In 2020, the decline in maneuvers for the automotive industry began at the port of Tuxpan , specifically in the movement of loading or unloading new cars.

Subsequent years showed no improvement. But his statistics could change this year .

In the first nine months of 2024, this Veracruz port has operated 72,841 new vehicles , mostly imported, or 183.4% more than in the same period of 2023 when it only registered 25,701 cars, according to data from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM) of the Ministry of the Navy .

This year’s figure already exceeds the 45,166 cars registered by the port of Tuxpan in all of 2023.

He also noted that before 2024, operations in previous years had focused mainly on exports.

The main port operator is Tuxpan Port Terminal (TPT) , owned by SSA Marine México , which has managed the container terminal since 2016, but where it can also operate general cargo and Roll on-Roll off (RoRo) cargo for the automotive industry.

TPT has a static capacity of 2,050 units and a dynamic capacity of 74,825 units per year , according to the port terminal’s website.

Tuxpan is not the only Mexican port where this company, belonging to the American Carrix Group , has invested in terminals specialized in the handling of new cars .

In Lázaro Cárdenas (Pacific) and in Veracruz (Gulf of Mexico) is where an automotive “gold mine” has been found , as these are the main ports in the country with operations for the automotive industry and where a large volume of zero kilometer units are handled.

Pacific ports have witnessed an increase in the import of vehicles of Asian origin, mainly Lázaro Cárdenas and Mazatlán.

SSA Marine México has been present in the country since 1994. It arrived at the dawn of the newly installed Ports Law (1993).

But Tuxpan only handled 6.6% of all the vehicles that the ports in the Gulf of Mexico operated in their entirety in the period January-September 2024.

All of them add up to one million 097 thousand 709 vehicles until last September , that is, 6.7% more than in the same period of 2023.

Meanwhile, port statistics indicate that, from January to September of this year, all ports totaled 1,742,940 units (+4.4% at an annual rate).

The ports of Altamira and Mazatlán have taken a greater participation in port maneuvers for the automotive industry in terms of finished vehicles for import and export.

Altamira registers an advance of 52.1% in the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year, with 209 thousand 265 units operated, mostly for shipments abroad (205 thousand 664 units), according to data from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM) , of the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) .

Taking into account that the ports on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico operated 581,593 vehicles in the reference period, Altamira had a participation of 35.9%, while last year it was 26.6 percent.

Meanwhile, the port of Mazatlán has operated 78,249 units in the period January-May 2024, an annual growth of 73.1 percent.

Contrary to Altamira, most of the vehicles that Mazatlán operated were in import services, with 75,826 units .

The units that were maneuvered in Mazatlán in the first five months of the year give it a share of 22.9% with respect to the total registered by the Mexican Pacific ports, while last year it was barely 12.9 percent.

Both ports have served as an outlet for other ports that are traditionally used by shipping and automotive lines for the embarkation or disembarkation of new units, such as Veracruz or Lázaro Cárdenas, and which have even recorded negative numbers.

The first of them, Veracruz, added 330,343 vehicles in the reference period, an annual decline of 11.7 percent. The second, Lázaro Cárdenas, registered 261,742 units or 13.3% less.

In total, Mexican ports have added 922,623 units from January to May 2024 , with an annual increase of 6.9 percent.

According to statistics from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) , of the 585,721 new units that have been marketed in Mexico in the first five months of this year, 66.4% of them have been imported into the country ; a similar proportion was observed in sales for all of 2023.

The massive importation of new automobiles by maritime means that Mexico has experienced has seen a pronounced slowdown in the Gulf of Mexico.

The ports along this coastline totaled 84,120 imported units in the first four months of this year, a decrease of 23.7% compared to the same period last year, according to statistics from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM).

The port of Veracruz, the most important in the Gulf of Mexico in this activity, handled 81,078 units or 20.9% less, according to the comparison periods.

Meanwhile, Altamira port has only operated three thousand and forty-two units in imports (-49.9%).

On the Pacific side, a different story is told. On that coastline, 192,817 units were handled in imports during the January-April period of this year, representing a year-on-year increase of 13.4 percent.

Here, only the port of Lázaro Cárdenas is the exception, as it has experienced a 7% decrease in the review period, with 132,221 new imported units.

Mazatlán, on the other hand, totaled 59,557 imported units or 119% more; while Manzanillo, with just one thousand and thirty-nine imported automobiles, has shown a growth of 82.6 percent.

In total, from January to April of this year, all ports in the country have totaled 276,937 units in import service, barely 1.2% less than in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, in export services, the country’s ports have taken the fast lane. In the first four months of this year, 458,521 units have been sent abroad, 21.2% more than in the same period last year.

Combining import and export maneuvers, Mexican ports have totaled 735,458 new units between January and April 2024, representing an advancement of 11.7% over the same cycle in 2023.
