The trucking industry in Mexico faces a scenario of multiple challenges, both operational, structural, and systemic, which is why companies must find the tools that will improve their results.

In this context, Motive is strengthening its technological offering to respond to the specific needs of Mexican trucking, said Omar Camacho, General Manager of the company in Mexico, in an interview with T21.

From Camacho’s perspective, many clients begin by adopting tools for road safety or property security, but later incorporate new functions related to fleet management, performance analysis, operational intelligence, and asset management. During its annual event, Motive unveiled new solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI) and on-device processing capabilities (Edge AI), designed to respond in real time to the challenges facing the industry.

“We are seeing a very complex, almost crisis-like scenario. It is a very resilient industry, but there is a significant increase in accidents, thefts and costs, in addition to a shortage of operators that is approaching 100,000,” said Omar Camacho, CEO of Motive, in an interview with T21.

The company presented solutions, including AI Dashcam Plus and AI Omnicam Plus , devices equipped with Edge AI, which allows for the interpretation of events and the generation of responses without the need to send information to the cloud.

It also announced Atlas , a conversational AI interface through which operators can interact with the system and receive real-time recommendations regarding traffic jams, risk zones, or emergency situations.

“We are seeing an increase of nearly 20% in accidents compared to last year, and we estimate a similar increase for next year. Today we have almost 16,000 registered robberies, and all of this creates a vicious cycle that could force many companies out of the market,” he warned.

Camacho explained that, given this scenario, fleets require integrated solutions capable of reacting in real time.

“Organized crime uses cutting-edge technology, and many carriers continue to operate with isolated systems. What we are proposing is a comprehensive platform that responds to these challenges,” he said.

According to the executive, some implementations have managed to reduce accidents by up to 80% in the first six months , as well as decrease fuel consumption by up to 30% and reduce insurance costs.

From a raid to an expansion

One of Motive’s success stories is Grupo ADET , a company specializing in last mile delivery for e-commerce clients such as Mercado Libre and Amazon.

Its CEO, Donaji Alvarado, explained that the company was founded almost four years ago with the conviction that technology should be a central part of the business.

“We worked at a company where tractor-trailers would disappear and we’d find out three days later. We’d say, ‘How is it possible that this is still happening?’ From the beginning, we knew we needed GPS, cameras, and monitoring tools,” he recalled.

After operating with another provider, Grupo ADET adopted Motive’s solutions and currently none of its units go on the road without monitoring and telemetry devices.

The executive recounted that, during the first operations with Mercado Libre in Naucalpan, one of their vehicles was robbed. However, the panic button and real-time monitoring allowed them to alert the control center and coordinate a response with the authorities.

“The monitoring team found out immediately, called the police, and they arrived at the house where the merchandise was located. They uncovered a major network involving stolen vehicles and arrested the group. Since then, we haven’t had any more robberies in that area, whereas before there was one per month,” he explained.

The incident ended up becoming a growth opportunity .

“We took all the evidence to the client, and from there we experienced enormous growth. We went from operating about 10 units to nearly 160 with that client. If that hadn’t happened, we probably wouldn’t be where we are today,” he said.

The last mile remains under pressure

Alvarado noted that the recent Hot Sale left a sustained demand for deliveries during June, forcing companies to increase their capacity by up to 50% , in an environment where hiring staff has become increasingly competitive.

“Such rapid growth is a financial challenge and also a human capital challenge, because all last-mile companies are looking for operators and staff at the same time,” he commented.

In the last two months, Grupo ADET increased its fleet by between 30% and 40% and is currently in a consolidation phase to take full advantage of the technological tools already available, including operator training solutions.

“Visibility is everything. It helps us in human resources, finance, and operations. There comes a point where it’s essential to have a system that allows you to know where all the units are and what’s happening with them,” he stated.

For Motive, artificial intelligence and real-time reaction capabilities will be key to facing the challenges that threaten road transport today.

“We want to have a greater impact on what really matters to our customers: reducing accidents, decreasing theft, improving productivity, and helping to address the operator shortage,” Camacho concluded.

That was the starting point for a conversation that went beyond bridges and sensors: a dialogue about how to break down the bureaucratic, cultural, and technological barriers that still hinder the digital transformation of transportation in Mexico.

For Juan Carlos Villa , Manager of International Trade and Border Transportation at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute , the problem lies not only in the infrastructure, but in the lack of technological integration between Mexico and the United States.

He explained that although there are more than 26 border crossings, only six account for 80% of cargo movement , which generates delays, high logistics costs, and a significant environmental impact.

“The inspection process is long and confusing; projects take up to 10 years to complete. That’s why technology is the most viable option,” he warned.

Among the solutions already being implemented, he highlighted the use of RFID, Bluetooth, computer vision, license plate readers (ALPR), and GPS data to measure crossing times and analyze flow patterns. These tools allow for calculating delays, congestion, and actual wait times, using historical and real-time information.

The goal, he said, is to build “smart border ports” that integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and shared databases, where information is useful to authorities, shippers, and planners alike.

“The approach must be binational. It’s not just about crossing the line, but about monitoring shipments from origin to destination, with clear metrics that indicate whether we’re truly improving,” Villa emphasized.

AI is no longer a promise

For his part, Omar Camacho , CEO of Motive , stated that AI-based technology has ceased to be a future promise and has become an immediate tool for security, productivity, and efficiency.

“We believe a world without accidents is possible,” he stated. He said the systems detect risky behavior and operator fatigue through computer vision and machine learning models .

Cheaper technology, more valuable data

The panel also agreed that technology costs are trending downward, but their true value depends on how data is used. “It’s getting cheaper to implement technology, but you have to know how to analyze the information,” Villa said.

Camacho added that the benefit should not be measured solely in cost reduction, but in competitiveness: “Technology is not adopted to save, but to survive.”

Among the most illustrative examples, Camacho mentioned how Artificial Intelligence could prevent tragedies such as the explosion of an LP gas pipeline in Iztapalapa , by detecting risk conditions, fatigue or excessive speed.

He also spoke about the use of digital traceability to combat fiscal huachicol, allowing verification of the origin, destination, and authenticity of hydrocarbon cargoes.

The conversation concluded with a thought-provoking reflection: technological success depends on balancing three factors: people , process, and technology.

At the event, experts mentioned that the future of transportation isn’t built solely on innovation, but on uncomfortable conversations, listening to experiences, and recognizing mistakes.

“You can have the best technology in the world, but if you don’t have safety programs that actually change behavior, you’re not going to get the results you want,” said Jim Higby, Lead Safety and Compliance Strategy at Motive , during the event .

The figures are alarming, and they also increase when we talk about the fact that  1.9 million people in the world lose their lives due to traffic accidents, according to a United Nations report , and the situation does not improve if the figures are delved into Mexico, since, according to the Aleatica Road Safety Monitor , there are 15,674 deaths in 2022 alone due to this type of accident.

In this sense, digitalization and the use of technologies for transportation safety gain relevance.

For example, Jaimie Weinberger , a sales engineer at Motive, mentioned a common reality among fleet managers: a reliance on spreadsheets.

“Excel is great until it isn’t,” he said.

He explained that many managers must become impromptu data scientists to answer basic questions about their operations.

This manual work, which includes downloading multiple spreadsheets and spending hours generating reports, means that key tasks such as driver training, preventive maintenance planning, and cross-departmental collaboration fall by the wayside.

Emily Parsons , Senior Product Manager at Motive, added that the goal of Motive Analytics is to simplify access to data without requiring advanced technical knowledge.

With this solution, users can view events such as violations, maintenance, or safety by driver or vehicle type , with the ability to edit and share reports instantly.

Michael O’Neil , Project Manager at Reliable Carriers , a customer and user of the system, shared how it has transformed his team’s work.

“It’s no longer about manually creating reports and spending hours combining data. Now everything is at our fingertips, from truck routes to speeding violations,” he said.

He also highlighted that other areas such as maintenance and finance are now also using the tool.

One of the biggest benefits, he said, has been improving the driver coaching experience.

“Recently, a driver received a complaint. We were able to review the video and all the associated data, and that opened the door to a positive conversation. The driver even asked how to improve. Now we have data that helps us grow, not just penalize us,” he said.

During the panel Shifting Gears: Navigating the Changing Regulatory Landscape at Motive Vision 2025 , experts discussed potential regulatory changes that could come with the new U.S. presidential administration, as well as current efforts to improve safety and efficiency in the industry.

Travis Baskin, head of Regulatory Affairs at Motive , addressed the impact of the change in administration on the regulatory agenda , particularly at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) .

Sean Garney, co-principal of Scopelitis Transportation Consulting , explained that while a confirmed administrator has not yet been named, the new administration is expected to continue a more deregulatory approach, focusing on streamlining existing rules rather than introducing new ones.

He also highlighted that the latest revisions to the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) were well received and could help improve visibility and equity in carrier safety scores.

For his part, Matt Camden, director of the Heavy Vehicle Safety Division at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, stressed that while political priorities may play a role, the FMCSA’s research agenda tends to remain stable due to the long-term nature of the studies; however, there is a growing focus on data collection that allows for greater flexibility for carriers .

One of the notable studies is one that evaluates the impact of driver detention times at loading and unloading facilities.

This project, funded by the FMCSA and developed by VTTI and Motive, seeks to understand how these delays affect safety, schedule compliance, and operational performance.

Garney noted that while the study’s results don’t guarantee immediate changes, they can provide tools to justify future improvements or regulatory adjustments.

“We all know that detention is a problem, but we need data that shows how large the impact is,” he said.

Baskin emphasized the need to involve all stakeholders in the logistics chain to address the problem of downtime.

“We are at the mercy of the shippers. Neither the brokers, nor the receivers, nor the shippers themselves fully assume their responsibility,” he noted.

To address this situation, he proposes using existing data to identify patterns and hold the appropriate actors accountable.

Deregulation and innovation from the FMCSA

On the other hand, Matt Camden stressed that one of the current priorities is to deregulate without compromising security .

“The Department of Transportation has asked for ideas to eliminate regulations, and many are already participating,” he said.

He stated that the administration has an opportunity to innovate with creative and industry-savvy officials, and suggested that the random drug testing rate could be reduced from 50% to 25%, given that positivity rates have been below 1% for two consecutive years.

“It would be a significant reduction in the regulatory burden,” Camden said.

Although flexibility is a priority, experts agreed that the focus on security will not disappear.

“The DOT and FMCSA will remain committed to keeping carriers and operations safe,” said Matt Camden.

In this regard, Sean Garney anticipates greater regulatory efficiency with the possible confirmation of Derek Barrs as FMCSA administrator.

“Derek is already deeply immersed in the industry, so we won’t have to start from scratch,” he explained.

He compared this potential continuity to the previous chaos, where new administrators lacked understanding of key programs like the CSA, delaying important decisions.

He also mentioned that the new “10:1” regulatory model (one new regulation requires eliminating ten existing ones) represents a major challenge, but also an opportunity to do more with less.

Camden, on the other hand, expressed concern about whether the FMCSA will be able to keep up with the pace of innovation.

Sean Garney responded with an example: the study the agency is conducting to understand how autonomous vehicles should interact with police .

“This month we’ll see driverless vehicles operating in Texas, and we still don’t know how the police will react,” he warned.

Matt Camden also highlighted the value of big data and platforms like Motive.

“Before, we needed you to search for the records; now the information is already there,” he said.

This availability allows researchers to work with real-world data to improve policies without increasing the operational burden on carriers.

Among the adjustments that could be coming soon, Sean Garney mentioned greater flexibility in the CDL testing process, changes to the length of mandatory retention for certain records, improvements to the DataQs appeals process (FMCSA’s system), and a review of roadside warning device regulations, prompted by a lack of prior research.

“For years, the FMCSA was the expert who guided us. But now, the industry is mature. The real experts are in this room. The government should help, but also let us lead,” he asserted.
