A trade mission, comprised of 240 Mexican companies from various sectors , will seek to expand its export, investment and collaboration opportunities in Canada.

The mission, headed by Marcelo Ebrard, head of the Ministry of Economy , will begin this Thursday, May 7, in Toronto and Montreal, where more than 1,800 business meetings are planned with around 200 Canadian companies .

“This is an unprecedented working visit aimed at expanding our flow of investment and trade with Canada,” Ebrard explained.

The meeting will include representatives from companies —mostly small and medium-sized— from different sectors, including agribusiness, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, electromobility , creative industries, education and patent acceleration, as well as investment funds and innovation clusters.

As part of the agenda, Ebrard will have a working lunch with executives from companies such as Air Canada, Bombardier, ATCO, Brookfield, CN Rail, TC Energy, among others.

He will also lead a meeting of various Mexican companies with investment funds, including the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan —one of the largest in the world— and financial institutions in this country, in search of financing and collaboration opportunities .

“We already have trade with Canada and a significant flow of investment. With this mission, we want to accelerate our presence on the scene and, above all, open up the market for many Mexican companies, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises,” explained the Secretary of Economy.

Alongside the mission’s work, Marcelo Ebrard will hold working meetings with Canada’s Minister of Trade, Dominic LeBlan

The talks will seek to advance the process of the next review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) .

According to the most recent data from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) , Mexico’s exports to Canada reached  22 billion 169 million dollars (mdd) in 2025 , which meant an increase of 17% compared to 2024.

Meanwhile, Mexican imports from Canada totaled $12.555 billion last year, a 3.6% drop compared to 2024.

The push for this initiative comes on the eve of the review of the USMCA, scheduled for next July, with the aim of consolidating a more integrated North American economic bloc.

El cargo Mexican companies seek to “conquer” the Canadian market apareció primero en T21.

Mexico has started construction in Topolobampo, Sinaloa, on the world’s largest ultra-low carbon methanol plant , with an investment exceeding 3.3 billion dollars (USD) , with which the country seeks to position itself as a global benchmark in the production of low-emission methanol, and as a strategic player in the new low-carbon chemical industry.

The Pacífico Mexinol project , by the Transition Industries group , represents one of the most significant industrial investments in the country’s recent history, the Ministry of Economy (SE) reported in a statement, indicating that the plant also has the participation of international institutional investors and multilateral organizations, reflecting Mexico’s importance in the development of new production platforms in North America .

The project has the support of the Mexican government, through the SE, in collaboration with the state and municipal governments, under a model oriented towards near-zero net emissions (Net Zero), with the use of carbon capture technologies, clean energy and green hydrogen .

With operations estimated to begin in early 2030, the plant will have a production capacity of 1.8 million tons of blue methanol and 350,000 tons of green methanol per year , which will strengthen Mexico’s industrial competitiveness and its integration into global value chains.

During construction, the project will generate around six thousand jobs, as well as more than 400 permanent jobs in operation, which will also benefit regional economic development, the training of specialized talent and the strengthening of local suppliers.

“Beyond the numbers, Pacífico Mexinol will generate employment, opportunities and economic benefits for the region,” emphasized Vidal Llerenas Morales, Undersecretary of Industry and Commerce of the SE, who also highlighted that it is an initiative aligned with the Mexico Plan , which promotes more balanced growth, and an industrial policy aimed at attracting sustainable investments and strengthening value chains.

The project also includes the use of treated wastewater and has more than 200 environmental mitigation measures, and includes community development programs, inclusion and strengthening of local capacities.

On April 23, a formal ceremony was held to celebrate the start of the pre-construction phase in Topolobampo, Sinaloa, attended by international investors and executives from global companies in the energy and industrial sectors, as well as federal, local, and diplomatic officials such as Ronald Johnson, the United States Ambassador to Mexico.

Methanol is a key input for multiple industrial chains, used in the production of everyday materials, fuels, and chemicals . In its low-emission form, it becomes a relevant component for moving towards cleaner industrial and energy processes.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the chemical industry was the most dynamic in attracting new investments in 2025, totaling $700 million. These industries contribute to the development of the country’s productive and export sectors’ competitiveness.

El cargo Mexico will produce “green” methanol; construction of plant begins in Sinaloa apareció primero en T21.

Marcelo Ebrard, head of the Ministry of Economy (SE) , announced that he held a conversation this Wednesday with Jamieson Greer, United States Trade Representative (USTR) , as part of the work being carried out in the lead-up to the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) , scheduled for next July.

In a message on his social media account, Ebrard shared that trade authorities from both countries began the first talks on the trilateral trade agreement , which has been in effect since 2020.

The delegation accompanying the Secretary of Economy includes Luis Rosendo Gutiérrez, Undersecretary of Foreign Trade of the SE, and other Mexican officials.

In the post, Marcelo Ebrard indicated that “the technical teams will be working today and tomorrow throughout the day”; however, he did not provide further details about the meeting with Greer and his team. He also did not elaborate on the topics under discussion or whether any specific agreement had been reached.

It is worth remembering that Jamieson Greer has expressed his support for the USMCA, despite the fact that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has repeatedly expressed his disagreement with the trade agreement, calling it “the worst in the history of the United States.”

Greer has indicated that the USMCA will not be automatically renewed, so  Mexico must resolve a list of pending issues that could define the future of this agreement .

Among the issues he raised were  improvements to labor legislation and the enforcement of environmental laws. He also discussed agricultural trade, seasonal Mexican products, labeling and rules of origin, and sanitary and phytosanitary measures, among others, including critical minerals.

Ebrard indicated in a previous publication that Mexico “will propose the continuation of the USMCA and the elimination of tariffs.”

On several occasions, Marcelo Ebrard has commented that Mexico will come out ahead in the review of the USMCA and has shown confidence in the team he leads for the negotiation.

On March 9, the Mexican government presented the results of the public consultations for the review of the USMCA, where 78.5% of participants emphasized that the trade agreement is “positive or very positive .” On average, the percentage of people who considered it positive was 84% ​​by sector and 75.9% by state.

The USMCA has a validity of 16 years, and article 34.7 indicates that a review must be carried out six years after it was implemented, where the three countries will evaluate its functioning to see if it continues for another 16 years.

El cargo Mexico and the US begin talks on reviewing the USMCA apareció primero en T21.

The Ministry of Economy (SE) reported that 750 companies with allegedly irregular activities and that are dedicated to the manufacture and marketing of steel products were identified, of which 350 were suspended in their imports and procedures were initiated to cancel the Manufacturing, Maquiladora and Export Services Industry Program (IMMEX) .

The SE detailed, through a statement, that the activities of the company Bremsa Regiomontana were suspended , which, together with the company Elegant Fashion, would have triangulated import operations for 76,761 tons of steel during 2025.

The federal agency indicated that these actions were carried out within the framework of Operation Clean-Up , and were the result of inspections with various institutions, such as the Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency, the Ministry of Economy, the Tax Administration Service (SAT) and the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM) , in addition to information provided by the National Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) .

Of the total number of companies inspected, 400 are under analysis and in compliance with information requirements in order to determine the start of the administrative procedure.

The SE carried out the inspection and verification of said companies dedicated to the manufacture and marketing of steel products, both in national territory and abroad, in order to determine the legality of their import-export operations , and to verify compliance with the rules of origin of foreign manufacturers that export steel products to Mexico.

The federal agency indicated that, in coordination with other federal government institutions, it seeks to ensure the security of supply chains and the ongoing fight against smuggling and the misuse of economic development programs.

In the lead-up to the review of the  United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) , the country’s mining and metallurgical industry is one of the issues on the negotiating table, especially regarding critical minerals—such as cobalt, copper, fluorite, among others—where Mexico and the United States have agreed to work on a joint plan.

As part of the actions to strengthen this industry, on February 12, the Mexican government announced that it had recovered  1,126  mining concessions , equivalent to 889,512 hectares, due to lack of payments or absence of exploration.
