengers, which translated into a reduction of 1.7 percent.

OMA indicated that during 2024 it transported 26 million 510 thousand 498 passengers and for 2025 it transported 28 million 750 thousand 694, which represented a growth of 8.5% year-on-year.

“From our perspective, GAP and OMA are the most attractive from a fundamental standpoint, as they should offer better synergies due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Grupo Financiero Monex highlighted in a statement.

Meanwhile, Volaris reported to the BMV that its traffic in 2025 was 30,995,000 passengers , a 5.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024. In December, passenger numbers rose from 2,761,000 to 2,961,000, a 7.2% year-over-year increase.

“In December, demand in our markets behaved in line with historical seasonality, maintaining the recovery trend in VFR traffic in the cross-border market. In the domestic market, we operated less than planned due to adverse weather conditions that persisted for an extended period at our main hub airport in Tijuana, impacting our entire network. Despite these disruptions, we began 2026 well-positioned, focused on flexibility, execution, and value for our passengers,” stated Enrique Beltranena, CEO of Volaris.

An analysis by  VALMEX Casa de Bolsa considered that the report for the last month of 2025, the airline reflected a positive trend with signs of acceleration, both in national and international operations.

“Regarding the load factor, a deeper contraction was observed than previously reported; however, it is important to note that the airline’s load factor remains in line with its historical average, in addition to being above the average of national airlines,” he emphasized.

Starting October 26, Avianca announced that it will land directly in Monterrey, Nuevo León , for the first time, connecting the Mexican city with Bogotá, Colombia .

“The opening of this direct route strengthens Monterrey’s position as a strategic link between northern Mexico and Latin America. We celebrate this partnership with Avianca, which promotes connectivity and regional development,” said Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA) .

According to the airline, the flights will be operated on Airbus A320 aircraft with capacity for 180 passengers , representing a weekly offering of more than 1,400 seats. The route will be available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

“Today we celebrate the opening of Monterrey as a new destination with direct connections to Bogotá, offering travelers more than 1,400 seats per week between the two destinations. This adds to the eight international routes we already operate in Mexico,” said Frederico Pedreira, CEO of Avianca.

He noted that in the first half of the year alone, they have transported more than 579,000 travelers to and from Mexico on more than 4,400 flights . “With this new operation, we want to continue providing new connectivity opportunities for Mexicans to more than 80 destinations on our route network in the Americas and Europe.”

Maricarmen Martínez Villarreal, head of the Nuevo León Tourism Secretariat , emphasized that this flight strengthens the state’s international connectivity and opens new opportunities for tourism, business, and culture between Mexico and Colombia. “In Nuevo León, we are promoting strategic alliances that will position us as a key destination in Latin America leading up to the 2026 World Cup.”

Avianca currently  has eight routes and 84 weekly frequencies connecting its customers to destinations in Mexico. With the launch of Monterrey as a new destination, this will increase to nine routes and 88 weekly frequencies.

Avianca operates routes to and from this country from Bogotá to Mexico City and Cancún, and, since October, from Monterrey; and from Medellín to Mexico City and Cancún.

Additionally, it connects San José to Mexico City, Guatemala to Cancún, and from San Salvador to Mexico City and Cancún.

Given the importance of air cargo in Mexico, it is necessary to develop a strategic plan to strengthen this sector , said the Airports Council International for Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC) .

“Air cargo is undoubtedly important, and we must also support it and develop its plans. I understand that Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) handles all the pure cargo aircraft, but we must work together with other types of aircraft and other airlines,” emphasized Rafael Echevarne, director general of ACI-LAC.

Echevarne indicated that Querétaro International Airport (AIQ) is a good example of what is needed in this segment , while AIFA is developing as the country’s largest cargo hub.

“The important thing is to ensure that each airport has the necessary conditions for economic activity and development independently, with the support of regional, state, and local authorities, so that there are no barriers to cargo development,” he stated in an interview.

It’s worth remembering that last April, ACI-LAC announced its ranking of the 10 airports with the most cargo in Latin America and the Caribbean for 2024, with AIFA ranking fourth, behind only El Dorado in Colombia; Guarulhos in Brazil; and Arturo Merino Benítez in Chile.

Mexico City International Airport (AICM) ranked eighth, despite the presidential decree ending dedicated cargo at this facility.

GAP and OMA, with plans to boost cargo

Meanwhile, Ricardo Dueñas, general director of Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA) , explained that the Monterrey Airport is expanding its warehouse because they expect growth in both air and ground cargo.

“We see nearshoring (relocation of production lines) as strong. We see it going forward, and we continue to invest in that growth,” Dueñas emphasized.

For his part, Raúl Revuelta, general manager of Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) , agreed that nearshoring and the reorganization of international trade will boost the growth of air freight movement, and they are therefore working to provide more infrastructure for this segment, especially in Guadalajara, Jalisco.

“We continue to expand. Five more cargo platforms are under construction in Guadalajara, all of which are fully cargo-powered. We continue to prepare the infrastructure. We firmly believe that Mexico will ultimately benefit greatly from nearshoring and the reorganization of international trade that is taking place, and we must have the infrastructure ready,” he stated.

In this regard, Revuelta stated that the group is being very proactive in this sector, which is why they purchased GWTC , which operates the bonded warehouses at the Guadalajara and Puebla airports.

Regarding any impact on cargo movement due to the U.S. tariff policy, he indicated that no decline has been recorded so far, due to the changes announced by the U.S. government regarding the extensions it has granted.

“The reality is that you can’t see it. There have been so many changes in the effective date of the tariffs that you don’t see it in cargo today. Today, I would say cargo is growing at a good pace; we’re not seeing any specific slowdown,” he stressed.

To boost and strengthen the growth of regional airports, they need certain subsidies, although this requires modifying their concession titles, according to specialists from the Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) and the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) .

Raúl Revuelta, director of GAP, commented that these types of subsidies are being offered between companies and could take the form, for example, of a discount on a route like Los Mochis-Manzanillo.

“It’s a regulatory issue. Currently, airport group concessions are individual and don’t allow for support. This is defined by the concession title and isn’t a matter of regulation. It’s about making a clear proposal that could be applicable to any group, both private and public,” he emphasized.

In an interview following his participation in ACI Airport Day Mexico , he stated that this is an issue being analyzed by concessionaires in the country.

Ricardo Dueñas, director of OMA, explained that this type of subsidy would not be provided by the government, but that the country’s largest airports could serve as a lever to boost smaller infrastructure .

“We have to work together; all the elements are on the table to be able to do this. It’s a job for the airlines and the airport groups to maintain very good communication, but the elements are there to be able to detonate them,” he said.

In this regard, he specified that of the 13 airports managed and operated by OMA, Monterrey would be the most suitable, as it is the largest in the group and accounts for almost half of its total traffic.

Meanwhile, Vice Admiral Eric Mario Barrera, technical corporate director of the Marina Airport Group, highlighted the need to invest in airport infrastructure, but also to encourage airlines to land there.

“Mexico has a lot of room for regional aviation, and we’re not giving it enough importance. We have 60 airports, but airlines don’t reach all of them,” he emphasized.

David Sandoval Martínez, deputy general manager of Grupo Mundo Maya Airports , mentioned that in his case the development of incentives was decisive for the arrival of airlines.

He explained that these types of incentives are granted annually , and have thereby boosted regional aviation; he also indicated that the incentives apply to airport services, parking, aprons, among others.

“We identified this need, especially in a jungle region. The connectivity and commitment of governments generates a focus of attention, and although the results were positive, the momentum and incentives are there; they were developed over a three-year period,” he noted.

American Airlines has begun flying between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Tampico, Tamaulipas, representing a strategic step to strengthen air connectivity in the region.

“We are pleased to welcome this new service from Tampico to DFW, providing travelers with a world-class experience and access to a vast network of connections. This new route is the 27th destination in Mexico served from DFW Airport, consolidating Mexico as our largest international market,” said Milton de la Paz, Vice President of Airline Relations and Cargo Business Development at DFW.

The flight will be operated by an Embraer 170 aircraft with capacity for 65 passengers. The cabin configuration includes 12 seats in Business Class and 53 in Economy Class.

“American Airlines has been a strategic partner for decades, and we recognize its commitment and investment to expand connectivity at Tampico International Airport. With this new route, it reinforces its position as the largest operator of international routes at our airports, now totaling 14 international connections,” said Abelardo Muñoz, Director of Traffic Development at Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA) .

He recalled that in the last five years, the company and airport concessionaire has invested nearly 300 million pesos in works for the maintenance and improvement of the operational infrastructure, including rehabilitation of runways, platforms, taxiways and service roads, in addition to improvements in equipment to reinforce passenger safety.

These investments, he said, will continue in the coming years with the aim of continuing to guarantee user satisfaction and the sustainable growth of the airport.

El cargo American Airlines connects Dallas with Tampico apareció primero en T21.

The airport groups of the Pacific (GAP) , North Central (OMA) and Southeast (Asur) registered growth in their income for 2024, despite the decline in passenger movement.

The concessionaires stated that the increase in their income is due to the aeronautical and non-aeronautical income they provide, such as restaurants, VIP lounges and shops, among others, within their airports.

GAP mentioned in its report sent to the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) that it increased its income by 1.2% during the last year compared to the same period in 2023, going from 33,224 million pesos to 33,614 million pesos.

However, revenues at Mexico’s airports decreased by 346.1 million pesos, or 2.1%, in the period from January to December year-on-year, mainly due to a 1% reduction in passenger traffic and a 92.5% compliance rate.

However, its net profit fell by 8.4% because it ended the year with 8,875 million pesos compared to 9,689 million pesos in the period compared.

Regarding passenger movement, it reported a 2.1% drop, transporting 62 million 156 thousand users, compared to 63 million 461 thousand in 2023.

For its part, OMA, the concessionaire of 13 airports in the country, recorded an annual increase of 4.3% in its revenues in 2024 , going from 14 million 457 thousand pesos to 15 million 073 pesos; as well as an adjusted EBITDA that reached 9 thousand 069 million pesos, maintaining the level of 2023.

He said diversification activities increased by 28%, mainly due to growth in revenues from industrial services and hotel services.

Passenger traffic was reduced by 1.2% as it received 26 million 510 thousand users against the 26 million 845 thousand in 2023, this derived from the 3.5% decrease in the offer of seats by the airlines.

Asur reported a 21.8% increase in its total revenues for 2024 , from 19 million 027 thousand 902 pesos to 23 million 168 thousand 690 pesos. Revenues for the fourth quarter of that year alone increased by 31.2% year-on-year, mainly due to the results of the approval of the Master Development Plan.

While its net profit for the mentioned period was 11 million 632 thousand 439 pesos compared to eight million 708 thousand 481 pesos in 2023, which translated into an increase of 33.6 percent.

Meanwhile, the number of users moved went from 43 million 754 thousand to 41 million 645 thousand, which represented a 4.8% decrease year-on-year.

Domestic traffic ended at 19 million 808 thousand 950 passengers, compared to 21 million 272 thousand 863 passengers in 2023, a drop of 6.9%; meanwhile, international traffic fell 2.6%, going from 22 million 195 thousand 121 to 21 million 611 thousand 380 users.
