During October 2024, the total employed personnel in the manufacturing sector decreased by 0.1% at a monthly rate, thus adding three consecutive months of decline , according to the results of the Monthly Survey of the Manufacturing Industry (EMIM) , published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) , which indicated that the manufacture of textile inputs and textile finishing were the industries with the largest decline.

The survey revealed that in that month, hours worked showed a decrease of 0.5% , while average real remunerations paid (wages, salaries and social benefits) increased by 0.8% compared to the previous month, seasonally adjusted figures.

In the tenth month of the year, by type of contract, the staff dependent on the company name fell by 0.1% , while the non-dependent staff remained stable.

During the period mentioned, the hours worked by employees of the company decreased by 0.5% and those of non-employee employees decreased by 1.8% .

According to Inegi, in the reference month, the average real wages paid in the manufacturing sector dependent on the corporate name increased by 0.9% , while those corresponding to non-dependent personnel increased by 0.4 percent .

Regarding the variation in the indicators of the manufacturing sector and by subsector, the manufacturing of textile inputs and textile finishing were the industries that had the largest drop in employed personnel with 8.5% . There was also a decline in hours worked with 8.0% and an increase in average wages with 3.9% at an annual rate. Regarding the utilized plant capacity, these industries reached 70.5% , which represented a decrease compared to 2023, when it was 73.8 percent.

Meanwhile, the sectors that showed positive numbers were beverages and tobacco with 4.5% in employed personnel, 5.6% in hours worked and 2.6% in average wages . Their plant capacity utilization in October 2024 was 84.6%, which meant an increase over 2023, when it was 84.2 percent.

According to the EMIM results, October is the third consecutive monthly drop in personnel employment in the manufacturing industry, which gives an overview of what could come next year in this indicator, which has to do with the labor issue, and which will be one of the points to discuss in the next review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) in 2026.

The EMIM reveals the behavior of the main variables associated with employment in the manufacturing sector, and collects quantitative information on days worked, employed personnel dependent on the company name, employed personnel not dependent on the company name, hours worked, wages, plant capacity used, among other indicators, according to Inegi.
