Mexico’s commercial sector showed positive results last July, both for wholesale and retail businesses, which saw monthly revenue growth, according to the Monthly Survey of Commercial Enterprises (EMEC) .

According to the survey, conducted by the  National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , revenue from the supply of goods and services in wholesale trade increased by  3% monthly. The number of employees in this sector fell by 0.2%, while average real wages decreased by 0.2% in July 2025.

Retail trade recorded a  0.1% increase in revenue. Meanwhile, employed personnel and average real wages fell 0.3% monthly.

In their annual measurement, wholesale retailers saw a 6.5% slowdown in total revenue, a 0.7% increase in employed personnel, and a 0.1% decline in wages.

Meanwhile, retail businesses reported a 2.2% increase in revenue from the supply of goods and services; the number of employees decreased by 0.2%, and average real wages grew by 6.8% annually in the seventh month of the year.

The  wholesale activity sectors and subsectors showed a decrease in supply revenue compared to July 2024.

Trucks and new parts and accessories for cars, vans, and trucks registered the largest decline, at 11.5 percent. Meanwhile, groceries, food, beverages, ice, and tobacco  remained unchanged during the period.

In turn, the sectors and subsectors with the highest revenue in retail trade were exclusively through the internet, printed catalogs, television, and similar services, with a 20.7% increase; household goods, computers, and interior items, with 5.7%; and motor vehicles, spare parts, fuels, and lubricants, with 3.4%.

These figures come amid a slowdown in inflation, with the  National Consumer Price Index (NCPI)  reaching an annual rate of  3.51%  in July 2025.

According to an analysis by  Grupo Financiero Ve por Más (BX+) , although inflation has continued to decline, with a slight increase in August to 3.57%, there are still upside risks and significant uncertainty surrounding the outlook, particularly due to external factors such as the tariffs imposed by the United States.

The slowdown in the Mexican economy impacted a decline in the Mexican commercial sector, resulting in low demand for goods and services last June, both in wholesale and retail trade.

According to the  Monthly Survey of Commercial Enterprises (EMEC) conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , revenue from the supply of goods and services in wholesale trade fell 2.3% monthly  in the sixth month of 2025.  Employment  and  average real wages in this sector also slowed to 0.5% during the period.

Retail trade revenue   fell 0.4%, while total employed personnel decreased 0.2%. Average real wages increased 1.7% monthly.

In their annual measurement, wholesale retailers saw a 9.3% decline in revenue, a 1.2% increase in workforce, and a 0.8% increase in average real wages.

Retail businesses, meanwhile, reported a 2.3% increase in revenue from the supply of goods and services; the number of employees increased by 0.2%, and average real wages grew by 6.9% year-over-year.

All wholesale activity sectors and subsectors showed a decrease in supply revenue compared to June 2024.

Trucks and new parts and spare parts for cars, vans, and trucks were among those that contracted the most, down 12.4 percent. This was followed by agricultural and forestry raw materials, raw materials for industry, and waste materials, which fell 12.2 percent.

On the other hand, the sectors and subsectors with the highest revenue in retail trade  were  exclusively through the internet, with printed catalogs, television, and similar items  at 50.6 percent, followed by  stationery, recreational items, and other personal items,  with an increase of 11.3 percent.

According to an analysis by  Grupo Financiero Ve por Más (BX+) , consumer confidence remains cautious due to the economic uncertainty caused by tariffs around the world, although it estimated that some components related to direct consumer decisions appear to be improving.

Wholesale and retail trade are a fundamental part of Mexico’s consumption dynamics, distribution of goods, and economic growth, making them a key factor for other sectors such as employment.

In May 2025, the performance of the commercial sector in Mexico had mixed results, according to the results of the Monthly Survey of Commercial Companies (EMEC) , which revealed a decrease in wholesale trade and a growth in retail trade at a monthly rate.

According to the survey, conducted by the  National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , revenue from the supply of goods and services in wholesale trade showed a monthly decline of 2.2 percent .

Employment in this sector fell 0.1%, while average wages increased 0.1% monthly in the fifth month of the year.

Meanwhile, retail trade saw a 1.8% increase in revenue. It also saw a 0.1% increase in the workforce; however, average real wages fell 0.1% monthly.

In their annual measurement, wholesale retailers saw a  7.8% slowdown in total revenue. They also recorded a 3% increase in employed personnel and a 1.8% increase in average real wages.

During the reference period, retail businesses reported a  2.5% increase  in revenue from the supply of goods and services; the number of employees increased by 0.7%, and average real wages grew by 5.4% annually.

Most wholesale sectors and subsectors  showed a decrease in supply revenue compared to May 2024.

Agricultural and forestry raw materials, industrial raw materials, and waste materials saw the greatest decline, with 13.5%; this was followed by  textiles and footwear , with a drop of 11.7%, and trucks and new parts and spare parts for cars, vans, and trucks , with a drop of 7.2%.

The sectors and subsectors with the highest revenue in retail trade were exclusively through the Internet, and printed catalogs, television and similar , with 9.6%, followed by stationery, recreational and other personal use items , with an increase of 9.5%, and textile products, jewelry, clothing accessories and footwear , with an increase of 8.8 percent.

Low demand for goods and services led to mixed results for wholesale and retail businesses, compounded by factors such as uncertainty surrounding the current economic situation, driven by the United States’ tariff policy.

Also, inflation in Mexico has begun to ease, after having had a period of upward trend in the first months of 2025. Last June, the National Consumer Price Index (INPC)  stood at  4.32% annually .

Low demand for goods and services led to a decline in Mexico’s commercial sector during April 2025, according to the Monthly Survey of Commercial Companies (EMEC) , which revealed a monthly decline in wholesale and retail trade.

According to the report, prepared by the  National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , revenue from the supply of goods and services in wholesale trade fell 0.9%  monthly. Employment in this sector increased by 0.5%, while average real wages fell 1.3% in the fourth month of the year.

Retail trade revenue fell 1%, while total employed personnel decreased 0.3%. Average real wages increased 1.3% monthly.

On an annual basis, wholesalers saw a 1.5% decline in total revenue, a 3.5% increase in workforce, and a 3% increase in average real wages.

Meanwhile, retail businesses reported a 0.4% increase in revenue from the supply of goods and services; the number of employees increased by 0.5%, and average real wages grew by 7.2% year-on-year in April 2025.

Meanwhile, the wholesale activity sectors and subsectors showed a decrease in supply revenue compared to April 2024.

Textiles and footwear showed the greatest decline, at 12.3%; this was followed by machinery, equipment, and furniture for agricultural, industrial, service, and commercial activities, and other general-use machinery and equipment , with a decrease of 11.7%, as well as trucks and new parts and spare parts for automobiles, vans, and trucks , with a drop of 10.2%.

In turn, the sectors and subsectors with the highest revenue in retail trade were household goods, computers, and interior items , with 6%; textiles, jewelry, clothing accessories, and footwear , with 4.9%, exclusively through the internet; and printed catalogs, television, and similar products , with 25.2%.

These figures come at a time when the  National Consumer Price Index (NCPI)  stood at  4.42%  in May 2025 compared to its annual comparison, due to an increase in the cost of some basic food products, such as tomatoes and chicken.

With this result in the fifth month of the year,  the INPC had an increase for the fourth consecutive month , which was the highest record since November 2024, when it reached 4.55 percent.

In this context, and in the face of an economic slowdown, the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) , in its Quarterly Report, lowered its growth forecast for the country from  0.6% to 0.1%  for 2025.

Among its estimates, the central bank reiterated that its 3% inflation target   could be reached by the  third quarter of 2026 , reflecting the current complex economic environment, which is likely to extend into next year.

On an annual basis, wholesalers saw a 4.8% slowdown in total revenue, a 4% increase in employed personnel, and a 4.5% increase in average real wages.

Meanwhile, retail businesses reported a 2.7% increase in revenue from the supply of goods and services; the number of employees increased by 1.5%, and average real wages grew by 3.3% annually in the third month of the year.

The wholesale activity sectors and subsectors showed a decrease in supply revenue compared to March 2024.

In this regard, textiles and footwear products showed a 14.3% decrease, trucks, parts, and refractories a 4.3% decrease, and agricultural and forestry raw materials a 2.4% decrease.

In turn, the sectors and subsectors with the highest revenue in retail trade were household goods, computers, and interior items (13.9%), stationery and personal items (10.4%), motor vehicles, fuel refractories (6.6%), and healthcare items (5.9%).

These figures come at a time when the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI)  stood at  4.22% at an annual rate in the first half of May 2025, due to an increase in the cost of some basic products.

Given this, the financial institution Ve por más estimated that year-on-year growth in the CPI could close the year slightly below current levels, and noted that upside risks and significant uncertainty remain, particularly due to external factors such as tariffs imposed by the United States.
